Heating / Cooling System Malfunction Happens always Not applicable
Q: I have a 1996 Chrysler LHS that has been having some A/C problems. The ATC system started acting strange and eventually the A/C stopped working. It also seemed to make a fairly loud hissing noise from behind the control panel.
I ran the diagnostic on the ATC (temp to 75, press Floor Mix and Defrost until display blinks) and the thing cycled through a bunch of modes and came up with an error code 36. This means (according to the book that I have) "ATC head communication failure".
Question: what exactly does this mean and what can I do about it?
Thanks in advance.
David
A: Before spending a ton of money on a new ATC head (Automatic Temperature Control computer), try removing the trim piece right above the glovebox, it snaps into place, and looking at the inside temp. fan. Its a little fan that draws in compartment air to get a temperature reading. A lot of times, this fan gets thick with dust/dirt and causes an ATC malfunction. To clean it, remove it from the dash and wipe clean....try that first. If you still have a communications problem, the ATC has an internal problem & be prepared, they ain't cheap.
