A:  All rules of good checking apply to all cars.. The 323 has been a very good car.... reliable and if the oil has been changed regularly, 300,000 km or 200,00 miles is not uncommon... Ed

Electrical / Lighting Systems Won't Start Happens always Always

Q:  I have recently put in 2 used alternators for my 323 only to have them work for 2 days and then 6 days. I guess I have a wiring problem. Basically I guess that I'm asking how does the alternator get wired up. One wire on the plug to the alternator (the big one) does get voltage when the ignition switch is on but the other (smaller) wire gets nothing. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

A:  There is a wire that goes to the engine itself that could be faulty

Engine Other Not applicable Not applicable

Q:  I have an opportunity to buy a 1987 Mazda 323 for 150 bucks... It runs, but the owner says that it has a thrown rod... and the tranny is an automatic has no reverse and the only gear it has in drive is first gear... so i suspect that the tranny is toast....

My question is.... How expensive would it be to buy a complete drive train, long block + tranny?

Or do you recommend I rebuild the engine? Again, the engine runs and sounds good.

There is just that knock that the owner says is the thrown rod. So do you think it would be cheaper to rebuild the engine, or.. ?

A:  If the body is in very good shape, and so is the interior..... click the blue Buyers button and locate a complete engine transmission unit....... fast and least expensive..... Ed

Ignition System Won't Start When starting Always

Q:  rotates but will not start gets no spark past coil

A:  If you are getting spark at the coil, it would have to be your plug wires. If you are not getting spark from the coil, it is probably your ignition module in the distributor. If you replace the module, be sure to use ONLY a BRASS feeler gauge to set the gap.

Ignition System Won't Start Happens always Always

Q:  no spark from coil

A:  If you have no spark from your coil the you should try checking your solinoid, thats probablly bad. You have your battery's positive cable going to the solinoid and then to the coil. Hope you figure it out- Jason

Fuel System Malfunction When stopped When cold

Q:  Car does not start but will fire up with some gas poured into carb. What's that mean?

A:  Your not getting fuel to the carb. Could be a clogged line or filter or the fuel pump could be bad. Take the fuel line loose at the carb then turn the engine over a few times to see if you are getting gas out of the line if no gas then work your way back untill you get a flow of gas. If you do get gas at the carb then you need to rebuild the carb.
