Engine Tuning When starting Always

Q:  My 1958 Plymouth with a 230 L head six won't start. It sat outside for a few months over the winter.

The engine turns over and is getting spark and gas.

I decided to check the timing and pulled the spark plug out of cylinder #1 to bring it up to tdc.

When I looked down into the cylinder while cranking the engine by hand, I noticed that the piston is only moving up and down about 1 1/2 inches (the stroke should be over 4 inches).

After seeing this I decided to check the other cylinders and each one was the same as number 1.

The starter is cranking the engine and sounds normal so I think the crank is ok.

I can't imagine the rods or pins could all be bent or broken. Also, I would think I would be hearing some nasty sounds even when just cranking the engine.

Please let me know if you could shed some light on this situation.

A:  Put a few drops of oil in each cylinder and crank the engine over by hand a few times.... Then put new spark plgs in the holes and start it up.... Ed
