Engine Tuning When accelerating Always

Q:  The engine bucks on acceleration.

A:  Poor fuel mixture setting, or wires / plugs / cap / rotor / fuel quality / carbon / plugged injectors / vacuum leaks? If you provide me with more information I can get closer. Ed

Brake System Malfunction When braking When cold

Q:  I will be going downhill and press on the brakes. The brakes seize up. By" seizing up" I mean that when I press on the brake pedal, the pedal will not depress as it normally does: instead of going down, say 2 inches, the pedal will resist at 1 inch, or thereabout. The brakes still work, and if I let go of the pedal and subsequently push on it, the seizing does not occur. This condition is not dependent on climatic conditions, but typically occurs after having started a cold car and having driven it for 1-2 minutes. It occurs about once or twice a month.

Thanks

A:  It's nothing to worry about. Richie

Ignition System Malfunction Happens always Always

Q:  The car's cutting out. It sounds like it's running on 3 of it's 4 cylinders. When I pulled the direction ignition module, it looks like one of the rubber gaumets is torn. Could this be the problem? I checked with a SAAB dealer here, and a new ignition module, with a wire harness adapter is about $600. There's a used one in town for $175. But, I've been told that a lot of the used ones are not servicable, or only last a short while (like the one that I already have on the car). I would like to know if you think that's the problem with the car? And whether or not it's worth taking the gamble of buying the used part? Thanks

A:  For this kind of money, I would have it hooked up to a top quality scope with a 4 or 5 gas exhaust analizer.... Help me pinpoint why and which cylinder is miss firing...... Ed

Electrical / Lighting Systems Malfunction Happens sometimes Not applicable

Q:  The various electrical functions on my '92 saab 9000 (high beams, door locks, brake lights, info lights, etc.) don't work at various times and then do at others. I have checked all the fuses they're o.k. --- just seems like there's a poltergeist in there. Anything I can do to avoid spending lots of $$$ having this fixed???

A:  Saab 900's ran their grounds through the multi-connectors attaching to the various assemblys. The connectors would corrode and weird things would happen. The simple fix would be to externally ground the faulty assembly. Saab probably used the same connectors in both lines, so I suspect 9000's had the same problems. I grounded the tail light assemblies to fix an erratic turn signal / brake light / parking light problem.

Drive Train / Driveline Malfunction Not applicable Always

Q:  My car has reverse only.... no forward drive. Any easy fix or simple things to look for? Also, to remove the transaxle, must I pull the motor? Thanks.

A:  Have someone shift through all gears while you watch the linkage..... If the linkage works all the way into the transaxle, yes the problem is internal.... Either a shift fork or possibly a pin on the shift rod...... I believe the fast way is engine out...... Ed

Exhaust System Malfunction Happens always Always

Q:  Cracked exhaust manifold @ center bolt at front of engine (9000 turbo). The turbo is functioning - boiling or burning all water.

Nothing is leaking - no water in oil - no oil in water - all hoses and connections are original - need to replace - what else?

Do I replace the head gasket too? I did cook the engine a bit. It's been about 100 degrees, too - The oil looks good, though. The fans are fine.

HELP!!! I have no owner's manual, or Chilton book (yet), but I'm too poor to pay for SAAB parts AND labor (who's not?)

A:  If I understand correctly..... the car is using water?????......

Drive Train / Driveline Upgrade Not applicable Not applicable

Q:  I found a '91 SAAB 9000s and would like to know how compatible it is with my '87 SAAB. The '91 has a 2.3L non-turbo, and the '87 is a 2.0 turbo. The '87 is a 5 speed, while the '91 is automatic. I would like to know if the engines, or any parts on them, are compatible, etc. Thanks. Please email thomas2@northnet.org.

A:  Not sure what you are up to....... however if the parts supply car is complete, then a lot of time and effort is all that is required.... That, and a good wiring diagram for each car..... Ed

Drive Train / Driveline Malfunction Happens always Always

Q:  Recently this car has begun popping out of reverse unless power is applied very gently. A linkage bushing replacement solved a forward gear prob. Any chance this can be rectified externally?

A:  Possible shifter mis-adjusted. Try that first. Ed
