Heating / Cooling System Malfunction When starting When cold
Q: My 2000 Cavalier works fine until it gets cold outside.
At about -10 Celsius the car starts fine, the heater fan works fine, but there is no warm air.
The Engine Coolant Temperature gauge climbs up to 125 and I am forced to shut the car off.
Once the outside temperature has warmed up the heater works fine.
A: I would check the coolant level and the thermostat for opening. Ed
Q: When I first try to start after engine has sat, it will not turn over. It's not getting gas. I spray ether into the carb then it starts until ether runs out.
If you try after a few attempts with the gas pedal all the way down, it will then have more of a tendency to start.
Then it runs fine.
A: Sounds like the cold start enrichment system needs attention. Ed
A: Have someone hold the door handle up , give it a good hard kick . Other than that , disassemble the door from the inside to locate and fix the problem . Sounds like the lock mechanism decided to cease to work as it should .
Q: Sqealing sound when in motion from rear brakes, sound stops when brakes are applied.
A: Hi Mike.
Are there any other symptoms? Like a soft pedal....grabbing brakes...or pulsating when applied?
I don't know how long you had these shoes in the vehicle, but there are two possiblilties. Both of which requires you to look at the shoes themselves.
Some aftermarket brake manufacturers put some device...resin or some design to make the brakes squeal when they are getting close to needing replacement. If your shoes are bonded (glued) you might be ok in as much as the drum might not be damaged. If your shoes are riveted, the brass rivets contact the metal of the drum as the lining wears away and cuts a groove in it deeper and deeper.
The least it could be is what is referred to as glazing. Some drivers have a habit of riding with their foot on the brake pedal and the constant contact heats the brake surface and burnishes the material. That can be removed with medium grade sandpaper on the shoes and also on the drum. Be sure to wear proper breathing filters to protect you against the brake dust. Asbestos is not used any more, but the other material is metal oxides and organic compounds that can make your health just as miserable. Safety is always the way to go. Wish you luck.
Q: FLUID COMES OUT TOP MASTER CYLINDER I HAVE CHANGED IT SAME THING BUT BRAKES WORK FINE
A: try to replace your master cylinder. this might help. also, make sure you bleed your lines correctly. start bleeding the brakes at the line farthest away from the master cylinder, and work your way up to the shortest. this just may do the trick
Chassis / Suspension & Steering Other When driving Always
Q: Posi Trac Rear end feels like it's shifting from side to side.
A: Binding up. Needs to have the fluid drained and then refill with 10w30 engine oil. Run the truck on jack stands in gear for an hour or so and then drain completly and refill with gear lube and add the GM posi fluid conditioner to it. Good luck. Ed
