Drive Train / Driveline Malfunction When accelerating Not applicable

Q:  Our 1996 corsica is having shifting problems.
At first these were small, after starting the engine you would have to wait until the transmission fluid pumped itself around.

I checked the fluid and it was low, so I did add some to it. However, there has been no leaks or puddles around.

Now when you shift into drive, the transmission acts as if it is out of fluid, but the fluid level is fine. What's your diagnosis?

A:  My guess is that the seal in the forward clutch pack drum is causing problems...... Either way, the problem will require rebuilding or replacing with a used unit.... None of the options are inexpensive or easy...... Good news is the car is only 4 yrs old and should still be worth spending the money on to repair....Ed

Engine Malfunction When driving Always

Q:  Very intermittant problem, engine acts as though the fuel supply is cut off, but it will resume running fine after a couple seconds.

It will do this repeatedly for a mile or so then run fine for the remainder of the trip. It seems to happen sooner when the outside air temp is warm.

Usually does not die and will idle fine but, sometimes when it is hot outside it will stall several times while trying to accelerate before getting under way.

I have found that tapping on the MAP sensor seems to make it run better for a while. I have replaced the fuel filter.

Is the MAP sender a mechanical device that could be getting stuck or is it purely electronic?

Thanks

A:  It is electronic in nature, and signals the computer as to the vacuum of the engine.... not expensive usually and easy to change...... Ed

Drive Train / Driveline Malfunction When driving When warm

Q:  The vehicle will die when trying to down shift out of overdrive usually when coming to a stop. Does not happen usually untill warmed up. It drives fine in first or second as long as you dont let it go into overdrive. I've been told I have a bad transmission control switch (solinoid). I was going to replace the switch but can't locate it on the engine or drive train. It is not listed in any diagrams I've found either. I don't want to take things apart that don't need to come apart. Where is this switch located?

A:  On the drivers side of the transaxle is where the actualy solinoid is. In order to relace the solinoid you have to remove side of the transaxle in order to get at it. Since it is a pain to remove, try on locate the connector that plugs in to the front side of the pan that you must remove, sometimes that connector gets corroded and you might just need to clean it up.

Q:  When I bought my little Chevy Corsica the dash lights weren't working but everything else was. I changed the fuse and it blew it out. How can I fix this so I will have dash lights when driving at night?

Fuel System Malfunction When driving When warm

Q:  I have a 93 Chevy Corsica with 135 000 KM (I live in Canada)

First, my car does not run even at idle speed when it's warm. Better when it's cold but but just a bit. Tried injector cleaner, bit better.

Is it the injectors need a good cleaning or replacing?

Second, my radiator fan does not run. I tested the car at idle and the temparature gage almost goes in the red.

I just found your site, it's the best out there. Maybe you could help me out. Thanks.

A:  it sounds like you might have a bad fuel pump. have expert look in on this matter. check your thermostat it might be bad. also check your fuses and wires ther might be a loose wire to youre fan. if youre car is fan belt driven your waterpump might be bad.

Chassis / Suspension & Steering Malfunction When driving When warm

Q:  When steering wheel is turned to the extreme right there is a rubbing sound and a vibration can be felt through the steering column. The power steering pump is not whining and this only happens when backing out or when the steering column is put in a bind. It has never happened when just turning onto a road, etc.

A:  That is normal. The pump produces about 1200 psi pressure. The rubbing is the tire against the body or frame. Ed

Electrical / Lighting Systems Malfunction Happens always Not applicable

Q:  Headlights cut out while driving (in the dark!) Checked fuses, bulbs etc, no problem seen. Hi beam indicator on dash board is also not working. All other lights are ok. The manual talks about a 'circuit-breaker' in the light switch, does that mean in the steering column?

A:  I had the same problem with my 93 beretta. If I had my low beams on to long there would be a click from the light switch and off went the lights. This was because I had wired fog lights into the low beams. If you have not done this than search for a short. If not your last choice is to replace the switch.

All Part Groups Other Happens always Always

Q:  It over heats with the overflow, and it bubbles and that, so I think it is over heating... So what do I do?

A:  If your saying that fluid is coming out of the reservoir tank and you see bubbles in the tank while the engine is running then you have a blown head gasket on the engine. The bubbles are from the cylinder(s) during compression stroke pushing air into the cooling system pressurizing the cooling system beyond it's design which pushes out cooloant from the overflow/reservoir tank. You need to have the head gasket replaced. Costly.

Engine Chugging When braking When warm

Q:  Sometimes when braking hard engine stalls. Starts right up, runs fine. Put car in drive, eng. stalls.

Have to start eng. push accel. Sometimes goes fine, other times stalls.

Have adj. brake switch that works tork conv.,
changed egr.

Also tork conv. is locking and unlocking while driving when I press and release brake pedal at 50-60 mph.

Fluid is fine. This is an intermit. problem that doesn't happen every time car is driven. 2.8 v6 eng. Can hear rattle or knock sound in area of tork. conv.

A:  Try unplugging the torque convertor lock-up... It's usually a 4 wire plug on top of (or maybe on the side of) the trans unit, and drive for a few days... If problem is gone, at least you know what the problem is..... If not, re and re, and clean the idle air control motor....... Ed

Ignition System Won't Start When stopped When warm

Q:  Drove with scan tool connected. The coolant
temperature reached 230F and fan did not kick on. Fan kicks on shortly after A/C is turned on.

After driving under heavy load and scan tool connected, coolant temp reached 230F and MAT reached 140F cooling. Fan did not come on. Engine stalled and barely started.

Computer sent trouble code MAT sensor out of range. Then computer reported no trouble codes in all diagnostic modes and no data.

Question: Computer, ignition module or both?

A:  If the cooling system including the radiator is not plugged or restricted, I would be finding out why the fan is not coming on in regular(non ac) mode..... If the ignition module gets to hot, it will break down.. As well as the computer will try and compensate for overheating if it thinks that is what is going on... Ed

Engine Won't Start Happens always When warm

Q:  This car stops dead when driving 1-2 miles and will not start like there is no gas to the engine, the fault code is 45.

A:  Code 45 is for the Oxygen sensor or circuit (rich exhaust gases). A high voltage in the circuit sets code 45. This code can also be caused by fuel system problems. I dont have the space here to go into the possible fuel system problems.

Heating / Cooling System Malfunction When driving Always

Q:  My Corsica's heat control will not work. I turn on the heat and the fan does not go on. I can feel heat, but there is no blowing of the heat.

We replaced all the fuses, and that didn't work.
Where may the fan be located and what can I do to fix it? I can't defrost my windows, and for the rain and cold weather it is very dangerous.

I would rather not send to a mechanic and pay a bunch of money for labor.

Thank you,
Heather

A:  Under the hood on the passenger side. Usually round and recessed into the heater box. Wire leads and connects to it. Ed

Engine Malfunction When driving When warm

Q:  Hello,
My car stalls when it gets warm, I changed the spark plugs, and the spark plug wires.. While changeing the spark plugs I noticed that I am not geting any electricity out of Plug number 4...After I did the change I took the car for a drive, it did not stall but I felt the engine stumbling when I step on the gas... What do you think is affecting plug number 4, for it not to be sparkling? What do I do to correct this problem please.

A:  I had the same problem with my Corsica. I had to replace the ignition coils. The 1988 Corsica has 2 coils. Each one controls two spark plugs. I went ahead and replaced both of them and it fixed the problem.
