Drive Train / Driveline Making Noise When driving Always

Q:  When shifting from park to reverse or first gear, the transmission will sometimes slip or make a chunking sound.I can manually select 2nd gear and drive off in it then shift to third and overdrive with no problems.I fear a replacement or a rebuild is necessary but would appreciate some professional advice from an unbiased source before heading to the den of thieves.

A:  Clunking sound when dropping it in 1st or reverse and not when you put it in 2nd gear usually means that you have some play in the ring gear/rear end....if I were a betting man...someone has a heavy foot and likes the smell of fresh burning rubber smell...It happens to the best of us, you need the rear end shimmed if it not TOO BAD! Thanks Dwayne
