All Part Groups Malfunction When driving Always

Q:  My speedometer and mileage just started fluctuating and then stopping all together, but then it will kick back up to about 40 mph and then drop to zero again.

A:  One of two problems... first there might be a barb where the speedo cable has frayed in turn is causing the speedo cable to bind up. To fix it replace the speedo cable from the back of the speedo to the transmission. Second the speedo gear in the transmission could possibly have a missing tooth or two. I would lean towards the first of the two.

Q:  My speedometer works intermittantly. The dealer says it could be a cable or a speed sensor. I need to know which one it is as there are no returns on the sensor. The mechanic down the street can't find a cable, but the service department says there is one. Is there a speedometer cable on the 1993 pickup with a 22RE 4 cyl engine, automatic?

A:  I don't believe there is. Just look on your transmission. It could also be the speedometer itself.

Q:  I am trying to hook up a braking switch for the camper and need to find the brake switch so I can hook it to the wire. Where is it? Do you know where I can find a diagram if possible? thanks

A:  Most of the time brake switches can be found actually connected to the brake pedal arm. It should be a pbno switch (push button normally open), with either 2 or 3 wires coming out somewhere along the arm where it pivots, hope this helps.

Q:  Battery discharges after driving several hours. Recently replaced the alternator which fixed a battery and a transmission oil temp light. Bought vehicle 1 week ago and drove it 7 hours back with no problem. It has an aftermarket alarm system, a cd changer, and radar detector installed. I removed some of the unnecessary wiring (ie both ends disconnected.) What next? Thanks.

So, I replaced the alternator and put a new battery in. 3 days later, the new battery died. It's now been sitting for few weeks. Any suggestions before I send it to the shop?

Q:  engine symbol on dash gauge lights up while driving.

A:  Can you get it to come on when you are just sitting? If I would turn off the car then open the hood there should be a round yellow connector that is just plugged into a rubber sleave attached to the side of the engine compartment, (on the drivers side) there are two on my 86 4runner, the one with 2 holes, jump those two contacts and turn the key on, the check engine will flash a number of times then look up the code. I hope that helps

Q:  WHEN THE CAR IS RUNNING MY AMOLIFIERS TO MY STERO CUT OFF AFTER 5 SECONDS, YET WHEN THE CAR IS IN THE ON POTION IT WERKS FINE CAN IT BE THE VOLTAGE REGULATOR?

A:  sounds more like an overworked circuit breaker. Was the amp installed at a reputable stereo shop? Check the circuit breaker that the amp is running from and see how many amperes it's rated at. Then see how many other gizmos are running off the same breaker. It may be wise to run a new line and breaker off your fuse box. Just look in the fuse box and you'll almost always find an empty slot you can pirate.

Engine Other When driving Always

Q:  I am having a problem with backfiring. I had the timing adjusted but this did little to fix the problem. What else may be wrong that I can check (or get checked)?

A:  Backfiring when slowing down is different than when speeding up (acceleration).....

These vehicles have a deceleration backfire problem because of something we call a "gulp" valve.....

It is part of the emmision system and when engine vaccuum is high (deceleration), it allows a 'little' air into the exhaust to promote after burn...

If too much air gets in, or the carb bleeds extra fuel, the repeated explosions (backfires) you hear are from the reignition of fuel in the exhaust.....
