1993 Audi 100 Electrical / Lighting Systems

New User Asked -
Why does the oil indicator light stay on after starting when oil level and pressure are fine? The dealer says it is some type of module that controls the transmission and the wiring harness, and will cost $7,000 to fix. Does this sound right? Please help.

Douglas -
It doesn't sound right in the sense they are wanting to do a repair that costs twice the car's value.

An Ebay search revealed an Audi transmission control module (computer, tcm, etc) for about $100. But, I don't even know how the module could be related to your car. Part of me wonders if the dealer had one of these on the shelf, that they figured they'd never be able to sell, and wanted to unload it. Hard to say.

The most common cause of an oil light while pressure is fine (no engine ticking, knocking) is a problem with oil (pressure) sending unit or the wiring to it.

Definitely get a second opinion at another repair facility. It is recommend to find a facility that has Audi service information. This will be helpful for advanced trouble shooting.

Do you do any work on your vehicles?

New User -
Yes, i am able to do some mechanical work on my car. The oil sending unit has been replaced.

Douglas -
Any change with the new sending unit?

Check the wire to the sending unit, the connection is often overlooked.

New User -
There is no change with the new sending unit and the wring is fine. That is why i turned to the dealer for help. Then they started to talk about the transmission control module. Is this module inside or outside of the transmission?

Douglas -
It should be located under the passengers (right) side of the dash. Copy and paste the following link for an image-

What I don't like is that the dealer said they found a problem with the wiring and the TCM that is causing your oil light to be on. It seems you'd have to fix one to discover the other.

Did you try grounding the wire (assuming this has a common one wire sending unit)?

What you really need is genuine Audi service info to follow flow charts-

This is the one I'd buy.

New User -
Your ststement makes sense to me also. It seems they are trying to cover all bases by saying both the harness and tcm are bad. If you can detect a short in the harness, shouldn't you be able to detect where the short is?

I hope this helps

New User -
There is a mark on both camshafts the mark will be located usually on the back sude of the sprockets. when you said on the back it means on the back of the camshaft sprockets so I have to loose to see it because is in the back right

macconeck -
That is correct the same as the 8 cylinder engine

1991 Audi 100 Chassis / Suspension & Steering

New User Asked -
steering wheel resistance when wheel is turned fast, power pump replaced yesterday , oil lvel is good.

macconeck -
you may have restricted lines and it could be that you need to change the in line power steering filters since you have changed the pump
make sure you check front tire pressures and that there is not an alighnment problem
as these can contribute to the same symptoms

New User -
Hi,the link works now, thank you. A restriction sounds logical ! where are the inline filters located anyhow?

Walt

macconeck -
The filter will be located anywhere on the intake or return hose it will be evident by the transition from the hose to a similer cylindral object
You will have to follow the hose down
to the pump and there should only be one

macconeck -
It will resemble a fuel filter and possibly have a clamp on both ends
they can be installed anywhere in the line
This will also be a good time to flush out the power steering system
I hope this helps

1991 Audi 100 Engine

New User Asked -
in Feb. I started and let the car run until it was heated up and then shut it off without going anywhere. 2 weeks later I tried to start it but it had a rough idle and back fired, since then it won't start and I have replaced with a used emc and new spark plugs. Yes I am getting gas up to the engine and spark also

macconeck -
The problem you are having is consistent with a vacume leak at the intake manifold or a problem with your EGR system [check the valve to make sure it is not clogged up with carbon
Check around the engine for cracked damaged or loose vacume hoses
I hope this helps

New User -
where on this car is the egr valve?

macconeck -
it will be located just above the valve cover on the right hand sine at the end of a medeim size hose
