1998 deville heater blower motor not working. plugged in a new one and still don't work.
Roger -
Hello, Did you replace the blower motor AND the power module as an assembly?
Usually the power module fails due to the blower motor drawing too many amps to turn.
The power module is mounted piggyback to the blower motor..is flat like a frizby. If this is a 1998 DeVille its a bit of a job to get the motor and power module out to replace them.

Car is completely dead.

I would first check the battery cables, boost the battery or replace the battery. If the battery or volts warning light is on when the engine is RUNNING, you likely have a bad alternator.

My turn signals do not work....the front bulb lights up when I manually push to left or right. Rear turn signal bulbs do not work at all. my emergency flashers work.
I do not see any bad bulbs in rear of car.

You will need to use a test light or DVOM to determine if you are missing power or ground.

This is in regards to the automatic door lock on the passenger side. The door locked will not lock if I try to engage it via the remote, the drivers side door lock...or even with its own lock on the door. I can only get it to lock with the key in the door. Is this an expensive fix? Is it easy enough for me to do? I had a unusual event. In the past 4 months or so...on three separate occasions I noticed a small stream of smoke coming up straight for the steering column. Could this be connected. It was as though a wire was burning. I put the car in park immediately and shut it off. When I would restart it...no problem...and it was weeks between events. It always happened when I was sitting idle for some time (like in a fast food line) with my foot on the brake. Would this be any connection to the door lock wiring running from door to door? Or do you have any ideas what might be causing this problem?
Sterlingfixer -
I believe you have 2 seperate problems. The smoke from the steering column is likely the turn signal switch or connector failing. The brake lights run through the turn signal switch on your car. You may be able to delay the repair by putting the car in park, rather than staying on the brake when waiting in line.
The door lock problem sounds like a bad latch/actuator assembly in the door. I have a Buick with the same symptoms. The parts you need can come only from a dealer or a junk yard.

the break lights when i turn the car off stays on. it has a system that keeps the lights on for a few seconds when the engine is off. but the front lights go off and not the rear.

Hello, Your car has a brake light switch that is adjustable. Can you lift the foot brake pedal with your foot and cause the lights to turn off? It may be a simple adjustment will fix it.
Do you want to adjust it yourself?

Did you release the question or plan to pay for it. Reason I ask is the answer given was proper. Also, did this problem "just start" or has it been a problem for a while. Let me know but do not release the question unless you think the advice is incorrect.
New User -
I want to fix it my self
encsisme -
You did not answer the question did this problem "just start" or has it been a problem for a while. It appears the brake light actuator switch has failed. The switch is located above the brake pedal and costs about 20.00. Let me know if you need help troubleshooting the switch.

I NEED TO KNOW THE LOCATION OF THE FLASHER UNIT. I HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO FIND IT AND HAVE ALREADY PURCHASED THE NEW ONE TO INSTALL. PLEASE ADVISE. THANK YOU.
Roger -
Hello, it should be on the cross brace the steering column bolts to.
It may be easiest to see if you were to remove the trim piece directly below the steering column. I'm talking about the part in front of the driver's knees and is the color of the dash.
Under that panel you'll find a metal panel to remove as well. With the metal panel off you can look along the edge of the opening on the left side. The flasher is a small box mounted on a bracket.

Just started to have this problem yesterday. AC normally works great! The service engine light came on, and the AC stopped cooling (blew hot air). Then it would cycle, the light would go out, and the AC would start to send cold air again. The AC off, light on again, it continued to cycle like this.. on then off... This continued for the entire trip, not good on a 100 degree day in Texas! Any ideas?

I ran the diagnostic codes from the computer (holding OFF and WARMER for three seconds with key on, engine off). Here is what I got in order received:
E
E47
E52
E85
E91
EE
E91
F
F31
FF
F31
7.0
Roger -
Hello, Let me get some info on these codes. The E codes are powertrain and the F codes are body codes.
Back soon,
Roger
New User -
Hi Rodger, Here is what I found on the codes:
Diagnostic Trouble Codes - 1991 Cadillac
E47 BCM to PCM/ECM Data Problem
E52 PCM/ECM Memory Reset
E85 Throttle Body Service Required
E91 Cruise - PRNDL Switch Problem
F31 - Display Panels to BCM Data Problem
Of course I don't know what BCM, PCM/ECM mean...
Roger -
BCM = Body Control Module
PCM/ECM = Powertrain Control Module/Engine Control Module.
Do any of the display panels for the Climate Control or the Fuel Data Panel go blank at times? That would be a cause of a F31 code and possibly the E47 code as well.
E52 means only that the battery has been disconnected in the car's history and the codes were not cleared. No defect here, no action required.
E85 Throttle Body Service Required means the throttle body is coked up with fuel deposits. Vacuum is impaired and the throttle may be at an RPM higher than specs at idle. The coking prevents a properly closed throttle vale against the throttle bore.
E91 PRNDL Switch is the switch right on top of the transmission just beneath the gearshift cable connection. This switch serves as the Neutral Safety Switch and the Back-up Light Switch. It is adjustable and must be indexed properly or the PCM will not interpret what gear the car is in correctly. Indexing permits the engine to start in only Park and Neutral gearshift positions.
To clear the codes enter diagnostics as you normally do. Wait for the 7.0 to display. Then hold down both OFF and Fan LO buttons until you see F00. Let go of the buttons and watch for the 7.0 to appear again. Hold down OFF and the Fan Hi buttons until you see E00. Release the buttons.
Press the AUTO button or cycle the key to exit diagnostics.
Drive the car and see what codes come back and let me know what happens.
Roger

The fuel data display cycles through all the various displays constantly and resets each time the car is used. This has been going on for about a year now and didn't seem to effect operations or performance at all so I never took action.
I'll reset the codes as suggested and see what we get after more use.
Does any of these codes point to why the AC has started to cycle like it is?
Roger -
Code E47 will cause the A/c to drop out. If the Body Control Module loses communication with the PCM/ECM it will lose the feedback that the engine is running and A/C is desired.
This common problem in this model is most often fixed by replacing the Body Control Module. There are Technical Service Bulletins applicable here and it is best to get consultation with your Cadillac Dealer to ensure you have the correct PROM for your car. The PROM is the removable "PROGRAMMABLE READ ONLY MEMORY" chip inside the BCM case. If it is the correct one just transfer it to the new BCM.
Questions?,

Hi Rodger, sorry about not getting back with you. The problem is now only happening once a week or so... and fixes itself quickly... so I've been living with it. I'm assuming it that BCM that you spoke off, but until it fails more often, I'm going to wait to fix it. Thanks, Bill
Roger -
OK Bill, Do you want me to continue to hang on?

Roger
New User -
No thanks Roger, you can close this event. Thanks for the information! Bill
Very slow on accelerating unless I put the gearshift into #1, one its going, its fine. Some are trying to sell mea transmission, but I suspect something "less expensive".
Roger -
Hi, Can your engine breathe? If the exhaust is restricted it will run sluggish and worsen as the engine warms up.
Could be a catalytic converter or muffler problem......
Putting the trans in #1 delays the first to second gear shift until you move the shift lever. This will tend to mask an exhaust restriction.
My "Change Oil Soon" light frequently comes on after tha car is warmed up, and at the same time the fuel use indicator section resets over and over while the light is on. the light turns on and off for a while and then everything works normally, generally until the vehicle is turned off, but usually happens again the next time it is used. Any causes for this other than the ECU?
Roger -
Hello, Have you checked the car for diagnostic codes present?
Turn the key on, leave the engine off. Hold down the Climate Control Off and Warmer buttons at the same time until the display changes then release the buttons.
Codes will have E codes and F codes.
Please tell me the codes that are present. Ignore "70".
Roger
New User -
Thanks for responding. I do have a code - F31. Does it help your diagnosis?
Frank
Roger -
Code F31 points to a data communication problem between the Fuel Data Center (FDC) and the car's Body Control Module (BCM)
A different FDC might fix the problem and truthfully its a gamble if it will. Used parts will help control your cost. I doubt you can find a remanufactured part these days.
If the car interior is often filled with cigarette smoke the electronic circuit boards are effected over time by nicotine deposits. Especially the push button electronic switches.

I believe it's the idle speed motor assembly. I also know that it can be adjusted, but how?
Falkeneiz -
if you can be more specific about about the problem you are having I might can help you. You have a 4.5L engine that is throttle body injected. the idle speed motor generally operates when the A/C is turned on. Its purpose is to raise idle speed with the additional load. If you would like you can contact me via email. It might be quicker than this. Just respond & (accept)to this. Diagrams can be sent easier if needed

1989 Cadillac Coupe DeVille Engine Vibration When idling Always
New User Asked -
I have changed the plugs, wires, rotor and cap. Smooth idle in park. Also smooth idle in park with A/C on. In gear (drive) the engine tends to shudder and runs rough with the brake on. It drives ok, but still has rough idle and shudder at stop signs. I believe the pump for the air leveler burned out. I spent $1,200 at the dealer to replace the rear shocks (levelers) but after that the air pump keep going on when the care was not running and I would hear air escape in the back wheel wells where I had the new air shocks replaced. I think the pump just burned up since I not longer hear it or see the leveling light come on. Could this be related? This is a nice Calif car that I bought last year with 29K. White leather interior. What is the next step? Timing? Vacuum? Is this transmission related? Thanks HELP!!
Les -
Hi;
On your transmission there should be a connector that looks square. Disconnect it and see if that gets rid of the problem. This connector goes to the torque converter lock up switch. Most likely it has failed and disconnecting it will disengage the solenoid. Good Luck Les
New User -
OK, a few questions.
1. do I need a rack to reach this spot
2. if I disconnect it is it ok to drive or just to test in drive with the brake on. Not sure what a tirque converter lock upo switch does.
3. if this is the problem is this a part I can put on and repair or do I need a mechanic
4. Est cost?
I hit (straddled) a large piece of debris on the freeway. It hit, but I had the dealer look under and they said all was ok. Is this in a position that could have been hit?
Thanks
Les -
Hi;
You should be able to disconnect it with out a problem. It will be ok to drive with it disconnected. This is not a do it yourself project. About $250.00 parts and labor. Good Luck Les.
New User -
Discussed this with Cottman Transmission. THey say the car would stall out completely as soon as it was put in gear if the solinoid was stuck. They suggest Motor mounts many be broken. What do you think
Les -
Hi;
Nice to hear from you again. They probably told you to change the mounts. The car will not stall out completely if the the lock up goes out. To check your motor mount. Have someone put it in gear while you are watching the engine movement. If you see the engine move more than about six inches, that is a bad motor mount. I still will say that is either the lock up or the wiring harness underneath the car. Shop around to a local shop and see if they will give you a free estimate. After studing the problem, sounds like you might of have some damage done to a wiring harness. Any more Questions Feel Free to contact. Good Luck Les.
