Q:  Where is the fuel filter located on a 2000 Mistsubishi Galant 2.4 litre engine?

A:  In between the trunk wall and the outer licence plate wall. It's a bear to get out... unless you have munchkin hands. I finally got it out.......Hint wear safety glasses.. all of that trapped road grime falls directly on your face! Good Luck....

Q:  how do i remove frt suspention springs

A:  You can get a tool designed to do that however if you are not experienced at it let a shop do it.These springs are under a lot of pressure and can do a lot of damage if not done correctly. It doesnt cost that much to have it done by a shop.

Brake System Making Noise When braking Always

Q:  When I brake, my car makes a loud squeeky sound. I recently changed the front brakes. What now?

A:  Some shops use less-than-best-quality pads, and also do not machine the front rotors properly. Both contribute to the squeal... There are products available at the local jobber parts store that you can soak the pads in to greatly reduce this annoying sound.... Another option is to toe-in the brake pads... Ed

Q:  One of my belts fell off and im not sure which one it is. I do know that that its not the alternator, or the compressor, but i dont know what else it could be. Its a 1997 Mitsubishi Galant DE, 5 sp, 4cl

A:  It could be your power steering pump. Look under the hood at the pulleys. More than likely it is your power steering belt.

Heating / Cooling System Making Noise When driving When warm

Q:  There is a knocking noise coming from the air conditioning compressor. It doesn't knock when you first start the A/C. It only happens once the compressor clicks off, and then cycles back on again. Please help. Thanks

A:  First things first...lubricate the belt....if you didn't
turn the car off before applying the lube to the belt, go
in your house and bandage your hand.....ok ok.....

How quickly does the compressor cycle on and off? If it's
in short cycle mode, then the refrigerant is low....

The oil for lubrication in the system is carried in with the
refrigerant.... If the refrigerant is low, so is the oil....

An a/c compressor is just like a car engine - crankshaft,
pistons, etc......

Be very careful here... A loong screw driver held
handle-end-to-your-ear and pointed-end-to-the-compressor will
tell you exactly where the sound is coming from....Ed

Engine Won't Start When driving When warm

Q:  For the second time in two years my car battery has become drained. I had not driven the car in 2-3 days. The car won't turn over or take a charge. Last time I changed the battery and everything was fine. Is it my starter, alternator or something else?

A:  It can still be the battery. Go back to "square one" with the checking of the system, etc. Battery should still be under warranty if that is the problem. Ed

Ignition System Malfunction When starting When warm

Q:  When cold the car starts and runs fine, but after even short trips the engine will turn over when the starter is engaged but will not run or even attempt to fire. After several attempts to start the car it usually starts and runs fine till stopped again. During cold weather the problem does not happen as often. The spark plugs have been changed but it did not help. The car has 65000 miles on it.

A:  You need to determine if it is a spark or a fuel no start warm problem. Ed

Engine Won't Start Happens sometimes Not applicable

Q:  For the past few months the engine has idled between 800 and 1000 rpm, usually closser to 800. I attributed this to a malfuntioning sensor and didn't give it much thought since the car ran perfectly. Though after a long drive up to the mountains I stopped at the top of a pass and turned the car off. When I went to start it again it chugged twice then turned over with no inclinatoin of starting. I shut the car off for ten minutes then tried it again. It turned started and drove with great performence fifty miles to home.

The next day it wouldn't start at first but later did like before. This happened again that after noon. That same eveving after work while I was traveling at about 45 mph it lost all power. The electrical system, meaning the lighs radio ect., appeared to operate as usual. After this the car would not start. I didn't hear any unusual noises and when the car ran it never showed any signs of trouble but the low idle.

A:  My suggestion : if u haven't had an oil change yet, do so. check the idle level by adjusting the screw right by the throttle body(the cable that runs from your gas pedal to the engine throttle to make it go) it might need adjusting leave car off and adjust, then to check turn it on and give it gas you'll see the differce in idle not to loose car won't turn on,not to tight , idle will be too high. also check if the cable is too tight if it's too tight, then loosen it very little leave car on and carefully loosen about 1 or two adjusting screws that hold the cable itself to the engine block then give it gas don't put it too tight or too much gas will be given at idle, if u start feeling too much push when changing from reverse to drive, then loosen it.

Drive Train / Driveline Other When driving Always

Q:  I had transmission work done on the car about two years ago, so the warranty ran out about a month ago. I was driving home from work and the car started to putt- putt down the highway, and the transmission gears seem like they were grinding. The fastest I could go was 15 mph. The car will not go in reverse at all. Do you think that the car transmission is done? Thanks

A:  Sure does sound like it.... Is the fluid level okay etc??? Almost sounds as though the transmission is trying to go into 2 gears at the same time....Ed

Brake System Making Noise When stopped Always

Q:  Dear Sir,
My car was in an accident and the rear door, bumper and rear wheel are damaged.

The impact effected a displacement between the center of the hub-disk and axle so it seems that tire is lounged about axle.

But after this incident I drove the car 300 mile with low speed, about 30 mph.

Please advise me what I should change in kinematic part. Thanks.
Sincerely yours,
Vasilchenko

A:  Not sure how to help you.... I would take it apart and make a judgement call on the parts needed and go from there....... Ed

Q:  RECALL! In about 1995 there was a recall on the seatbelts. They said that the red release buttons would crack in the heat of the sun and pieces could jam the lock. I didnt take it in because mine were fine but now theyre malfunctioning. When I took it in about two years ago they said there was no recall on record. Does anyone remember this.

Engine Malfunction When driving When warm

Q:  My car was giving problems for a long time. I was finally able to have it worked on just recently. Its problem was that when I would drive it I would feel it lunge forward at different times(very regularly). While idling it would also sound like the exhaust was pushing out busts of air and sound like it was trying to die. Then it died while I was driving it. I towed it to the shop. They replaced the Idle intake valve and the plugs. Now it wants to do practically the same thing, but not as bad. The idle still fluctuates and when I drive it it almost feels like I have it in the wrong gear but I dont. Its worse when I slow down. It jolts forward until I speed up again. They said they checked the rotor and cap and injectors. They (manufacturer) cant find anything. Whats wrong?

A:  I expect a plugged catalytic convertor... Look at that first.... Ed

Q:  With a fully charged battery, the car is fine for one day. Then the battery goes dead!? It has a 70 amp alternator which - when the car is running - only reads the battery voltage. Does it need a new alternator?

A:  It sure does sound like it....however you may be able to change just the voltage regulator and save a bunch of money ....have it checked as guessing costs a lot....Ed

Ignition System Malfunction When driving When warm

Q:  Driving to work at 60 m.p.h., car died without a sound. I cranked it as it coasted to a stop to try to restart it, but nothing. Next day, nothing--cranks fine, but no start. Just need to know what this commonly might be. Thanks.

A:  Does it crank fine, or cranks actually faster and without compression? I would check the timing belt. Ed

Chassis / Suspension & Steering Malfunction When driving Always

Q:  The red light indicating a problem with the suspension comes on after a few miles of driving. (1990 Mitsubishi Galant GS with electronic suspension) There are no problems with the car, and the car performs fine. However the manual says to check immediately with the dealer. Have you heard of this problem and what can I expect if I continue to drive this vehicle. Thanks.

A:  Serious...pull over immediately and get it towed for repair
The galant's Electronically Controlled Suspension uses air bags to inflate/deflate suspension for specific uses ie. sport driving or high speed driving.
Red light engages when a hole is found in a suspension airbag. The suspension airbags are filled up by an aircompressor which automatically switches on and off. If the red light comes on it means there is a hole and the compressor keeps on pumping continuously. Bad news. If u keep on driving it will be costly ie. $2 000

Engine Tuning When driving When warm

Q:  My engine idles at 1000 rpm and we'd like to decrease to it 750 rpms. We adjusted the basic idle setting (with rubber on it) located on throttle body. We turned it clockwise till it stopped, but the rpm did not decrease.

How should I do to this idle setting so that we can decrease to 750 rpm??

Should I remove the throttle valve to clean it??

Or something else which I must do? Please advise us. Thanks you.

A:  I think that cleaning the Idle Air Control system would be a good start for you. Ed

A:  It is an old car it is probably not the relay or the fuse it is probaly bilt up crud in the switch or a bad ground for the windows I have repaired a ton of these and if it is intermitantly it is probably the switch.
