Electrical / Lighting Systems Won't Start Happens always Always
Q: The windshield wiper will not move at all.. Does that sound like the motor, or should I check something else? ...the fuse is good!
A: If you have a test light, you can check for power to the motor...
If no power to the motor, check for power to the switch...
If power to the switch, but not out of the switch, likely the switch needs replacement, etc....
Break the electrical problems down in sections.... Ed
Q: Oil blow by is plugging the air filter. The exhaust is blue. Plugs are oil fouled. ???
A: Probably, the car has high mileage on it. With possible worn piston rings. In particular, the oil control rings would be worn. You are ready for a new engine (if the body is still in good shape). Ed
Q: Engine taps. Sounds like lifters. WQorse when first started, gets a little better 2-3 minutes after startng. What is the valve lash setting? I suspect that this might be the problem? The car has a 1.8 liter?(I think) 4 cylinder.
A: depends whether it comes with rocker arm bolts or nuts...
Q: I wonder why my car 'deisels', and how I can stop it from doing so. Thank you.
A: A lot of people still give the engine a quick rev before shutting it off.....
Also the carb... many automatic transmission cars have a kicker solonoid on the side for the linkage...
If this is sticking plunger or set incorrectly, it is a problem..... Ed
Electrical / Lighting Systems Malfunction Happens always Not applicable
Q: All blinkers function properly with headlights and running lights off. When I turn on headlights/and or parking lights the left dash signal comes on and left turn signal does not work. if i have the left blinker on without the headlights, it works until i turn the headlights on. i have replaced the headlight switch and nothing changed. searched for hacked up wires or loose grounds and found none. interior lights function properly with and w/o lights on. any help would be great, thank you
A: Check and change your turnsignal bulbs on left side.
If there is a wire broke and laying down from the marker light( driving light) then it very well could cause what you are telling us.
Q: I was hoping I could get some guidance on adjusting the Holley Carb (1850 4 barrel) on my 1974 Nova.
I have a problem where the engine will rumble and shake when the accelerator peddle is depressed more than half way.
Doesn't matter which speed. I have been attepting to fix by the "hit and miss" method and probably have all the adjustments off on it now including the floats, accelrator pump lever, choke and idle system.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to where this type of problem may be originating from on the carb?
Exhaust System Other Not applicable Not applicable
Q: Regarding the pipe that is attached to the manifolds in a single exhaust system... does it come in one piece, or is it 2 pieces that must be welded? The engine is a v8.
A: It is generally a 1 piece pipe that is called a Y-Pipe......... Ed
Drive Train / Driveline Other When driving When warm
Q: I have two questions. 1st my car has a thm 350. on the right side of the case just above the pan, where the detent cable enters the trans. there is what appears to be a pressure switch of some kind and has developed a leak. my problem is, i can't find any information about this part in any of my books, parts "pros" at the local parts houses all shrug their shoulders and say good luck. is this piece nessecary, what is it called, and do you have a part number for it? it doesn't make a difference if it is plugged in or not. i have already determined it is not the back up light switch, as that is a combo switch mounted on the column. and 2nd, will a rear end from a 77-79 cad seville fit my car with out a lot of modification?
A: The switch does not ring any bells, and the Cadillac unit is not very strong.....
If it is rear discs you are after, there are
modification kits available in the market.... Ed
Fuel System Won't Start When starting Not applicable
Q: Gas pours out of the metering jet ports and out of the top of the carburetor.
A: The old Q-Jet problem....... float has sunk and the carb is flooding........ if it is one of those plastic ones, make it a 100 mile per hour float by throwing it as hard as possible against a wall..
If it's the metal one, then it will have a pin hole in it and also needs replacement..... Ed
Q: When I go to start the car, the starter gear sticks to the
flywheel. I just put a new 327 engine in the car, identical
to the one I took out.
I've tried to fix it using a shimmy kit, which adjusts the
gap between the starter and the engine. But nothing seems
to work. The starter is one of those two bolt starters.
Someone said I may need a bracket on the back, although I
don't think it had one before.
I would grateful for any advice. Thank you.
A: Is the ring gear the original, or one that came with the new engine???....
Is the starter drive spring healthy?? This is what pulls the drive back out of the ring gear.
As well, the rpm of the engine???....
