I can not find the location of the fuel filter. I have taken the tank but still unable to locate it. I was told it was on the firewall, but i have straight lines no filter. I would like a diagram of the location it possible. Thank you
Roger -
Hello, Well I'll not be able to get you a diagram before tomorrow. When I get one where shall I FAX it to ? Will a cover sheet be needed for the FAX?
The fuel filter is often found on the frame rail under the car. If you follow the fuel lines that connect to the fuel tank forward along the frame toward the engine, I believe you'll locate it. Use caution as the fuel line may well be under pressure and spray uncontrolably til pressure depletes. I even take the gas cap loose to rid any pressure in the tank from the emissions system or thermal heat expansion.
Please advise,
Roger

Did you locate the fuel filter? Do you have a FAX number?

Hello?, Do you have a FAX number? The fuel filter is in the tank and is part of the fuel pump. I can send you replacement instructions if you like.
If you'll just respond I'll know whether to FAX what I have for you, or type it on this site.
Thanks,
Roger

I do not have a fax machine. Thank you for the help. Please type to me further instructions if at all possible.

This is the instruction I found for the fuel filter replacement. You'll see the filter comes off in step #4.
REMOVAL & INSTALLATION (1.8L)
1. Fuel pump is located in fuel tank and is integral with fuel sending unit assembly. Relieve fuel pressure. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove rear seat cushion. Remove 4 fuel sending unit assembly access panel bolts and remove access panel. Disconnect harness connector from fuel sending unit assembly.
2. Remove fuel pipe from top of fuel sending unit assembly. Remove 8 fuel sending unit assembly hold-down bolts and remove hold-down plate. Remove fuel sending unit assembly and "O" ring from fuel tank.
3. Remove No.2 fuel sending unit support and rubber cushion. Remove fuel pressure regulator. Remove fuel pump strainer hold-down clip and remove fuel pump strainer.
4. Remove No.1 fuel sending unit support from fuel sending unit plate. Remove No.1 fuel filter cushion from fuel filter. Disconnect harness connector from fuel pump. Remove fuel pump from fuel filter.
5. To install, reverse removal procedure. Use NEW "O" ring on fuel pressure regulator and fuel sending unit assembly. Tighten fuel sending unit assembly hold-down bolts to specification.
1991 Chev Metro Engine Stalling Happens always When warm
New User Asked -
Hi, when cold l can drive 80 mph for a long time, when l slow down on a traficc lifht it will die and only start after 4 minutes of waiting, it may go again for a long time and if stalls l have to wait 3 to 5 minutes to start again, replaced fuel filter, many sensors, check timing, etc. some say is a cold swicht stuck, some say is the fuel pump, other the injector, the problem is consistent, after driving for a half hour or more if stalls i will have to wait 3 to 5 minutes to start again, coil is cold, engine cylinder block was rebuilt.

Hello, When this happens and your car won't start for a few minutes, does the starter spin the engine, or not? Is your transmission an automatic?
Please advise,
Roger
New User -
is automatic, the starter does work, it try,s to start buy it only crank`s,almost fires up, when engine does start, idle well but when l shift to drive it stalls again, after 4 minutes idles and goes in drive aganist its will but it goes.

Have you condidered the fuel filter that is inside the fuel tank? It is a very fine mesh, shaped similar to a test tube, and if it is dirty, it will collapse from the suction of the running of the fuel pump and you 'run out of gas'... for lack of fuel flow.
After the engine stops and the suction inside the filter stops, the filter will expand and allow fuel to flow until the pump sucks the filter flat again and flow is again restricted.
The fuel tank has to come down to change this filter in most cases. You will of course want the fuel tank near EMPTY to facilitate repairs.
Your car could have a transmission torque converter clutch problem, but not likely as the engine would restart, run fine but die the moment you selected a gear.
Your turn,
Roger

It sounds like it could be it, someone had said that the pump may be week, so for this two reazons maybe pump week and inside filter cloged l will remove the tank soon and check it out, thank`s, will let you know.
Roger -
I believe the filter to be clogged, but you may not need a new pump unless you see evidence of the wiring connector or wires on the pump and sending unit assembly have been overheating. It's your call and your money. A new filter comes with a pump purchase but, the filter can be bought seperately, if you want to go that way.
I'll look forward to your next message.
