Drive Train / Driveline Chugging When driving Always
Q: The transmission is shifting somewhat rough into all gears. The car only has 1000 miles on it. It's not as smooth as my wife's 2000 Ford Taurus Station Wagon.
A: It's a different transmission, and also the Mustang is supposed to be higher performance shifting. However there is also a point of "to harsh" and only you will know that. Ed

Q: I have a '98 GT Convertible and 27540 zr17. Would there be enough clearence if I put a lowering kit 12 to 2 inch in??
I do not hear any rubbing or any sounds at this time.
A: Tough call from behind my computer...... I would reccommend placing a layer of putty on your tire tops and bouncing the front and back down to full stop.... See if it imprints any of the putty.....
Also turn the front wheels side to side during the front bouncing....... Ed
Q: Where is the oil plug on a 1996 mustang convertable 3.8l engine?
A:
The oil plug is in the bottom of the oil pan over the cross brace if it is a convertable, you will have to go up through a hole in the brace to get to it.

A: You may have a possible egr problem or a possible map sensor problem.
Q: Could you please tell me how the balance weight on the front of the crankshaft held on, is this part of the crank, keyed on or bolted? Mine has come adrift and is rattling round.
The car started to 'judder'and there was a ratting sound I noticed the balancing weight had come lose although the crank is still moving... any advice !!!!
How much for a new engine?!!!! Or just a new crankshaft and anything else that I might need for repairing a Mustang GT Convertible 5.0 liter V8 1994 model??
Thanks
Malcolm
A: This is a removable piece. You can put a new one on....... It dosen't sound like you need a new one..... Ed
Q: Can I make this car lighter? The 92 Mustang LX 5.0 Convertible automatic is heavier than the GT and sedan, 200 pounds heavier, and I guess slower. I didn't know this when I first bought the car.
My Mustang has 2.73 gears. What gears should I go to for a stock motor that would make a big change in performance?
Thank you!
A: The extra weight is because of strengthening in the frame and body to compensate for no roof......
3:23 are a good match.....
3:55 are getting extreme for you..... Ed
Q: Can anyone tell me what throttle body is on my 2.3?
I need to know what that so i know if i can upgrade or not.
Thanks for your time and effort.
A: Throttle body is a form of fuel injection. Fuel injection shoot straight in to the engine, throttle body works a little differently. It is upgradeable. Try throttle body spacers.

Q: The directional lights won't work, but hazards will... Why?
A: there are 2 flashers one for the turn signals and one for the hazards. the hazards are on the fuze panel and the turn signals are behind the right center of the insturment panel by the radio area on the passanger side.
Q: How can I tell if the oxygen sensor has gone bad?? Thanks!
A: You can check for codes from the computer.
Or, check for a fluctuation voltage from the 02 sensor
...from about 3 volts to 7 volts ranging steadily back
and forth, with the engine fully warmed and run at 2000
rpm for at least a minute.
Then check before it cools down.....Ed

Q: I am trying to find out if the rear axle on a Lincoln will swap with the axle on a Mustang.
I have an '89 GT Mustang Convertible and I've been stripping an '89 Lincoln Town Car for parts.
Some people say I can, and some say I can't.
This will complete the five lug conversion but i need to know for sure and no one seems to be able to help if you cant who can?
Please advise... thank you.
Bryan
A: A tape measure and a good eye will tell you most things....
Watch for gear ratio differences....
1. park brake cable hook ups....
2. drive shaft connection points....
3. brake line connections...
4. overall width from backing plate to backing plate....
And possibly a brake proportioning valve is required.....Ed
Q: I have a 2.3 L 4cyl and would like to add as much extra HP as possible. What would you suggest and where can I find it?
If I add more HP, should I consider regearing my tranny?
A: First, rebuild for heavier clutch packs in the transmission.... Then bolt a nitrous fogger system on the engine.
That will give you about $550.00 worth of horsepower, that's an extra 100 HP or so.....
Another benefit.... you're not wearing anything out, just regular driving also...... Ed
Q: We just purchased an 89 Mustang LX Convertible.
We got the car for short money because the 2.3L engine is shot.
I'd like to upgrade to either the 3.8L or a 5.0.
Which will require the least modifications? (ie crossmember, radiator, computer etc...) The rest of the car is cherry, so I'm not afraid to spend the cash. Thanx!
A: First, don't waste your money on a 3.8... put a carburated 5 litre in it.

Q: THE 2.3 4CYL, RUNS FINE THEN, IT STARTS MISSING ALL OF A SUDDEN, TODAY IT WAS RUNNING VERY BAD, TO THE POINT THAT IT WOULD NOT MOVE, I GOT HOME OPENED THE HOOD AND THE EXHAUST MANIFOLD WAS GLOWING RED, I LET THE CAR IDLE FOR A WHILE AND THE EXHAUST MANIFOLD COOLED DOWN I ACCELERATED THE MOTOR AND IT RESPONDED WELL, I CANNOT FIGURE OUT WHY THE EXHAUST MANIFOLD WAS GLOWING RED.
A: your "cat" (catalytic converter) is plugged up.Take the front two cats off (located right under the manifold) and replace them with a straight pipe. Thats what happened to my mustang too
Heating / Cooling System Malfunction Happens always Always
Q: O.K. here it is. When I bought this car used, I knew that the heat was a problem. I have no heat, but the fans work great. (Blows alot of air) I hooked up the heater core from the two openings in the firewall, and the heater worked great. Plenty of hot air. While I was admiring my handy work, the car stalled. Now this car has never stalled on me before. So I turned her over again, and the same thing happend, over and over again. Now I know that the heater core is o.k. because I pulled back the carpet on the passengers side floor, and there was no moisture. Someone told me that the EGR Valve could be bad? When I by pass the heater core, the car runs great. When I hook it up.........no luck. What do you think it could be. Please don't say the heater core, I don't want an all day/night job. Thanks.
A: From here, the only thing possible that comes to mind is that the heater core may be causing an overheating problem..
If so, the computer will shut the engine down to prevent damage, but this is rare........ Ed
Q: I have the 2.3L EFI engine. Me and my father purchased the car for a great price, and we knew that it needed some engine work. When we got it home, we began to see what the problem was. First off, the car seemed like she wanted to crank over. The pulleys were cranking and stuff, but she wouldn't start. The next weekend we tried to start it again. As the last time, she tried to start but this time she locked up after a couple of tries. I started doing some research about the engines and I found out that the head gasket could be the likely culprit. The radiator had no water or anti-freeze in it, so we poured a couple of gallons of water in there. To my fathers surprise, he started seeing some water come out from the oil pan. The pan was already leaking oil and we assumed that all we had to do was change it. Could it be that the cylinder head was cracked? The previous owner told us that the car broke down on her when they went over a speed bump at Six Flags. She never got it started again. So, do I need to look for a new engine or would it be cheaper to just fix it?
A: I guess at this point you may as well tear the engine apart slowly and look for the cause. It will be a learning experience and then you can decide if it is cheaper to replace it with a good used engine or fix what you have. Ed
Q: I am looking for the Window Plastic Mouldings. Those which the windows are protected (or hold) the windows whether they are "up or down". These are mouldings for the side glasses on my car. I believe that the colliquial term is "weatherstrips". Thank you. Charles F. Arney
A: Click 'Buyers' under Wholesale.... 'Weather Stripping' is under Body.... also through the Auto Recyclers section.... Ed

Q: I am getting my 1986 Ford Mustang LX Convertible painted and I am looking for decals for it . I would like to have two Mustang symbols on each door and pinstripes running off from it . Where can I find info. on this?
Q: Can a 351 be put into this car??? Without major reconstruction??? 1985 Mustang LX convertible. It's got a 3.8 in it now.
A: I have never done this one but..... anything is possible with lots of cash....
I would use your internet to find some of the many Mustang car clubs out there and you will get to communicate with someone who HAS done this swap....
That person will have already solved the nightmares and can tell you yes or no and why........ Ed
Electrical / Lighting Systems Malfunction When driving When warm
Q: I have an '83 Mustang Convertible. When I use the high beams, the circuit breaker begins to cycle after about a minute.
I have replaced the switch in the steering column already.
Any thoughts or help on the cause and how to fix it would be appreciated.
A: If you have gone to higher power lights, you then need to wire in a load reduction relay. Ed
Q: The back barrels are not getting fuel, the accelerator
pump is clear, where could the clog be?
A: The accelerator pump works only on the front barrels unless you are running a holly double pumper carb....
Check to make sure the the rear float is set correctly and the needle rises up freely off the seat, to allow fuel to fill the rear bowl.....Ed
Q: When replacing brake lines from the master cylinder to the pressure differential valve (2 lines about 12 inches long), do they have to be curled up, or can I make them straight?
Joseph
A: Yes, you can make them straight.....
Some would argue that the increased length will affect the brake fluid pulse timing at the rear wheels, if you are pushing the system that far to the max...... Ed

Q: I'm looking to upgrade my brakes from drum to disc. I know there are kits available, but I haven't been able to find any information on what kit I need, where to get it, and some accompanying instructions. Any thoughts? Thanks.
A: Use the internet to connect to one of the hundreds of Mustang clubs around; they will have those answers for you.... Ed
