Electrical / Lighting Systems Malfunction Happens always Always

Q:  The fuel gauge doesn't work. The voltage limiter has been replaced. I appreciate any guidance.

A:  You'll want to test the guage and the sending unit... So with the key on.... engine off.... ground the power wire leading into the fuel tank for the fuel tank sending unit. Watch the gauge..... If the gauge moves, the problem is the sending unit.... If not, the problem is the wire to the gauge, or the gauge itself... Ed

Engine Other Not applicable Not applicable

Q:  My problem is trying to find a definitive answer on the motor in a convertible I recently bought. It's supposed to be a 318 polyspheric. It has two bolt holes on the valve cover gaskets at either end. The valve cover gaskets have a scalloped lower edge. I'm told this identifies the engine as a 318 poly, could you verify this and are there other, better ways to be sure? Thanks.

A:  Yup. Chrysler performance dept has all identification info for you. Ed

Engine Making Noise When driving When warm

Q:  I HAVE A 1966 PLYMOUTH BELVEDERE WITH A 440 ENGINE.I KEEP HEARING A NOISE IN MY ENGINE ABOUT 2500 RPMS.IT SOUNDS LIKE SLIGHT RAPPING OF A HAMMER.IT DOES NOT MAKE THE NOISE UNLESS THE ENGINE IS UNDER A LOAD.I HAVE LOWERD THE TIMMING THINKING IT WAS DETONATION,AND I HAVE EVEN TRIED USING 100 OCTANE FUEL BUT THAT HASEN'T HELPED.THE OIL PRESSURE IS VERY GOOD AND IT DOSENT MAKE A SOUND WHEN IT IS IDILING.COULD THIS BE A ROD NOISE OR IS IT SOMETHING ELSE? THE ENGINE WAS REBUILT 3 YEARS AGO AND I DIVE THE CAR MAYBE 400 MILES A MONTH.
ANY HELP WOULD BE APPRECIATED.
THANKS ERIC KIMBARL

A:  It could be a loose piston pin, a piston skirt slapping because it wobbles at that certain speed, or it might be in the valve train.

Electrical / Lighting Systems Malfunction When driving When warm

Q:  This is an intermitent problem.

When idling at a stop sign the instrument lights will become very dim. The headlights will also dim (but not go out).

After the car is fully warmed up the headlights will go off and on. They will go completely off and remain off for 2-5 seconds then come back on. The instrument lights and tail lights will remain on. This seems to happen only at higher speeds (over 30 mph).

Often if I park and let it sit for awhile both of the problems will disappear and it will operate normally.

I have replaced the voltage regulator and the dimmer switch. I am runing the original alternator.

A:  Possible alternator problem but my suspicion would be the headlight relay or resistor. Ed
