2002 Acura Integra Ignition System

New User Asked -
took battery out for 3 days to change the clutch and now it will turn over but won't start like it has no ignition It has inmobile security system on I was wondering if that is my problem

Roger -
Hello, When you turn the ignition key on what does the Immobilizer System Indicator on the instrument cluster do?

Proper response for a programmed key is for the light to come on for two seconds and go off.

When you turn the key off the light should blink for five seconds and go off.

Please advise,

Roger

New User -
the key light does that so, I guess that's not the problem than. what else can it be?

Roger -
Are you confident that any wire disconnected during the work done has been reconected?

Have you checked for spark while cranking? Do you have fuel pressure?

Roger

New User -
I'm confident on the connections there is only three on top of the transmisson. U can hear the fuel pump when you turn the key on. I haven't check for spark yet.

Roger -
We need to confirm spark. Hearing the fuel pump run is encouraging but the pressure must be good and the injectors must fire also.

If there is no spark there may not be injector pulse either.

Roger

New User -
what is the easiest way to do this?

Roger -
The easiest way I know of is to unplug a spark plug wire from a spark plug and place the end of the wire on a metal surface.

Do not try to hold the wire and aim it at metal. It will shock you.

Crank the engine and see if you see spark jump from the wire to the metal surface.

Please advise,

Roger

New User -
Took a plug out and it has spark. But no sure on gas the plug looked dry. How do we test for fuel?

Roger -
Each fuel injector has an electrical connector with two wires in it. Unplug any one of the injectors you can access easily.

One of the two wires will have voltage when the key is on. The other will not. Connect a DC volt meter between the two wires. It should read zero volts. When you crank the engine there should be a voltage pulse. The computer supplies the ground for the circuit in very short time pulses.

Roger

New User -
If i did it right the number goes up and down when you are crank it? what does this mean? Ken

Roger -
We need to know what the fuel pressure is. You have spark and the injectors are pulsing so that takes our attention to the fuel supply.

Do you have a shot of starting fluid you could spray into the air intake? If so and the engine starts and runs until the starting fluid runs out you can believe there is a fuel pressure issue.

Could be a restriction such as a fuel filter or a fuel pump that doesn't work right.

Roger

New User -
This is what I did today so, Far has spark and the plugs are getting gas I disconnected the injectors and turn the engine to try to get the gas out. Put in plugs and nothing happens the plug are soak with gas. I have pulse in the injectors and spark and gas it should of started.. There was only 3 wires to disconnect they were on top of the transmisson I think one of the is temp sensor and the other one is for the throttle I don't know what the other on the back of the motor is for? It has a timing chain. I turn the motor over by the belt by hand to tighten the pressure plate so i could get to all the bolts easier could it have jump timing?

Roger -
We've talked about the engine cranks but the plugs are dry. Now it cranks and the plugs are wet.

Do you have compressed air? I would want to remove the spark plugs and clean the electrodes with brake parts cleaner, then blow dry with compressed air. If you have access I'd blow compressed air in the cylinders via the spark plug hole to help dry them.

Then I'd like to try putting it back together, hold the throttle on the floor and try to start the engine again.

If that didn't work...if there is a MAP Sensor I'd disconnect it and try again to start the engine.

I would not be thinking the engine has jumped time. Don't see how it could have. A compression test would be needed to address a timing issue if it comes to that.

Roger

New User -
well earlier I did a compressor test all around 140 timing belt should be good. I tried what you said no good. I took the plug out and clean them. Un hooked injectors turn the motor over and clean the plugs again. I did that three times until the plugs were dry. Put them in and hooked up the injector and unplug mass sensor and turned it over nothing took plugs back out dripping gas off on them. The motor keeps getting flooded fast.

Roger -
Let's get the input from others. I'll release the question so they can try to help you.

Thanks,

Roger

Hello
Look at the Mass Airflow System next to the air cleaner (you will have to take it apart) see if the sensor is still connected it will be a thin sheet of metal about 1/4 inch to 1/2 long in the center. They are fragile it may have been damaged will working on the tranny.
Heavychevy

heavychevy -

heavychevy -
.

New User -
Hello, what make you think it is the air mass. That is no where near the tranny? HOw could that get damaged?

heavychevy -
Did you take the air breather and duct work off to get to the tranny to change the clucth? Its not near the tranny no but should be right above it. They are pretty fragile.
Heavychevy

heavychevy -
disconnect it (MAP sensor) and then try to start it.

New User -
doesn't make a difference on the mass sensor

New User -
I'm sorry mapp sensor I mean.

heavychevy -
Have you checked all the fuses?
Disconnect battery again and then reconnect than try to start it.

New User -
I checked all the fuse under the hood and under the dash. I disconnected the battery and tried again. I don't understand I drop the sub frame and unhooked the three sensor on top of the tranny unbolted put a new clutch in bolted up the guy that owns the car finished the rest while I was gone for the weekend. He said it won't start So I can home and Now trying to figure out why it won't start..

heavychevy -
I would check all connections thats about all I can tell you.

heavychevy -
..

heavychevy -
,,

New User -
The answer to this question was that the timing chain jumped and installing new chain and ect. thanks

heavychevy -
Never heard a timing jump while clutch being changed.

heavychevy -
Never heard of timing jump while clutch being changed.

New User -
It must of jumped timing when he turn engine over by hand using the front belt to tight pressure plate bolts. Must of turn it backwards

heavychevy -
did something to it Sounds like it was getting ready to go anyway if thats all it took.

New User Asked -
My clutch seems very squishy when I first start my car, goes all the way to the floor with minimal resistance and is difficult if not impossible to get into gear when it has been first started. When I turn the car off the gears are able to engage normally. Also, after the car has been driven for 10-20 min the clutch seems to have normal resistance and shifts gears easily. I have missed my major service for 100,000 miles. I am wondering if the fluids need to be bled and topped off, if the clutch is going, or perhaps even the transmission? There are no unusual noises, or smells that I can detect. Thank you!

Bruce Kit -
A 'squishy' clutch as you described it, is a sign of air in the clutch hydraulic system.
At 100,000 miles, you should have the clutch looked at.
The fluid should be easy to top up.
If fluid is a little low, thats ok as it is expected to go down as the clutch wears. If the fluid is very low, then look for a leak.
If fluid is dirty, it should be flushed.
If it is the origional clutch, it is probably due.FYI: If the clutch is to be replaced, have the tech replace the engine rear seal. Replacing it with clutch out, is a minimal thing. Replacing the seal later, will cost hundreds of dollars.
Do not feel obligated to go to an Acura dealer, as any competent auto repair shop can look at the clutch assy, and give you an honest assesment.

2000 Acura Integra Fuel System

duran816 Asked -
I have a 1988 Honda CRX with a 2000 Acura Integra GSR swap. After a drive, if I turn the car off for about 10 mins or more, the car will not re-start.
I turn the key on over and over but all I can hear is the fuel pump come on, the car starts then sputters off in a second or two.
Finally, after about 10-15 mins of this, I can hear a "Fffffump!"
Then, the car will start and run fine!!!
What the heck is that? I replaced the main relay, and the fuel pump, already, to no avail.
It's like there is a little flap that suddenly closes shut and then allows the fuel to flow, if that Ffffump don't happen, it won't start.
Please advise.

ED

Sterlingfixer -
I suggest you check the ground circuit for the main relay. A loose bolt or connection can give such problems. The quality of the engine swap could have a lot to do with troubleshooting problems now.

1998 Acura Integra All Part Groups Won't Start

New User Asked -
I have a 98 acura integra ls with automatic tranny, the srs light is on, and the horn and cruise control dont work. I was told that the clockspring was the cause of this so i had it replaced with a new one. this did nothing to fix the problem. any ideas what it is? ALSO, (need this info ASAP)"car wont start"> I just bought the car and i live in Texas, were you have to pass an inspection to get lisenced, one of the qualifications is the horn has to work. So i ran a switch from the interior to the horn. I wired it from the battery to the switch to an inline(10a)fuse to the horn. i didnt mess with any of the cars electrical components other than i unplugged the connector to the horn to alligator clip the wire to the horn, and I also unplugged the dash mount cruise control button tho try to mount the horn there but that didnt work so i plugged it back in. So then i attached the wire directly to the positive on the battery and, whala! the horn worked, so i was going to go get the car inspected and tried to start it up, I turned the key over to 2, all the electrical components went on, i could hear the fuel pump run, i turned it over to start and, NOTHING, not even a click. i have no idea what happened or what to do, i didnt hear any fuses blowing while installing the horn, and i live in a quiet area. I really need to get this thing started, its my only trans! PLEASE HELP

Douglas -
You will need to check fuses and the battery connections, make sure you did not leave a wire off or have one break.

Also apply the brake and try shifting to neutral to see if it'll start here. If you have to press the brake before the engine will start, make sure the brake switch did not get knocked out of place (do the brake lights come on).

1998 Acura Integra Windows / Glass

New User Asked -
need to replace the window motor on passangers side. Door panel is off, pastic cover is out of the way, how to I gain access the window motor from here.

Roger -
Hello, Peel off channel guide cover, then remove three screws. Remove center channel guide by pulling upward. Raise glass to access window glass guide bolts. Remove bolts and slide guide to rear.

Remove glass from guide. DO NOT drop glass inside door. Carefully pull glass out through window slot. Check guide pin for damage or wear. Replace as necessary. To replace guide pin, scribe a line with a marker pin around guide pin to mark original location.

Disconnect switch connector. Using a marker pen, mark a location around rear roller guide bolts. Remove six regulator bolts. Remove regulator assembly through center hole in door.

Before removing power window motor, mark location of sector gear and regulator for reassembly. Remove power window motor from regulator.

To install, reverse removal procedure. Grease power window motor gear and all sliding surfaces of regulator.

1996 Acura Integra Electrical / Lighting Systems Malfunction Happens always Always

New User Asked -
My spoiler brake light stays on all the time; even when all other brakes lights are off.

Roger -
The brake lights on the body and the one in the spoiler are supposed to have seperate power feeds from the brake light switch. The switch could be out of ajustment, or the brake light switch may be defective as in "shorted to voltage."

Do your brake lights on the body work properly? Is that a factory installed or an aftermarket spoiler? Can you locate the brake light switch on a bracket in front of the brake pedal arm? Does the brake pedal arm fully actuate the switch button travel inward when the brake pedal is at rest? Will just lifting up on the brake pedal turn the spoiler brake light Off?

Please advise,

Roger

New User -
I will check your recommendations tomorrow. The spoiler was factory installed.

New User -
The other brake lights do work properly.

Roger -
Great, meanwhile I'll round up a wiring diagram in case we need it.

Thanks,

Roger

Roger -
I can't help but wonder if the wiring for the spoiler brake light has become pinched by the operation of the trunk hinges or routed so as to allow chafing on a metal edge. Please consider this possibility, too.

Roger

Roger -
To clarify which wiring diagram to use... will you please advise what body style/series your car is? Sedan, GSR, Hatchback?

Thanks,

Roger

New User -
OK, it's a 1996 Acura Integra Gs-R Hatchback 2DR
1.8 L
Does that help?

New User -
The possibility of the connection being pinched is one I hadn't thought of, but I looked and didn't see any problems. The hatch interior panel has not been removed or opened since it was bought from the factory that I know of.

Roger -
The Hatchback shows to have brake lights and horn powered by the underhood Fuse/Relay Box, Fuse #42, (20 amp). We're okay there.

Fuse #42 powers the brake light switch via a White/Green wire. This wire will connect to the brake light switch at terminal #2 if you have cruise control or, terminal #1 if you do not have cruise.

When the brake light switch is "ON", power should leave the switch via a Green/White wire at terminal #3 if you have cruise or, terminal #2 if you do not have cruise.

There does not appear to be seperate switched power supply wire circuits to the spoiler light vs. the brake lights on the body.

The spoiler light assembly has a diode in-line. If the diode is bad, voltage could backfeed from the ground wire side.

I would check the brake light switch output terminal Green/White wire for voltage present when brakes are not applied. Use a high impedence dc volt meter for this please, a 12 volt test light could fool us here. If no voltage is detected, next I'd disconnect the spoiler light wiring connector (at the light) and check the car's wiring Green/White wire for transient voltage. With the light disconnected, you'll be able to test the diode in the light. If the diode is bad, replace the light.

If transient voltage is found look first for a fuse blown on any system in any fuse or relay panel inside or under the hood of the car. If fuses are good you'll next need to trace the car's spoiler light wiring harness back through the car to find the source of the short to voltage (pinched wiring, chafed wire, screw run through the harness).

Your thoughts?,

Roger

Dear Mechanic, I have 94 Integra 4 door sedan and the drivers door is stuck shut. It looks like the linkage has come off the latch assy. In short we tried slimjims, screwdrivers, Etc...unsuccessfully. Any info on how to get it open would be greatly appreciated. Thank You. David Bass dafishB@peoplepc.com

encsisme -
This is not a fun job because there is no room to work. First take the drivers seat and slide it all the way back and lay it all the way down. This will give you some room to work. Remove the door handle and the window crank (if your car has manual windows) the inner door skin will then only have plastic retainers that can pop out with a butter knife or large flat tip screwdriver. Remove the inner skin and you will (probably) find a layer of sheet plastic this is for noise dampening and can be peeled away. Once you are at this point you should be able to reach into one of the access holes and reconnect the door linkages and open the door. Repair the broken parts and reassembly is reverse of disassembly. This will probably take about 1 to 2 hours because of lack of space and room to work.. good luck. AL

1994 Acura Integra Fuel System Malfunction When starting When warm

New User Asked -
how do you install a new stock fuel pump?

kaptnzog -
The pump should be located inside the fuel tank.I'm not quite sure on your model, but some have an inspection plate inside the trunk that can be removed to gain access.Remove the spare tire and pull up the carpeting to see if it does.If it does,it should be up behind the rear seat, otherwise, the tank needs to be drained and then dropped to get to the top of the tank where it is located. This method, you will have to disconnect gas lines and fuel filler hoses. Not a real easy task but it is doable with the right tools.

1994 Acura Integra Engine  When coasting Always

New User Asked -
ok so when i'm driving and take my foot of the gas and coast the idle will fluctuate all the time between 1500 then it will drop to 1000 then back to 1500 only in the rpm range though

New User -
i tried to take it to a place to get checked out but the omputer in my car didn't put out any codes

Sterlingfixer -
Your car is having a problem with the idle speed. Most common causes of this idle surge is bad idle control valve, bad coolant temperature sensor, vacuum leaks allowing excess air into the engine, fast idle valve stuck open or coolant passage clogged.

New User -
so what can i do to fix it, what should i check first

Sterlingfixer -
First, unplug your electronic idle control valve. It should stall, or almost stall. If not, you are still getting too much air. Look at the idle air screw on the throttle body, screw it in to reduce idle air bypass flow. If it is still running above 700RPM, there is still air leaking in. Remove the air intake boot and use your finger to plug the air bypass passage while the engine is running. If the car now slows down or stalls, then you will need to replace the fast idle valve. If it does not slow down, then you will need to find the vacuum leak elsewhere. Check the brake booster, intake gasket and all vacuum lines.

1994 Acura Integra Drive Train / Driveline Failing

New User Asked -
Hi,

This is my problem. A few months ago I saw the ABS light turn on, on the vehicle and then hang out for maybe a week and since then it's been off. Then in the last week, the clutch has been having a hard time engaging, and soon after I noticed that the brakes were also feeling strange. The brakes now need to be pushed a lot further down to engage as well. Today I get to the car and try to turn it on and the clutch pushed all the way to the wall with less resistance wouldn't engage so my car wouldn't turn on. Now, does this mean that... A.) The clutch is dead? (I haven't noticed the normal slipping associated with clutches going out, I mean, maybe ever so slightly and rarely but nothing to indicate that it was almost dead) ... B.) The brake fluid is very low and simply needs to be filled (i know I should have already checked this but I had to get to work in a hurry so I haven't been back home yet and I got an emergency ride to work) ... C.) i need to bleed and fill the system? ... another question... does the brake fluid for the vehicles braking system filled the clutch on this vehicle as well as most cars or does it have a separate reservoir?

Douglas -
You should have seperate reservoirs for the clutch and brakes. You may have a leak in the braking system as well as the clutch system. Check both resorvoirs.

It sounds as if you'll find the clutch res. empty, filling and bleeding will only temporarily (if at all) restore the clutch. The source of the leak must be located and repaired. The same for the brakes, both of which make the car dangerous to drive.

Douglas -
Hello,

I can further assist you on the problem if you tell me what you found so far. If there is something you'd like clarification on simply ask.

New User -
Well, I went to the brake fluid reservoir and saw that it was full yet the liquid looked brown and nasty. I looked in the clutch reservoir and saw that it was almost bone dry. After figuring out where the slave cylinder was. I bled the bleeder nipple to the clutch into a water bottle with a clear tube and had my girlfriend pump the clutch. I kept the reservoir closed and had her pump few times and then hold. I'd close the bleeder and put more liquid in the reservoir. Eventually I noticed that there were lots of pockets of air coming out. When the liquid stopped having air and bubbles and stopped being brown and more clear yellow like the Valvoline Synthetic I used. I stopped and closed it while the clutch was held in. She pumped it a few times. Turn the car on and the car shifts into gear perfectly. I looked at the master and the slave and they appear to be ok with no cracks in the boot either. Apparently, she doesn't remember anyone ever filled the reservoir while she's had it. It's had over 140K miles. Seems a bit much. I change my BMW clutch/brake fluid every year just in case. She said it feels tons more responsive than she remembers and I told her eventually I'll bleed her brakes too. I'm planning to check the clutch reservoir consisently and see if she is losing the fluid quickly and if so, where it is leaking.

Douglas -
If you are lucky it'll have such a small leak that it doesn't matter. The 'junk' in the old fluid can actually seal a leak, on occasion.

The brakes may also be worn. If excessive travel is needed check the front and rear brakes for excessive wear. Be prepared to replace parts if you try to bleed/flush the brakes. The bleeders may break off if they are original.

Good idea to replace the fluid in your own car. Brake, clutch, steering, and coolant need replacing just as well as the engine and trans. lubcricants. Head gasket failure is much more likely on engines when the coolant is never changed.

My electric cooling fans are not turning on. Replaced the thermo sensor no dice. Both fans will start when a/c is turned on but not when off or when the car reaches operating temp. Relay and fuses are good in relay box under hood and in the fuse box inside. The temp gage inside never shows overheating( Needle in middle or lower) Yet I can smell burned or boiling coolant and see steam or smoke. I'm stumped please help.

Roger -
Hello, Where do you see the steam? Is your radiator cap in good condition? It must hold pressure to raise the boiling point of the coolant. The system must be leak free to hold pressure.

You are not seeing an overheat. The car may not call for cooling fans unless the temp. reading is shown to be higher than you are presently seeing.

Cooling fans run when the A/C is on to move air across the condenser and control the pressure on the high side of the A/C system.

Please advise,

Roger

When I turn on the headlights, the driver side light will be dim and it will also light up both high beams but very dim. Also the driver's side turn signal indicator will come on in the dash and the left turn signal will stay on continuously, clicking very rapidly when turned on; however, the hazard lights work just fine. If the windshield wipers are turned on while the headlights are on, they will not turn off until the headlights are turned off. All turn signal, marker lights, and wipers work just fine when the headlights are turned on. All fuses have been checked and are all in working order with no shorts. This all happened after I got the car back from having the A/C compressor and evaporator replaced.

My friend has a 1994 acura integra with 160k miles on it and it runs like crap. I said to use to better and to do a tune up what do you suggest they should do. It is a J car and they should go forever

Bruce Kit -
Fooling around with the alarm switch usually means a poor alarm battery, A tune up with an Accura (or any car) is a good idea. When Hondas and Accuras do not get tuneups and regular maintenance, they usually burn out components in the distributor and the 'tune up' ends up costing $800.The poor starting is also a symptom of requiring a tune up.
Do a major tuneup now, before this happens! They do run a long time if properly maintained and that means timing belt replacement on scheduled intervals.

New User -
Would you have part numbers for the parts that i need so i can either look them up or if you can give me a price on just parts or part numbers on what you suggest thank you very much

Bruce Kit -
Part numbers vary from manufacturer.
Just go to your local parts store and get spark plugs (I prefer NGK's) and a good distributor cap and rotor.A good dist cap has brass or copper terminals, NOT aluminum.
MSD makes good caps/rotors.MSD also makes good plug wires for Accura cars

1992 Acura Integra Ignition System Won't Start Happens sometimes No pattern

New User Asked -
This car has 130,000 miles on it and has an AT. When the gear selector is in "Park" or "N" and the S3 position on the dash display flashes, the motor will turn over but will not start. If the dash display shows the "P" or "N" lit, it always starts. This situation seems to occur when the car has been driven and the engine is hot but it also occurs when it's been sitting overnight.

Douglas -
There were widespread problems with the main relay causing crank/no-start problems (especially hot).

For the S3 light flashing, you'd need diagnostics performed to indicate the fault that is being detected.

kaptnzog -
This one is hard to diagnosis from this side of the screen, but you do say an S3 lights when this condition happens. Vauge guess would be a transmission control module is feeding the Ecm with a false negative. Only way I could confirm this is with a Diagnostic scan. Check with your local parts house and see if they offer this type of sevice.I understand there are some who offer this free or at a nominal charge.
Good Luck,
Paul

It could be a bad or discharged battery if the starter didn't crank over the engine fast enough. Autozone and Advance Auto will test (or charge) your battery free of charge. If you happened to leave the domelight, etc on this may have run your battery down.

New User Asked -
Car not started for about a month...car ran for a couple of blocks then died. Now appears to have no spark. What to do...

Bruce Kit -
Very common with Honds-Accura cars. The module inside the distributor fails.Usually happens when regular tuneups are not done and an excessive load is put on the dist electronics.New spark plugs, cap and rotor are needed and instead of replacing the individual dist parts, I usually put in a replacement distributor, either remanufactured one or used one. As I said , it is not an unusual problem.

New User -
does the module come with a new distributor, or do I need to buy this separately?

Bruce Kit -
Yes the module comes with the distributor, and usually the cap and rotor also.Pick up a set of fresh plugs too, if they have not been changed for awhile.Sorry Re:delay I was out fuelling up the tow truck.

New User -
Thanks. One thing that I forgot to mention is that it is stuck in park--have to use the manual key slot to get it out of park. Could this be related, or is this a separate issue?

Bruce Kit -
Probably a separate issue, but there is a neutral safty switch, in the shifter that disables the start (not'run') circuits. If you have access to a volt ohm meter you could test the switch...

New User -
I have a volt/ohm meter--how should i check it...

Thanks

Bruce Kit -
Remove the switch and determine the ground and power curcuits (you will need a wiring diagram, such as a Haynes one) With the ohm meter connected, move the switch and see if there are any resistance fluctuations.

1992 Acura Integra Ignition System

New User Asked -
Died while driving at highway speeds, will not restart turns over fine, power to the distributor but no spark at the spark plugs. Was told it was the distributor, replaced with a reman still no spark. Possible ECU?

Bruce Kit -
Possibly ECU or main body fuse (dealer item) Also possible you got bad reman dist, it does happen occassionally/.

New User -
Bruce I have checked the ecu 10 amp fuse under the hood and checked out OK now if there is another main fuse my manual does not tell me where to look for it. Also could I try a nown goog ecu out of a Honda Civic of the same year and would the start/run circuit be the same? thanks Tony

Bruce Kit -
I would check all the fuses. No hidden ones. Replacement 'test' ecu not a bad idea. I have a few for that purpose,Try one with same trans as yours (auto/std)

New User -
Bruce it did indeed was ECU, replaced it with a used unit and it started and runs great........

thanks,

Tony

My car has no spark and no fuel beiung pumped. I have replaced the fuel relay and the ignition coil. There is voltage at the ignition coil but still no spark. Theres no voltage going to the fuel pump.

Bruce Kit -
A common (and expensive) problem is the ignition module.
Try bypassing the electronics and directly wiring the fuel pump.On rare cases, its the Computer, but my guess is the ignition module (dist) .
Especially if the last tune up was a long time ago!
Borrowing a scanner and checking for fault codes would be an excellent idea also.
Also ensure the oil level up.Low oil press shuts of fuel supply etc in some cars.

1991 Acura Integra Fuel System Won't Start When starting When warm

New User Asked -
sometimes not always the car floods itself in the afternoon (sitting in the sun) if the car has not been started for the day. other times it will not start after I have gone somewhere stopped return to the car when it is still warn.

Roger -
Hello, The fuel system is supposed to hold fuel pressure when the engine has been shut off for a period of time. If it doesn't, the cause can be a fuel injector is leaking and the result is a flooded condition.

Connecting a fuel pressure gauge to the fuel rail and monitoring fuel pressure will identify if the pressure is bleeding off too quickly. Fuel injectors can be dirty and get stuck on dirt and not close completely. Flushing the injectors can do the trick if the injector doen't have a mechanical problem closing.

There is also a check valve in the fuel system that keeps fuel from bleeding back to the tank, but that would cause a long crank to start problem, not a flooding problem.

There is a coolant temperature sensor that the car's computer monitors to determine how rich the fuel mixture will be when the engine starts. An inaccurate sensor reading can "fool" the computer to call for too much fuel.

That said, see if you can have the fuel pressure leak-down test done and the accuracy of the coolant temp sensor verified. As always, do not pump a fuel injected car's accelerator during start-up.

Your thoughts?,

Roger

1991 Acura Integra Engine Overheating  No pattern

New User Asked -
i have an acura integra, i had just bought it about 6 months ago, it has about 229,000 miles on it and it ran great. recently i was driving it and all of a sudden it started to decelerate and the night lights went off and all engine lights came on. after returning home the car overheated and the oil was low, and the coolant was boiling. the car still overheated after replenishing fluids, so i changed the thermastat, the engine overheates when it wants to and then goes back to cool. i think it might be the water pump or head gasket or somethin in that ball park. what do u think it could be?

Sterlingfixer -
Sounds like it could be a blown head gasket. With the engine cool, open the radiator, start the engine, fill the radiator to the brim and see if there are any air bubbles coming out of the radiator. There should be very few. If there is a steady stream of air bubbles, or if the coolant spouts out, you have blown gasket.

New User Asked -
The timing belt broke. Does this engine type self destruct (i.e. crunch valves) when the timing belt goes or can the timing belt simply be changed? If either, is there any quick check to see whether the engine is salvagable?

Douglas -
The 1.8l engine is listed as an interference engine, so yes it can self destruct. If you are at highway speed there is most likely engine damage. If you were parked or at low engine rpms- the engine may not have suffered damage. There are no quick checks to ensure the engine is okay. You can look into a cylinder with a flashlight or scope, you may be able to see damage indicating a bad engine.

i have an acura integra 91 when the idle gets to around 1000 it shuts off.even when it is around 1500 an i press the gas it is erractic it will jump to about 2000 rpm or whatever number rpm it wants to under 3000 then it will stall.i have replaced my fuel pump, and somebody recently told me it could be my relay, but im stumped.it will stall out and not start sometimes too.i recently turbocharged it and i havnt gotten it tuned yet, it might be running rich, but then again it had this problem before, any help would be much appreciated thanks

Bruce Kit -
Assuming that there is no check engine light, I would look to the fuel delivery system.Check the pressure and the filter.
Also see if tha catalytic converter is plugged or partially plugged.

1991 Acura Integra Electrical / Lighting Systems

New User Asked -
When I turn the ignition to start my car, I hear the normal starting of my fuel pump, then the check engine light will go off, and I can crank the car. However, sometimes when its hot outside, I hear no pump and the light wont go off. I have to resort to shaking the steering wheel and beating the crap out of it to get it to click off and for the car to crank. Imp: WILL NOT START WITH LIGHT ON. Tell me how I can fix this pls.

Roger -
Hello, When you effectively can start the car by beating on the steering column it leads me to believe replacing the ignition electrical switch will correct the problem.

Will you be doing the repair? Do you need instructions, or do you have a repair manual to guide you?

Please advise,

Roger

New User -
Yes i need instructions. Where is that switch? do I need to replace the whole ignition? I already have the cover off of the column just behind the steering wheel.

Roger -
To replace the ignition electrical switch:

Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove switches from lower dashboard panel. Remove lower dashboard panel. Disconnect the ignition switch 7-pin connector from under dash fuse box. Turn ignition switch to "0" position. Remove two screws and ignition switch.

To install, reverse removal procedure.

Roger

Roger -
What happened? The question was released for others to answer. Did you intend to take that action?

If instead you meant to accept my answer please click on OK to finish up.

Please explain,

Roger

New User -
Roger, after doing some more research, i found that it is more likely the PGM-FI relay is causing the problems. You did not even mention this in your answers but gave me only 1 solution. Do you think this could be the cause as well?

Roger -
I based my thoughts on your saying that beating/shaking the steering wheel had positive results.

Had you said that just waiting awhile with the key on the light would finally go off and the fuel pump would run I would have been considering a relay could be the fault.

How can I further assist you?

Roger

New User -
Thats fine Roger. I have found out what it is. You have more than helped. Thnks for the time,

Have you checked to see if the cooling fan is operative? The fan should turn on before the car overheats.

Also, did you check the coolant level after water pump replacement to make sure the level isn't low.

Any smoke from the exhaust?

Douglas -
I forgot to mention the thermostat, I recommend replacing the thermostat whenever you change the water pump.

1990 Acura Integra Engine Overheating When idling When warm

New User Asked -
what should i repair to fix this overheating problem?

Sterlingfixer -
First, make sure the coolant level is full and is not leaking. Fix any leaks.

Next, with the engine cool and the radiator full, remove the radiator cap and start the car. The coolant should not gush out, nor bubbles come out of the radiator. The level should rise slowly as the engine warms. If not OK, then the headgasket is probably no good.

Next, let the car idle and warm up with the radiator cap on. The temperature gage should stay in the middle until the radiator gets hot. If the radiator does not get hot, check the heat inside the car. If the heater is hot and the radiator not, replace the thermostat. If neither are hot, but the engine is, replace the water pump.

If both are hot, the fans should come on before the engine overheats. If not, repair the fan system.

If the fan is running and the engine gets too hot at idle, feel the air from the fan. Make sure it is blowing toward the engine. Make sure it is almost too hot to hold your hand in it. If the air is only warm, the radiator may be clogged.

1990 Acura Integra. Will not start. Replaced starter, Fuel pump, plugs, wires, rotar button, main relay. In the beginning it was hit and miss if it would start or not....finally left me sitting. Sounds as if it is trying to start, but won't. Tried starting in the dark to look for sparks (cracks in distributor cap) nothing.

Roger -
Hello, What engine please? Have you verified no spark?

Roger

New User -
RS dual overhead cam. I do not know if they have established no spark, but it is getting gas I know.

Roger -
Spark must be verified to continue diagnosis.

The first two things a technician will confirm is fuel and spark. You are half way there.

Roger

New User -
I called and spark has been confirmed.

Roger -
Okay, We didn't talk about fuel pressure but you stated the fuel pump is new...was the fuel filter replaced also?

Are the spark plugs getting fuel soaked? They may need cleaning.

Has a compression test been done? This will help to identify a problem with valves and head gaskets.

How old is the timing belt?

Roger

New User -
The fuel filter was replaced. Not sure if plugs are soaked, but they are new.

Could it be starter coil, excuse me if there is no such thing.

Timing belt, I'm not sure how old it is?? How can you tell if it is a bad timing belt? It is not broken.

Roger -
I am not aware of a starter coil on the car.

The compression test will help address a timing belt that may have stretched, jumped a cog, etc.

With spark and fuel present that leaves compression and timing to be in order for the engine to start.

Roger

New User -
How is a compression test performed?

Roger -
Remove all the spark plugs and disable the ignition system.

Install a compression gauge into a spark plug hole. Note the cylinder number you are testing. Turn the ignition key to start and watch the compression gauge until you see four cycles of the piston raise the needle on the gauge. Record the reading.

Repeat this process until you have checked all the cylinders.

Compare the lowest reading to the highest reading. The lowest reading can be no less than 85% of the highest reading.

Roger

New User -
And if it is not the timing belt?

Also, I think the firing part has been confirmed...if it hasn't, given all we have replaced, what else could it be as far as sensors, parts, etc.?? Is there one of those "Electronic Brains" on this car?
I remember having an old Mercury and a Plymouth Horizon that had a similar problem and it turned out to be a little box on the firewall called "The Brain."

Roger -
The car has a computer referred to as the ECM or the PCM that runs the engine based on feedback from various sensors.

If the computer were screwed up you wouldn't have fuel and spark.

Have you been seeing a CHECK ENGINE light or a SERVICE ENGINE SOON light recently while driving?

The advice I have offered is the best I can do at this point. It would be good to know what color the spark is, the fuel pressure reading, and the quality of the fuel.

Roger

Roger -
What is your email address please? I'll send you info on the electronic ignition checks. I have eight pages for you to sort through on just the ignition.

Thanks,

Roger

Roger -
I have a thought...

If when you attempt to start the car does it seem to be running only to die when you release the key to the on position? Do the dash warning lights go out also? Do the dash warning lights light up when you turn the key on?

I have a Honda here that won't run unless I hold the key between on and start. When I start it I must rotate the key back from start only enough to allow the starter to disengage. While holding the key halfway between start and run the engine runs fine.

This one will get an ignition electrical switch to repair.

Does your car act like this one??

Roger

New User -
I'm not sure about that??? I'll have to ask my son. It is his car. My email address is [redacted]

Roger -
Thank you for the email address. I'll scan eight pages and send them along.

I swapped a 99 JDM ITR engine into my 90 Integra. I could not use the DC2 power steering pump because it was not compatible with the DA6 power steering hose so I retained the DA6 PS pump. It works well except that 2 DA pumps developed leaks at the pulley in less than a year. Can I replace the DA6 PS hose with a DC2 one so that I can use a DC2 PS pump? Will the DC2 PS hose bolt up on the steering rack and pinion of the DA6?

heavychevy -
Thats a pretty difficult question. I suggest comparing the two making sure of thread count and size. Most places will carry fitting that you can purchase to convert it if they dont match up. When you get the fitting make sure you bring both hoses with you to insure you get the ones.
Heavychevy

New User -
You have not answered my question.

macconeck -
Yes you can use the 2da pump these hoses are interchagable and it will be a matter of changing the fitting at the end of the power steering pump.
Depending on what brand of hose you buy the theads a fitting may or may not be neccesary.
these hoses are used on other systems also that is why it is best to bring the old hose in to purchase the part and if neccessary the adaptor fitting.
I hope this helps

New User Asked -
The EFI fuse blows every time I replace it so I am not able to start the car. Before car broke down we had revved it out in 1st gear @ 7000RPMs without shifting to 2nd and all lights on the dash got bright before the power died. I replaced the 60 amp fuse under the hood to restore power, and noticed the efi was also blown. But I cannot start the car because this fuse continues to blow every time I turn the ignition to the on position. Also I noticed that the radio isn't any longer working and that the fuse is still good. Don't know if that has anything to do with it. Can you help?

Douglas -
Start by unplugging the fuel injectors to see if the injectors/harness may have shorted. At that many rpm's yo may have melted wiring somewhere. Try another fuse? If the fuse don't blow you have narrowed downt the short. If not unplug the fuel pump and try again.

Douglas -
Please let us know the fuse number that is blowing and what you have tried.
