Chassis / Suspension & Steering Other When driving Not applicable
Q: My 1996 Cadillac sedan DeVille is riding a bit rougher than it has been. A mechanic told me it could be the "compressor for the shocks". Is this a possibility and if so, where is the "compressor for the shocks"? I hate to sound like a woman (which I am) but I also hate to be at a mechanic's mercy when it comes time to pay. Thanks for any info you can give me.
A: the compressor is located under the hood on the right side near the front next to the wheel well.on some cadillacs it may be located underneath the car in the rear.up next to the gas tank.
Heating / Cooling System Malfunction When driving When warm
Q: I CAN NOT GET ANY HEAT OUT OF THE HEATER. I HAVE CHECKED THE WATER LINES AND THE T-VALVE. THE BEST I CAN TELL THE WATER IS NOT GOING THROUGH THE HEATER, CAN IT BE PLUGGED IN THE HEATER OR IS THERE A VALVE IN THE HEATER.
WALLY
A: hi, your heater valve is controlled by vacumm, check if you have vacumm to the valve on the engine first, if not, check if the vacumm hose is leaking.
Electrical / Lighting Systems Other Happens always Always
Q: There's a clicking noise under the dashboard on the passenger side.
Also, the dashlights, radio, ac and are all clicking on and off, even when car is off.
What could this be?
A: A power control relay is getting current from an extra scource..... Locate the relay and a wiring diagram.....
Then unplug the fuses one at a time until the clicking stops... You now know which circuit is incorrectly feeding power to the relay and have a good start towards 'why'..... Ed
Q: I have a 89 caddy, when I went over a speed but (slowly)it died. Its not out of gas, its got spark, fuel, and it turns over but won,t fire up. I checked the egnition modual and it was fine. My mechanic freind thinks it might be my crank sensor but we can not find it. please help!
A: Ryan,
I'm only guessing that you have hit a speed bump that jolted the car some. Most cars, and possibly the Caddy have an inertia switch or roll-over switch can be activated by a crash or even really rough railroad crossing or perhaps a speed bump. Generally, the switch will cut power to the electric fuel pump and shut everything down until reset. I know you said it had fuel and spark, but you may not have meant fuel to the engine.
If my hunch is true, and you can locate where the switch is located, there's a button you can press to reset it. In my 1989 Ford Escort, and many other Fords, it's located in the trunk area behind a side panel plug that must be removed. It happened one time to my son driving a Mercury Lynx when he crossed a rough railroad.
Q: Pulled car into garage after driving. Engine shut down before turning off ignition switch. Engine would not start again.
All electrical Ok. Lights, instrument, radio, ok. Engine cranks but won't start.
Checked diagnostic codes. E12 and E52.
A: E12 means there is no distributor signal. E52 means there was a PCM (power control module) memory reset. Your distributor may have some internal problems(rotor, mechanical advance springs may be screwy) you need to check for spark at your plugs and spark from the coil. You can open up the distributor and take a look inside. Those are the cheapest things to do first. A new rotor is usually only a couple of bucks.
Q: Smoke and burning smell coming from the steering column around the ignition switch.
A: A. Most probable cause is the turn signal switch. Even if the signals are working, it is common for the lube used on the sliding parts of the switch to get hot and smolder...... Particularly if waiting for long traffic lights to change while the signals flash the entire wait. Your cornering lights are also wired through the signal switch, again...long waits with the signals on can heat up the cornering lamp circuits that heats the lube to smoldering.
If the signals work, but the cornering lights don't, you need a turn signal switch to effect repair. If you get smoke by simply turning on the key and you have a tilt steering column, the turn signal switch wiring harness has worn away the insulation as it slides inside the column during tilt-to-preferred settings movement.
Drive Train / Driveline Malfunction When driving When warm
Q: The transmission on my 1987 cadillac Deville Touring Coupe starts to slip in third gear--only after it warms up.
The transmission operates perfectly when it's cold. No unususal noises or other abnormal symptoms.
I'm thinking since it's not so bad, right now, I would change the fluid to eliminate the possibility of mis-matched(wrong) type fluids, and, add one of those many additives in the auto parts store that claim to help slippage.
I have a feeling the real answers are going to be more complicated and expensive however.
Most Sincerely,
Bob
A: First I would check the fluid level, second change filter and fluid if it has not been done for some time, third - may need band adjusted.
Heating / Cooling System Malfunction When driving When warm
Q: The cooling fan dash light comes on and the fans don't kick in when the A/C is on. Not a constant problem but happens when doing town driving.
A: I have a 1985 Sedan de Ville (original owner) and this happened to me several years ago. It is almost certainly the fan control module. This is found right behind the left headlights. It is an expensive part and a "B" to replace. I did it myself.
Oddly, my car has just started doing the opposite--the fans run all the time. The consensus seems to be that it is the fan module gone bad again.
All Part Groups Vibration Happens sometimes Not applicable
Q: it shakes sometimes when you are coming to a stop. it also stalls when you come to a stop. there is a tapping every once in a while. we have used carb. cleaner on the carb. and it seems to run a little better. there is a part right under where the carb. comes off we think that is the problem, but do not know what the part is. can you help?
A: It's not the carb. It is a bad fuel pump. Which should be located in th efuel tank. The vibration i scaused when the car tries to stall!
Electrical / Lighting Systems Other Not applicable Not applicable
Q: With the ignition key in the off position, the no charge light stays on and the A/C blower motor runs. Sometimes the blower motor willjust come on and off as if it has a mind of it's own. All this is taken place with the key in the off position.
A: Check the ignition switch. It may be out of adjustment or worn out.
