Q: The Mass Air Flow component is bad, what exactly does it do? Would it hurt to take it off? It looks like a non essential part. Could you please help.
A: The Mass Air Flow is required for the computer to moniter how much air your engine is breathing and the density and temp.
If removed your computer will go into limp home
mode. Back-up spark is active.
Drive Train / Driveline Malfunction When driving Always
Q: Under hard acceleration, during shifting, the clutch sometimes slips.
The clutch and pressure plate have been replaced with high performance parts.
What other clutch system part(s) could cause slippage when shifting?
A: Sounds a lot like they left the high performance part of the clutch unit on the writing part of the box... A clutch should not slip...
Make sure the linkage is adjusted properly, and free to release cleanly. If that is the case, you need a new one.... Ed
All Part Groups Malfunction When accelerating When warm
Q: My car seems to miss every now and then... usaully only when it's running warm. It seems to miss when you put it in sixth gear at low rpm's and you accelerate.
I've changed the plugs and wires which seemed to help a good bit, but I still notice it from time to time.... thanks.
A: A small misfire from low grade fuel under low RPM conditions is not unusual......
Also check the cap and rotor... the rotor burns through the centre, and will short to ground at times....
If none of these..... use a squirt bottle filled with water to spray all along the wires....
Thoroughly dampen the wires, and see if the miss shows up...... Ed
Chassis / Suspension & Steering Malfunction When turning Always
Q: When I make a turn or when I am at a complete stop and I rotate the wheel, I get a vibration that comes through the steering wheel.
Its something that has just started occurring. Could it be my powersteering unit?? please help
A: It also could be the belt tension not tight enough so that the pump is slipping..... or the fluid is low.... or the car is idling a little slowly also.... Ed
Electrical / Lighting Systems Malfunction When driving Not applicable
Q: Fuse # 5, ECM ignition fuse on fuse panel has blown out several times and prevents car from starting, one time car died on freeway due to fuse blowing out. Removed after market alarm, no help. Unable to get good electrical system diagnosis.
A: Your ignition system is drawing too much current and causing it to blow. This could stem from a short in the components of the ignition system.
The only good way to tell is to have a dealer check it. They would be more qualified to deal with something of that nature....
Ignition System Malfunction When accelerating Always
Q: Replaced the opti spark distributor,
(Remanufactured) cap, rotor and wires. the car pings heavily over 4000 rpm at all times. Is the rebuilt opti spark faulty? To much ignition timing? the ECM controls everthing and I can not change the timing.
Chassis / Suspension & Steering Other When turning When warm
Q: Power steering oil becomes so hot it overflows. This problem did not show itself until after the o-ring between the pump and reservoir was replaced and the upper seal and bearing in the steering box were replaced.
A: The adjustment on the steering box slack adjustment screw may be too tight. You didn't say if you changed the parts yourself or someone else did. if a mechanic did then have him/her try to readjust the screw. If they don't know what you're talking about then find another mechanic!

Q: I recently bought a camero and have been doing repair on it . my buddies and I replaced the starter and I can not get the car to start. when you turn the key its complete silence. We were told when we bought it we only had to change the fuel pump, Altenator and starter. The battery is fully charged but I get nothing when I turn the key.
A: Check for spark at the ignition coil (center of the distributor cap).
