1996 Chev Camaro Convertible Drive Train / Driveline Slipping When shifting Always

New User Asked -
I have a 96 Camaro RS with 3.8 and automatic with 98,000 miles.
When cruising around 50 mph, and applying throttle there seems to be a stutter/hesitation when downshifting or maybe when converter unlocks.
Also, seems to take too long when shifting under hard acceleration from first to second gear, motor revs up before settling into next gear. There doesn't seem to be any slippage once it does go into gear though.

Hello, I highly recommend you road test with a transmission technician who is monitoring your car's transmission performance with a scanner. Your car has OBD II technology and the GM TECH II, or, a Snap-On MT2500 Scanner with the correct software will help you get the correct repair path identified.

Doesn't sound like fluid and filter service could be expected to resolve this one.

So you think it could be a "control" problem rather than a mechanical problem?

Roger -
Sure, a solenoid could be lazy, filter may be restricted causing line pressure issues, several things can be checked before a decision is made to overhaul vs. trading cars.

Good road test, good technician = foundationally informed decisions. It's good business.

Well, they might be. Have you checked your ignition wire boots for pin holes burned through? Wide open throttle calls for everything the ignition coils have got and I'm wondering too if you are experiencing two cylinders (hopefully the same ignition coil) dropping/shorting out. A wastefire ignition coil system fires both connected cylinders regardless of their respective cylinder's compression stroke. One cylinder is productive, the fire/spark sent to the other cylinder is "wasted".

One spark leak on either wire connected to the same coil can mean trouble on both. The spark simply goes to ground through the path of least resistance.

Does this make sense at all?

My fingers are crossed, I won't quit.

Thanks,

Roger

Hello, I'm hoping you'll update me on the status of your question.

Please advise,

Roger

New User -
I am also experiencing a full thottle continuous stutter, as if a couple of cylinders weren't firing, runs fine when not full throttle. Also, when accelerating fast from idle there is a hesitation.

Not sure if problems are related.

New User -
Yes it does make sense, I will check this out tonight. Thanks!

Roger -
