Fuel System Won't Start Not applicable Not applicable

Q:  I was driving and the truck just died. I think I've narrowed it down to the fuel.

There was no power to the fuel pump in the tank so I thought it might have been the fuel relay, which I then changed, and also made sure the fuel button under the dash was ok.

Checking for power in the wires on the relay, I touched one of them and I guess it grounded. I heard the fuel pump on the chassis rail start running, so I tried to start it. No luck. Also changed the fuel filter, and still no good.

I'm confused why when I was touching the wires with the test light it started working.

Someone said it might be the ignition, but who knows. Please HELP!!

A:  Wires by the fuel pump relay probably have IGS corosion. Check all these wires carefully.

Drive Train / Driveline Vibration When accelerating Always

Q:  It feels like entire driveshaft is shaking when usually driving on freeway. This normally happens when I'm accelerating between 60-70 miles per hour. Sometimes it happens at other speeds, but usually 60-70.

Also it seems to shift really "hard', almost like it sticks and then shifts gears. (94 Ford Bronco 5.8L Automatic transmission)

When the vibration occurs it looks like the RPM's are to low for the gear it's in. Kinda like starting a manual out in 2nd instead of 1st.

A:  It does sound like the driveshaft threw a weight off and is out of balance.

Engine Chugging When stopped Not applicable

Q:  My Bronco with a 351W, with EFI runs fine most of the time. Every once in a while it acts like it's going to die and sometimes does.

This is after it has warmed up. It starts chugging. Idle drops from 1000 rpms to 600 then staggers down and then back to 600 rpms.

I have to give it gas to keep it idling. After a minute or so it smooths out and runs fine.
Then the whole thing starts over a few minutes later, sometimes it does not do it again until I turn it off and come back hours later to drive it again. It acts the same way in the morning, when it's cold.

A:  Remove and clean the idle air control motor and chanel... disconnect the negative battery cable for 1 minute and enjoy driving again.... Ed

A:  this could happen if the speedometer gear in the transmission is bad you shoul have an expert look at it. before you do that if youre vehicle has cruise control. you should check your cruise control box to see if it's bad that is something that you can check yourself.

Windows / Glass Malfunction Happens always Always

Q:  My rear power window is having massive problems.

When I bought the Bronco about a month and a half ago the window pretty much worked fine, but it's progressively gotten worse.

Now it won't go down or up unless I physically help it with my hands. All the time the motor is churning away like it's really doing it's job. Q:  The truck went dead. No power no lights. Checked the battery, was fine. Not the solenoid. Changed battery cables. I don't have a clue!!

A:  Joann,

It sounds like some major electrical "short" occured and the master fuse link (on the positive battery cable) simply "blew". If you have a voltmeter you can check between the + battery terminal and the solenoid for voltage, it should read around 12 volts.

Oh, as I was writing this, I remembered a Ford Maverick I used to have that did the same thing! Turns out the negative battery cable was loose where it attached to the engine. Might be worth a look.

Q:  Yesterday, I noticed a loss of power and some hesitation on hills. When I opened the hood, there was oil everywhere. The air filter was soked and the housing had standing oil in it.

I assume the oil was causing the power loss, but why is it comming out the breather pipe and PCV valve?

I have the 4.9 inline 6 and have removed the smog pump and most of the emissions items as they are not required here.

The catalytic converters are still in place, but the small pipe that ran to the smog pump is just open.

What is causing my trouble and what should I do to fix it?

A:  Sounds like your loss of power could be because you are losing compression through the valve train, this could be causing oil to go out over the engines topside. Get a compression test done.

All Part Groups Malfunction Happens sometimes When warm

Q:  My '84 Bronco has a first gear granny. So, therefore I start of in actual 2nd gear. I release my clutch to get going, give it some gas, like I always do, but now it acts like its going to stall.

The Bronco throws forward as if I poped out the clutch. Then I will push the clutch all the way back in and then it will start idling. Now, it has been missing intermittently, and is getting worse.

Going down the road in 4th gear it sometimes studders along, as if it was on a bumpy road.

I have changed the thermostat thinking of overheating maybe.

Then Spark Plugs... it still acted like Spark Plug Wires... still acted up, and has gotten worse...

Now, what? Is it my Timing? My Automatic choke is not sticking from what I see. What is the correct timming for an 84' Bronco.

Out of the factory I beileve that it is at ZERO. But where I live I am in high Elevation, and was wondering if that had anything to do with it. Please let me know.

Thanks,

Engine Malfunction When starting Always

Q:  Our 1981 Ford Bronco began a problem one month ago. Driving normally, the engine would fade and stop and then could not be re-started. After a waiting period of several hours it would start again but the problem would reoccurr after the vehicle was parked for a while and you went to start it. We took it to a Ford dealer and they stated the alternator was fine. Seems there is spark but no fuel at ignition point. Tied it to a fuel supply problem. We have rebuilt the carburator, replaced the battery, replaced the fuel pump, replaced hoses, belts, spark plugs, fuel lines, etc.

We have spent 1600.00 and still climbing. Is there a sensor or a check list of issues that should be checked in an orderly process of elimination to get to the problem you could suggest?

After each repair, it works for a day and then it happens again. This has happened three times.

1200.00 of the 1600.00 was for an engine rebuild.

A:  Yikes.... pick up a spare ignition unit..... the square aluminum box with either 2 or 3 plugs connected to it..... Click a blue Buyers button on http://www.all-parts.com..... And the next time it quits, plug in the new box and see if it runs..... Ed
