Electrical / Lighting Systems Malfunction When driving When warm

Q:  When driving at or above 75 mph the warning signal/beeping sound is constantly beeping. This is the same sound that tells you that you need to buckle your safety belt.

I was also wondering if the PCM Power Control Module affects the speedometer. I received a ticket and the officer said I was doing 90 mph when the Speedometer only stated 78 mph. Could the PCM affect the speedometer.

Thank you

A:  Is the seat belt picture flashing? Could be a random electrical bug. Might have something to do with your speed sensor (reporting to you the wrong speed). Check engine light on?

Heating / Cooling System Other Not applicable Not applicable

Q:  When turning on the rear climate control to the a/c position the heat comes on instead of the a/c. Also, the door adjar indicator and interior lights stay on when all the doors are closed. I would like to find a complete wiring schematic for this vehicle.

A:  In your case I would have a close look at the wire connectors inside where your sliding door shuts, on the door and on the body side where the pins meet when the door is shut.

Fuel System Tuning Not applicable Always

Q:  What is the t.p.s. voltage amount? what is the process for checking and or setting?

A:  5 volt reference. The tps is best tested with an automotive scope (glitches exist that can't be seen without one). An ohm-meter can be used. Engine OFF and key OFF! View the sensors output, it should change smoothly and consistantly, as the sensor is moved. If not sensor is bad. But as stated, you may miss a slight glitch.

All Part Groups Malfunction When driving Always

Q:  We have had many problems with this car, we have already totally rebuilt the transmission, brake work, exhaust, our ABS light comes on for no apparent reason, my automatic door locks work when they feel like it, like 10 minutes after we start down the road all the doors will lock and the light will go off. Our starter coil cracked.

We have been having trouble when we start out it hesitates and chugs along then smooths out,. we changed oil, spark plugs checked wires air cleaner replaced and fuel line filter, we put fuel injector cleaner in no difference noticed. What do ya think? Piece of crap right... ha Any advice would be welcome.

A:  first off the ford switch is a money maker designed to wear out so you buy another......but the chuging might be something in the pressure of your car you can get that checked at any shop for nothing!

Drive Train / Driveline Other When driving When warm

Q:  The tranny down shifts very hard when the van is warm.

A:  There are some questions that need answering before we can go much further......

Is this a new problem?.... What was done to the van just previous to this problem starting?

For instance, if the throttle position switch is changed on these Fords, I recall the transmission control unit has to be reset to match the new tps.....

Was the engined tuned up?.... the transmission fluid changed?.... has the van been rear-ended? etc.... Let me know and we can go from there.... good luck.... Ed

Windows / Glass Other Happens always Always

Q:  The window will not go down on the passanger side, is this a motor problem with the window being automatic, or is this something that could be fixed failry cheap?

A:  Could be the motor , also check that power is getting to the motor from the switch and that the machanical system is functioning properly . For the last point , you will need to remove the inside panel of the door . Get a manual for the repair of chassis issues first .

Drive Train / Driveline Malfunction When driving Always

Q:  My Windstar has 143,000 miles on it. I replaced the transmission at 135,000.

On longer drives, the overdrive light will begin to blink. If I drive for 35 minutes or so, the overdrive light starts blinking. The transmission seems "sluggish" when this happens.

I thought it was a 4 speed transmission. On my ride to and from work, the transmission will occasionally downshift as I go over and overpass. But not all the way to 3rd, but to 3.5 or something. If I push the button to shut off the overdrive, at 65, the engine runs at about 3,000 RPM. With overdrive on, it runs at about 2,100 RPM at 65. With cruise on, when it half downshifts at the overpass, at 65 it turns at 2,600 RPM.

But while doing this, the overdirve light is NOT blinking. That will happen if I continue to drive long enough.

My real concern is taking the car on long trips. I live in Florida, where the land is real flat. My son goes to school in Illinois. I would like to drive the van up there to pick up his things this next summer.

Thanks for any help you can give me.

A:  There isn't really a 3.5 gear. Overdrive is the gear your van goes into, to conserve fuel and provide enough power to cruise along at highway speeds. When you want to pass, and you goose the gas pedal, you activate the kickdown switch which throws you into the next lower gear to get the power you need to pass. I don't recomend turning off the overdrive switch at really high speeds. The 3.5 gear you are talking about is probably your car thinking you want or need a lower gear for power for a few seconds. Are you unconciously letting off the gas when coming to an overpass?

Engine Malfunction Happens always When cold

Q:  1995 Ford Windstar 3.8 L V-6 engine coolant temperature sensor malfunctioning. During cold start of the engine the temperature guage will climb to the hot position and hold for five minutes then drop down to the operating temperature for the run-time of the engine. Believe the ECT sensor is bad(?) Could that be the reason? Have changed the thermostat, did not correct the problem.

A:  you could possably have a bad head or head gasket, ford has had big problems on the 95 windstar with head gaskets leaking, you may want to look into it from fords end because they were fixing the problem but milage and if you were the original owner made a difference, that is where i would start.
