Q: Won't start when cold. I can put gas in the carburetor and it will start.
A: Carburetor???..Fuel Injection throttle body????.....if fuel injection...most likely cause is a bad temperature sending unit..the computer thinks the engine is completly warmed up so does not supply extra fuel for cold start.......Ed

Q: When I get up to 20 miles per hour, the tramnsmission slips, unless you hit the gas hard it won't shift.
It happens in overdrive and in low 3. In low 2 it is fine. It does it again at 30 to 35 and again when engine wants to shift.
I have drained the pan and changed the filter but it still does the same thing. There were metal shavings in the pan when I emptied it.
Any ideas as to what the problem is. It just satrted two days ago.
A: I would first check the controls that tell the transmission to shift..... vacuum / throttle position switch / kick down cable, etc.....
Then, and only then, look internally... Ed

Q: Pings when driven. Higher octane fuel does not help. Timing is OK .
How do I test the knock sensor ?
A: Hmmmmmmm...... timing is okay with the plug at the black wire with the pink or white stripe disconnected????.....
If you have not done this to check then you are probably 18 to 20 degrees advanced... Ed
A: If you are after a replacement, you need only check through the Auto Recyclers section...
An aftermarket one would need to be checked very closely for size to fit..... Ed
Q: Recently I have this problem of not being able to shift gears on my manual 5 speed trans. In fact, it seems as if the gears are engaged.
Would the problem happen to be slave master cylinder? Or is there more to the problem I don't know about?
A: If the slave cylinder is leaking, the transmission will be difficult to shift.. Ed

Q: I have oil leaking from the U joint. Are there outer and inner seals? If there are outer and inner seals, is the outer seal the rear extension seal? Is the shaft hollow?
There is no oil leaking from outside of the shaft comming out of the transmission. It is leaking at the U joint.
A: The only thing I can think of here is grease from the u-joint.... not oil as there is no scource for that.... if it is oil, follow the path upward and forward to the source.... Ed
Q: The truck runs good just idling but when you give it gas it starts to miss and boggs down, when you give it full throttle it blows black smoke out of the exhust, and miss's and has no power it also blew the muffler apart.

A: Either one or both of the rear brake lights have a ground problem, causing a large voltage requirement when activated.
Or the alternator is lazy at idle.... not putting enough of a charge out..... Ed
