Q:  Want to disable the passenger side airbag to allow kid to travel in front. I wanted to cut the wire and then label it so that it could be reconnected if needed. Can you tell me where the wiring is for that? Or give me a hint where to look - or where to look it up? Thanks.

A:  Laura......"DO NOT CUT THE WIRE"....... This will usually trigger the bag to deploy. Most of the new cars have a switch but I am not sure on yours. Please check with your dealer for this information and have them work on it. People are getting killed playing with their air bag systems. Ed

Fuel System Other Happens always Always

Q:  I was told that Subaru's are very sensitive to fuel filter clogs and that only factory filters are acceptable compared to aftermarket brands. This was from a non-Subaru parts dealer not the dealer, so, I was inclined to believe him, what do you think? Thanks BOB

A:  I haven't run into this problem, and I've used most of the aftermarket brands.... Ed

Q:  Looking for radio wiring diagrams for a subaru legacy wagon 1995. Any help in this area would be grewtly apprceciated!!

A:  Check with a local car stereo place if all you need is the color codes for the left / right / front / back etc. They may charge a fee but they do this all the time if they install stereos so they should have the info GOOD LUCK

Engine Vibration When stopped When warm

Q:  The rpm's go up to 900 rpm when braking and when you stop. What should I look at to fix this?

A:  The idle control system has a problem. It's not adjusting quickly enough when you use some of the engine vaccuum for the power brakes... Check the computer controlled idle system ....Ed

Chassis / Suspension & Steering Other Happens sometimes Always

Q:  Pneumatic suspension height adjustment sometimes works and sometimes does not.

Also, sometimes just the back is lifted (sometimes just left or right side).

The height adjustment switch light occasionally flickers (as opposed to blinking, when the height adjustment is being turned on). Even when the height adjustment switch is turned off.

Also, sometimes the ride is very 'bouncy' as if the shock absorbers aren't working.

This seems to coincide with the flickering height adjustment light.

A:  You need to source the diagnostic info(local library) and follow instructions carefully. Ed

Q:  What type of lube is used in the automatic seatbelt mechanism where the cable is wound up? It resembles vaseline in color and texture but does not smell like vaseline and doesn't sink into the skin the way vaseline would.

A:  I could be wrong but it is probably white lithium grease or a silicone based grease.

Engine Making Noise When accelerating Always

Q:  It knocks and pings when accelerating. Took it to the dealer.... all he asks is whether the check angine light came on (no). Car has 110,000 miles, a recent tune-up and fuel filter. Dealer says it has a knock sensor and that it is working if light did not come on. He plugged computer to it but it showed no faults. He recommended premium gas; it helps a little but it hasn't solved it.

A:  Is the timing set correctly? Ed

Electrical / Lighting Systems Malfunction When driving Always

Q:  It is an automatic with all wheel drive, it shifts ok from 1st to 2nd and reverse, but no 3rd or 4th.

A:  That is one expensive job. Be prepared to buy a set of planets and a banner kit. Not a easy transmission to rebuild.

Electrical / Lighting Systems Malfunction Not applicable Not applicable

Q:  My back and front running lights will not turn off.

Normally, none of my lights will function when the car is turned off. Yesterday, however, my running lights continued to stay lit after both the car and the light controls were turned off.

I tried starting and shutting off the car and turning other lights on and off but the front and rear running lights would not go out. The only way to get them off was to disconnedt the fuse.

I don't know if this is relevent but last week I replaced a brake light bulb. The brake lights still work fine and they are not on the same fuse as the running lights.

A:  If your '91 is the same as my '93, it is possible that you inadvertently turned on the "parking" lights. The rocker switch is located atop the steering wheel assembly. It is sorta difficult to tell whether it is "on" or "off," but I'd check that first. Everything else is, as you said, turned off with the ignition switch (via relays located behind the battery). It is possible that you have a stuck relay. You can (I believe) unplug each relay individually. Give that a shot also. Beyond that I'd recommend purchasing a Chilton's for your model year. They usually have fairly good wiring diagrams and troubleshooting info. Good luck!

Chassis / Suspension & Steering Malfunction Happens always Always

Q:  I notice the rear left wheel is not at the correct angle on my UK spec 2.2GX vehicle. The suspension is coil springs over dampers without gas suspension.

The car has been inspected for tracking and geometry checks. I suspect that the coil sping or damper is defective?

I recently removed this assembly and noticed that the unit differs from the unit fitted to the rear right of the car.

The rear right was replaced in 1997 before I purchased the vehicle, the left appears to be original.

From checking it appears that the two springs are different.

Can you please advise whether this would cause the rear left wheel to be at an angle.

Thanks

Andy Dow (UK)

A:  If the right rear was at a different ride height than the left.... yes the left side has to compensate.... maybe find a matched set for the rear.... Ed
