Engine Upgrade Happens always Always

Q:  I have a 1995 chev 4x4 305cu that I need more low end toque for pulling a trailer. Would you suggest a chip or what else?

A:  A chip is a good start... Depending on cash available, a low restriction exhaust helps a lot also.... Careful here as there is a difference between low restriction and loud.... loud gets annoying quickly..... Ed

Engine Upgrade Happens always Always

Q:  I am interested in information on conversion of a 1990 3/4 ton Chevy Pick-Up with 4 WD, 4 speed manual, 350 engine, and throttle body injection to a 330 HP Vortec engine.

A:  Yes, I'll bet you are...... and I would personally love to have one of these in my drive also.... You'd need to be very skilled in the electrical and electronics (automotive) field to do this conversion.... You'll need two complete wiring diagrams for measuring from whatcha got to whatcha want... As well as a mostly complete Vortec vehicle for the parts....... Ed

Fuel System Malfunction When stopped Always

Q:  vehicle won't idle properly - when I disconnect the timing setup wire (beige ith black strip) it idles at 5-600 rpm fine when reconnected it starts at 2000 idles down to 1000 but when you put it in gear does not have enough power to keep running and stalls -0 also the tach is showing 900 then jumps every so often to maybe 1500 and you can hear it surge

A:  Engine timing is not right . That wire you mentioned removes the ability of the computer to correct for spark advance . Your problem is a timing issue . If the engine has " jumped timing " which can happen with chain or belt systems , then you will have the problem you now face . Get a good book on timing , load up on good feelings , and prepare for some real work . If this is a belt driven timing system , it may help to position the gears , like the camshaft gear , very slightly away from the correct point . This is because when you tighten the belt idler pulley , the gear will be pulled into the correct position . Very few books will tell you this . I learned the hard way .

Drive Train / Driveline Malfunction Not applicable Not applicable

Q:  I changed transmission, and now my speedometer is off, and I can't find the correct part.

Please let me know if you can tell me what is the ratio or # of teeth on the first drive gear inside the tail shaft on a overdrive transmission for a 1986 Chevy Pick-up with a outside gear being 40 tooth for speedometer.

It's a 3/4 ton C-20 5.0 liter, 3.42 rear axle; the tire size is 7.50R16.

Thank you,

Robert

A:  Robert... you need to take this info to your local GM dealer and they can match the one you need....... Ed

Drive Train / Driveline Upgrade Not applicable Not applicable

Q:  Hi, I'm Troy from Georgia. I have a 1950 Chev 3/4 ton pick up with 'suicide wheels.' Do you know if wheels from another Chev would fit?? Thank you.

A:  Suicide wheels???.... Does that mean they look so bad that when ya look at them you just want to commit........?? Well okay..... Measure the centre of the bolt hole to the centre of any 'across from it' bolt hole...... Then it is 5 bolt or 6 bolt or what ever you are looking for that is 4 1/2 or 5 1/4 or... etc..... That should help you at the wrecking yard with a tape measure.... Ed
