All Part Groups Making Noise Happens always Always
Q: My truck has been making a throaty sound when I am slowing down or when the engine is slowing. I have located the noise coming from the air cleaner. I took it apart and see nothing wrong. The sound almost sounds like an exhaust leak but it is definitely in the air intake.
A: It is called the Air Divertor Valve. Part of the emissions system. Sometimes called the "Gulp Valve". Ed
Q: My speedometer and mileage just started fluctuating and then stopping all together, but then it will kick back up to about 40 mph and then drop to zero again.
A: One of two problems... first there might be a barb where the speedo cable has frayed in turn is causing the speedo cable to bind up. To fix it replace the speedo cable from the back of the speedo to the transmission. Second the speedo gear in the transmission could possibly have a missing tooth or two. I would lean towards the first of the two.

Q: My speedometer works intermittantly. The dealer says it could be a cable or a speed sensor. I need to know which one it is as there are no returns on the sensor. The mechanic down the street can't find a cable, but the service department says there is one. Is there a speedometer cable on the 1993 pickup with a 22RE 4 cyl engine, automatic?
A: I don't believe there is. Just look on your transmission. It could also be the speedometer itself.
Q: it seems that it is a fuel problem. i live in wyoming and going up steep hills it seems to not get enough gas. could this be a fuel filter problem, and if so where is it located so i can see if it's plugged
A: Check under chassis and look for metal canister and 2 metal or rubber fuel lines going to it.Be carefull Fuel line under pressure.
Q: About a week ago I was driving down the road and my oil pump stop working and my engine was making a knocking noise so I took my truck home and put a new oil pump on and look at my rod bearing and I saw nothing wrong with them. So I crank up the engine and its still making a knocking sound. What could be causing this noise?
A: Main bearings/piston pin/broken piston/timing chain etc.

Q: I am trying to hook up a braking switch for the camper and need to find the brake switch so I can hook it to the wire. Where is it? Do you know where I can find a diagram if possible? thanks
A: Most of the time brake switches can be found actually connected to the brake pedal arm.
It should be a pbno switch (push button normally open), with either 2 or 3 wires coming out somewhere along the arm where it pivots, hope this helps.
Ignition System Won't Start Happens sometimes Always
Q: I HAVE TO PUSH THE CLUTCH HARD AND TURN
THE IGNITION KEY ABOUT 3 TO 4 TIMES BEFORE THE CAR GETTING START(BEFORE THE CAR GETTING START I HEAR "CLICK, CLICK" BUT NO SOUND OF ENGINE). IT'S NO MATTER HOT OR COLD DAY I ALWAYS HAVE THIS PROBLEM.
BY THE WAY I HAVE REALLY NEW BATTERY JUST BOUGHT A MONTH AGO AND ALSO NEW SPARK PLUGS.
A: Down by your clutch pedal actually behind it is a small pad with a switch mounted to it i
believeits adjustable adjust it towards the clutch or replace if necessary.
Also could be strater solenoid if it's hard to start even in Neutral.

Q: 4x2 pickup, manual 5spd tran and get a rubbing type noise thats not related to brakes and is there when I coast in neutral. There is no noise when I go in reverse and coast backward in neutral. It's worse in cold weather.
Speedomter cable-how can I re-grease it from the transmission?
A: I had a similar noise in my four runner, i was ready to change the rear bearings. but found my problem to be a rear universal. even though it was tight this was my problem. hope you get it fixed.

Q: Battery discharges after driving several hours.
Recently replaced the alternator which fixed a battery and a transmission oil temp light.
Bought vehicle 1 week ago and drove it 7 hours back with no problem.
It has an aftermarket alarm system, a cd changer, and radar detector installed. I removed some of the unnecessary wiring (ie both ends disconnected.)
What next? Thanks.
A: If the problem is after driving for several hours, then the charging system is not keeping up with the demands....
Check charging system with EVERYTHING turned on at the same time and at 2000 rpm.... should be in the positive or find out why.... Ed

Q: First had wear in spark plug cable, grounded itself causing miss. So, I changed spark wires, and got a new distributor cap.
It ran well for about two days.... until battery went dead. So, I replaced the alternator and put a new battery in.
3 days later, the new battery died. It's now been sitting for few weeks.
Any suggestions before I send it to the shop?
A: Could be the new alternator or the new battery at fault..... If you have testing equipment, check this first....
If not, the shop is the fast way out of the problem..... Ed
Q: I have recently bought a 1988 Toyota Truck.
I have already put alot of work and money into it. It has had many electrical problems. I put
a new alternator in it. The problem now is that
it has no power. Help!!!! I am at my wits end.
The truck starts, but it has no get up and go.
What do you think the problem might be? Thank you for any suggestions.
A: The fuel must be metered corectly for power. Enough but not to much. Check the timing first and the carb system second. Ed

Q: engine symbol on dash gauge lights up while driving.
A: Can you get it to come on when you are just sitting? If I would turn off the car then open the hood there should be a round yellow connector that is just plugged into a rubber sleave attached to the side of the engine compartment, (on the drivers side) there are two on my 86 4runner, the one with 2 holes, jump those two contacts and turn the key on, the check engine will flash a number of times then look up the code. I hope that helps
Q: new problem with over heating. following over heating episodes, fluid check shows loss of fluid despite refilling fluid levels. All hoses intact; no evident leak in radiator. Replaced thermostat; continues to over heat. No unusual engine sounds; running with heater on to keep cooled down. engine has approx 85,000 miles on rebuilt engine; runs well. Left yesterday for cross country trip; currently "stuck" in Tennesse. E-mail courtesy of mom. Any Suggestions? Please respond ASAP. Thanks, Mike
A: try the radiator cap. I had the same promblem with my mustang.

Q: WHEN THE CAR IS RUNNING MY AMOLIFIERS TO MY STERO CUT OFF AFTER 5 SECONDS, YET WHEN THE CAR IS IN THE ON POTION IT WERKS FINE CAN IT BE THE VOLTAGE REGULATOR?
A: sounds more like an overworked circuit breaker. Was the amp installed at a reputable stereo shop? Check the circuit breaker that the amp is running from and see how many amperes it's rated at. Then see how many other gizmos are running off the same breaker. It may be wise to run a new line and breaker off your fuse box. Just look in the fuse box and you'll almost always find an empty slot you can pirate.
Q: Truck ran very hot, then stopped running. left on road for a few days, water pump shot. New water pump, engine turns freely, but won't start.
A: Try a few drops of oil in each cyclinder and start it....
If it doesn't start, do a compression test and then make your judgement call....
You need a minimum of about 90 psi to start an engine..... Ed
Q: 22R engine. Truck will not start. Have changed ignition coil, pick-up coil, rotor and distributor cap, fuses regulator. There is an arc from coil to distributor wire when grounded only when switch is turned off. No arc when cranking.
A: First make sure there are 12 volts of power to the distributer during cranking...... Ed
Q: I recently put a carb kit in my 79 toyota pickup, this truck is mint and now I can't get it to idle! I tried everything including: plugs, wires, cap and rotor, coil and new air filter. I checked for vacuum leaks and for air leaks(none). please help.
A: Back to the rebuild kit diagram and undo the problem you have built into the carb. Ed
