All Part Groups Malfunction When starting Always

Q:  when i press the floor starter i hear a grinding sound. i replaced the flywheel earlier and apparently selected the wrong one. the ring gear teeth were chewed up so i had the ring gear turned over and the problem still exists. when i attempted to purchase a new ring gear the one available at napa was a larger diameter.
i forgot to check the mesh between the flywheel and the starter. what can i do next?

A:  A. If you've corrected the gear mesh question....a gear grind on engagement could be caused by an incorrect number of shims between the starter and the bellhousing. Also consider looking for a cracked starter cast nose piece or worn-out armature shaft bearings or too short a stroke from solenoid linkage plunger. RE
