Chev C-10 Pick-up

1983 Chev C-10 Pick-up Ignition System Won't Start

New User Asked -
5.0 litre. After running normal the next day it failed to start. (no spark) I replaced the distributor cap, rotor and coil. Engine started and ran normal for a few minutes then it quit. I pulled distributor, replaced module, and pick-up and also new rotor. Engine started ran normal for a couple of minutes then quit. won't start, no spark. Have power to distributor and all else seems o.k. I have not tried another rotor as yet but if that is the problem, why would it fail? The truck ran for a year are longer with the rotor before the initial trouble.

Sterlingfixer -
Hi,
Check the connections of the wire harness to the distributor cap.

Make sure the distributor cap center electrode (button) is not broken.

Make sure no wires in the lower distributor harness are broken.

Remove the cap with the wires connected. Lay something between the coil electrode and ground. When you crank the engine, it should spark.

If not, touch a test light between power and 1 of your pickup terminals. Again you should have spark. If not, get a Delco module and coil.

If you have strong spark at coil, then the problem lies in the cap or rotor.

Hope this helps,
Dale

New User -
it sounds like it attempts to fire when you stop trying to start it, this this a clue.

New User -
There is fire at the coil and the distributor cap is new and looks ok. It appears the rotor is failing. What would cause this?

Sterlingfixer -
Check for a rotor that is not in alignment with the cap (Too short, too low etc) Look on the distributor cap to see where the spark is making its arc for a clue about the alignment. I think there can be a problem by using the wrong screws to bolt the coil to the cap causing the voltage to make a short circuit instead of going through the rotor as it is supposed to. Get a new Delco cap (D336) and rotor (D448)and watch the installation of the coil very closely.

If you get a fire out of the coil when you turn the key off, then the problem is between the pickup and the module.

1982 Chev C-10 Pick-up Engine

New User Asked -
Hi I have a high pitch whinning noise coming from my engine. I've taken off water pump/alt belt and then power steer belt but it's not those bearings. The sound is almost the same as a supercharger whine but slightly more louder/high pitch. It's difficult to isolate where the sound comes from but could be coming from back of motor. Noise rises and falls with engine revs. Thanks for help

Douglas -
The bearing in the distributor wear out after a while. Usually causes starting/ running problem, but not always. Check this and get back to me.

New User -
Thanks I will check. Engine was rebuilt 10 yrs ago, I have tracked down builder and he said owner wanted a gear-drive instead of chain, to give it that supercharger whine/sound. I have searched internet forums and lots of people have done this to. Could this be it? Major work to change? Cant get sump away from cross member?

Douglas -
I don't recall the noise on gear drive set-ups, but it's been quite a while since I've heard one... It is not really major work but is dealing with major components. Is this something you'd like to try replacing?

1978 Chev C-10 Pick-up Electrical / Lighting Systems Malfunction Happens always Always

New User Asked -
1978 CHEV C-10 PICKUP WHEN BOTH GAS TANKS ARE FULL AND I SELECT THE LEFT GAS TANK FOR INSTANCE THE GAUGE CONTINUES TO READ FULL THEN WHEN I SWITCH TO THE RIGHT TANK THE GUAGE SHOWS A DROP IN THE FUEL LEVEL I HAVE LOOKED AT THE WIRING PLUG TO THE TANK SELECTOR SWITCH AND IT IS PLUGED IN PROPERLY? CAN YOU HELP ME SOLVE THIS PROBLEM THANK YOU DON.

encsisme -
Don, there is a sliding mili-volt controller in the gas tank. To correct the problem will require dropping the fuel tank and adjusting the float on the sending unit. If for some reason the float will not adjust (normally due to age) you will have to replace the sending unit (cost is normally about 100.00.. for the conveince of making sure the tank is full (vice empty) I would not worry about the work. Let me know if I can be more help.

New User -
the gauge reads correctly on both tanks but when the switch is on the left tank it reads the right tank when the switch is on the right tank it reads the left tank? still need more info thank you don.

encsisme -
ooo i mis understood you initial question.. try to flip the wires on the tank switch and see what happens..

New User -
do you mean the switch on the dash or at the tanks the dash switch will only fit on the connectors one way this i have already looked at there are three slots one one side of the switch and two on the other side ? i do not know how long it has been like this i just purchaced the truck. need more info thank you don.

encsisme -
No i meant at the tanks.. I do not believe that you can switch the wires at the dash with out some problems.. the fuel pumps will not care what the alignment of the wiring is.. they just need juice to run. Al

1976 Chev C-10 Pick-up Ignition System

New User Asked -
I was operating the pickup this morning and everything was going find until the ignition switch would not turn off the the engine and it was frozen in the run position. I had to disconnect the battery to stop the more. After shutting down the motor I was able jeggle the starter switch back about half with a set of pliers. However, now I am able to restart the engine. I have power to the switch and the gages actrivate when turn the switch forward. I never have had any ignition or starter problems before today.

Douglas -
Would the key not move to the off position, or the key would move?

If the key would not move the Lock Cylinder may on its way out. You can try spray lubricant, but part replacement will likely be required.

New User -
Actually the switch is moving even without the key.

Douglas -
You'll have to remove the lock cylinder. Inpsect the column for damage, if none is found replace the lock cylinder.

1973 Chev C-10 Pick-up Engine Won't Start When starting Always

New User Asked -
cranks ok but won't start or starts for 1 second and sounds normal during that second but dies immediately. Was working normally...started doing this when I came out of the grocery store and now that it is cold it still does the same thing. Seems to have spark and seems to have gas coming into the carb. Same symptoms if I spray starting fluid into the carb.

Gro -
Ok , it could be many things, but it all stems from your fuel system, more at the Carb. Try changing the fuel filter, cause Im sure it needs it, the needle valve in the carb (quadrajet?) could be plugged, or more than likely your choke is stuck cleaning every thing on the carb and choke could reduce all of this and make it run right

New User -
Actually it turned out to be a worn timing gear.
The camshaft gear had nylon teeth, which were worn
down to nubs. The chain jumped and the timing was
off.
