Fuel System Smelling When stopped When warm

Q:  1989 Mercury Gran Marquis 5.0 fuel injected. After a 20 minute drive at 70 mph I stopped and shut off the car. About a quart of gas gushed out of the filler cap onto the ground. I removed the cap after it stopped and had normal rush of air. I drove another 20 minutes at 70 mph and the problem did not repeat. What is wrong? Thanks!

A:  It sounds a lot like the fuel tank vent was plugged.... how full was the tank???.... Did you fill it cold and drive it until hot???... Does the exhaust heat up the fuel tank and cause expansion???

Drive Train / Driveline Other When driving Always

Q:  It will not shift out of first gear. I changed transmissions three times and reajusted shifting linkage and tv cable multiple times. It acts like a vaccuum module, but transmission experts say it isn't vaccuum or computer operated. So what is it controlled with and why won't it shift?

A:  Outside chance here, but... Test the cooler by disconnecting the transmission lines from the radiator, and connecting them together with a rubber hose... The cooler may be plugged and not allowing fluid flow.... Ed

Ignition System Malfunction When starting When warm

Q:  I have a 1983 Mercury Grand Marquis, 302 v8 EFI, with the duraspark III ignition system. This problem just recently started.

The car starts fine when cold, but after about 4 or 5 minutes the car shuts itself off, and won't start again for about 10 to 20 minutes.

I had the ignition module tested and it checked out as good. I haven't had a chance to check the crank case position sensor yet.

Do you think that might be the problem?

I checked the ignition coil after the car stoped and there is no spark, but the engine turns over like it is trying to start.

And i found out that if i turn the key from off to start, about every 6th try i get one spark, and thats it.

Any suggestions?

A:  Crank case position sensor???. I guess you mean crank shaft position sensor. That could be your problem. It has happened before.

Fuel System Tuning Not applicable When warm

Q:  My car is running a little rich right now. I need to adjust the carburator to get more oxygen to the gasoline. The type of carburator is the variable venturi. Is this just a "turn a screw" kind of operation or does it require more than that?? How will I be able to measure the the correct oxygen/ gas mix? Thank you.

A:  Sensitive equipment is required to measure the mixture... the ideal ratio is 14:1...... The variable venturi carb is awful to work on..... the mixture settings are through the top if I remember corectly.... This is worth you buying a manual specifically for these carbs if you wish to attempt to work on it..
