Q: I have a 4 second pause when engaging any forward gears. Changing to reverse gear is immediate.
No sounds, smells, noises, etc.
Overdrive works.
Had the oil changed and they checked all the fluid levels.
Have not checked the transmission fluid level myself.
A: If the fluid level is okay, you have a seal problem. Internal. Ed

Q: 2 problems
1st - my windshield washer does not work. I checked the pump motor in the holding tank by connecting it to 12 volt and it works. Circuit breaker is ok. Is there anything between the the turn signal arm where the button for the washer is and the pump motor?
2nd - The fuse for the dome lights and door buzzers keeps blowing. The buzzers don't work. I think one is shorted. Where are they located so I can check?
Thanks
Chris
A: Door buzzers usually in the fuse panel or very close. Washer pump circuit is not complete between the switch and the motor. Ed

Q: heater core seems to be filled with core sand no heat comes out. doors open etc.nee to know how to remove. do i take the metal plate under the crash pad off too. not much room to move unit rearward.can only get to one of four screws on top of core housing. any hints would be most appreciated. thanks tom
A: I have never heard of core sand but if you want to remove the heater core you will need to remove the dash, its not as bad as it sounds to replace the core.
A: Usually in the fuse box.
It may be the cigarette lighter fuse or radio.
you should check to see if your horn is any good a hot wire from the battery to the horn
connector on the horn will do the trick
Q: I have a 1986 Mercury Marquis that apparently has a serious transmission problem as I can not get it to move in any directions.
The transmission fluid appeared to be about a 1/3rd of the stick's full level as it was a bit low but I didn't believe it was low enough to keep it from engaging into any gear.
But I added more transmission fluid anyway but still have the same problem.
I've got a 1992 Mercury Sable that has a minor trans gasket leak that goes down to about a 1/3rd of the sticks full level also but never anymore and I have no trans problems with it.
The 1986 marquis has a six cylinder engine with rear wheel drive. The drive shaft & universals are fine, as is the linkage also.
While I was driving the '86 Marquis, it acted like a coil or points had gone out as it went down in speed but without engine miss.
And I had to floor it to maintain a speed of about 30 miles an hour, until it stopped going forward alltogether... in other words, it continued in a neutral type position until it coasted to a complete stop even though I was in the drive position.
No matter what gear I put it in It apparently is in neutral. The Park position still works normally and the engine works fine also.
I wondered if the torque converter went bad? Or is there a external transmission modulator valve on the '86 marquis (if it has one) that could cause this problem or is it something more serious?
Please email me ASAP or at your earliest convience on what you suspect or know is the problem at.....Inet5@aol.com
Thanks.
A: Torque convertor is one possibility, and so is the transmission oil pump.... at the front of the transmission.... and more to my thinking as the cause....
Probably a used one is the fast cheap way out of the problem... Ed
Q: Hello,
My 1986 Mercury Marquis stalled after starting it and It is not getting any fuel. The fuel rail has the correct pressure on the line but no fuel is going through the injecters. I think this is an electrical problem but what device controls the injectors?
Thanks,
Ray
Electrical / Lighting Systems Malfunction When braking Always
Q: My brake lights are not working and I have checked the fuse and the brake light switch has been changed. Still no good. It is the only thing that needs to be repaired to pass inspection.
A: Check the bulbs first, it would be unusual that they would both burn out at the same time, but could happen. If bulbs OK, check for a break in the wiring somewhere between the brake light switch and the rear. Also check that the rear lights are grounded. Bulbs first, make sure power off the brake light switch, ground third. This is something simple to fix, just got to check it out.DB
