Drive Train / Driveline Making Noise When driving Always

Q:  Our 1996 Pontiac Trans-am has been making a very loud roaring noise for about two weeks now.

The sound is at the rear passenger side of the car. (It's been making the noise for about 2 months but just got louder.) They said I need a totally new rear end. Is this possible?

The car only has 60,000 miles on it. Back when the noise first started I took the car to 2 different mechanics and they couldn't find anything.

At that time, my brother who is also experienced in car repair, suggested without having driven it, that the problem might be a wheel bearing.

What do you think? Thank you for any help. LISA

A:  Sounds like a wheel bearing from your description.... To prove the theory.... turn corners in the car. If the noise gets quieter one way and louder the other way.... wheel bearing.....Ed

Q:  blinkers won't blink they do when i hit the hazzards they come on but don't blink i changed the flasher fuse i have a reverse light out

A:  Did you recently change the bulbs? If a lower wattage bulb is put in,the system won't have enough load to cycle the flasher.Check all the bulbs to make sure they are right, then turn your hazards on,walk around and make sure they ALL light. One bad bulb will cause the whole side to stay on steady, same as the incorrect bulb.

Q:  If I add a high performance MAF sensor to my car, will it have any negative effects on my car? Will I have to adjust anything

A:  It will only add more fuel per RPM for your car..... more gas... more power....... It just "tricks" the computer... It may also effect your oxygen sensor.... Ed

Q:  About 5 to 10 minutes after starting my car (after it warms up) I get a service engine soon light. Could this be the fan relay switch?

A:  More likely the oxy sensor, but you can find out by retrieving the codes and then checking the system that is indicated..... Ed

Q:  My front lights lift, but make a terrible noise on the driver's side. I think it's the lampmotor lift?

A:  Make sure there is nothing obstructing the light. Check to see if the noise is coming from the motor used to lift the lights. You can try lifting the lights manually by using the knob to see if it's the motor or not.

Electrical / Lighting Systems Malfunction Not applicable Not applicable

Q:  Hatchback pull down, does not return to up position when hatchback release is pushed and hatch is open. The remote switch operated release relay operates and there is 12 volts at the red/white lead that provides hot all the time to the latch up-down motor but it never reversed and rose back up to a position to engage again.

A:  hook 2 lead wires direct from ground and 12volt power source to lift motor terminals, it should turn one direction. reverse wire location and should turn other direction. that will tell you if motor is good or not. if tests good replace levered switch that activates up down. should be lever that rides up and down with latch. known to go bad. had same problem with my 90 firebird. any problems with directions email hotrod5@hotmail.com

Engine Other Happens always Always

Q:  The engine has a terrible miss in it. It smooths out a bit once it warms up. However, when you drop it in drive, it begins to miss almost to the point of quitting. There are no vacuum leaks that I can find. The engine is a 5.0 liter tuned port injection. The engine has recieved new plugs, distributor cap, plug wires, and rotor button.

A:  Check the injectors to make sure they're working correctly. If all is good, try performing a compression test on all cylinders. This will test the piston rings and the valves.

Engine Malfunction When starting When warm

Q:  Sometimes my engine smokes upon taking off from a stop, and when sitting idle at a stop. This only happens when the car is warmed up. It does not happen when the car is just started or cold.

A:  Valve guides or seals are loose...... try the seals first as you can change them on the car... guides need the cylinder heads rebuilt to fix... Ed

Q:  The alternator belt won't line up with the other pullies. It seems to be a 1/4 inch off no matter which crank or water pump pulley is used. This is a 403 olds with air (removed) and p/s. Need to know order of belts on the pullies and what possible remedies I am overlooking. I just purchased the car -- engine runs perfectly. Thanx
