Drive Train / Driveline Making Noise When driving When warm

Q:  During the winter, it takes 10 - 15 minutes to start hearing a knocking noise that seems to come from around the drivers side floor pan.

During the summer, it starts in a few minutes of driving at around 30mph to 35mph or over. It seems to be tied to speed.

The u-joints seem good.... not tight or loose.
It has a C5 transmission in it. I can move the yoke up around 3/8". I put the rear up on stands and ran the car up to 35 and did not hear the knocking.

Does it have a bearing of some type in the tail
shaft? It has a one piece drive shaft.

What could be the problem?

A:  Need more information here... there are a lot of possibilities....

Is the knocking relative to what gear the car is in?.... in other words.... is the noise relative to road speed or engine RPM?....

Does it change when turning corners or braking to a stop?.... Is it louder upon acceleration or deceleration?...

Where do you feel the knocking?.. Is it in the steering wheel, or dash board or seats or floor pan?...... Ed

Fuel System Malfunction Happens always Always

Q:  I have a 1982 Mercury Zephyr with a 3.3 liter 6-cyl and a 1 bbl carb (is that a holley 1946?) that has several fuel system problems.

It frequently runs-on, when you shut off the ignition fuel continues to pour into the venturi. It dies at an idle even with the curb idle screw all the way in.

I rebuilt the carburetor with no effect, I noticed that it idles faster with a double vacuum hose disconnected from the driver's side of the air cleaner but when it warms up like this it gets even harder to keep running.

Also, my car is missing it's emission system decal, what is the correct sparkplug gap?

A:  That particular carb is very hard to rebuild and make it stick--especially if it has been done more than once. Replacement is most llikely your best option now--have found them in salvage yards for $25
