1996 Chev Monte Carlo Engine Malfunction When idling When cold

New User Asked -
3.1 V-6 Auto Engine starts fine when cold but idles @ 2000-3000 RPM. Will not "kick-down" at all. Have to shut off and restart when engine begins to warm up to bring idle down to normal. Runs fine when warm.

New User -
No codes show on the OBDII check

Douglas -
What are you dealing with for temperatures?

Check resistance of coolant sensor vs specs.

If coolant sensor reads okay (read value on a scantool if possible) look at the idle speed motor itself.
Always be sure to check harness and connectors.
Lastly could be a pcm (computer) problem. (I didn't find any service bulletins for this problem)

1996 Chev Monte Carlo Ignition System Won't Start Happens sometimes When warm

New User Asked -
i can start my car and run it for half an hour to an hour just fine, but if i let it idle after that for 15 minutes it starts to miss out and quits running and wont start up for atleast 3 hours. it also does it if i shut it off after running it for an hour down the road. i shut it off it wont start up again for about 3 hours. ty you for your help, Benny Wright

New User -
i forgot to tell you that it is a 3.1 v-6

New User -
my check engine light does come on and i had it looked at and all they could tell me that it was an o2 sensor on the left bank that was bad. that didnt help my problem when i changed that.

Royhutch -
Sounds like you have a coil pack going bad with the ignition module under the pack that is breaking down when it gets hot. They are both very expensive, so I would replace the module under the coils first.

New User -
could you tell me what that is and what it looks like and where to find it on the engine

Royhutch -
Could be on the front, back or left side of the engine. It is a box 3 x 9 inches long. There are 3 coils that have 2 plug wires each. The module is underneath and you will have to remove the coils to get to it. If you trace the plug wires you can find it.

Royhutch -
The check engine light will come on when your engine missfires & when it does the O2 sensor reads that the unused fuel is too rich in the exhaust.

New User -
ok ty very much

Also if this does not correct the issue try to open that gas cap and see if the problem goes away. I have seen similar probles with a faulty gas cap.
Also please to not "release" the question but respond to the question. Releasing does not allow me to continue to work with you and opens your questions to other mechanics while a reply allows me to continue to still work with u thru this problem.

1995 Chev Monte Carlo Electrical / Lighting Systems Malfunction Happens sometimes Always

wgigstead Asked -
when the right turn signal is used, the right brake light works. if you turn on the left turn signal the right side brake light goes out and does not work, until the right turn signal is activated

Kerry -
Turn signal flasher module is defective, barring a any other wire problems such as a short or an open connection of some kind.

1995 Chev Monte Carlo Ignition System Chugging When idling Always

New User Asked -
when the car is running cold or warm you can hear it misfiring from the tailpipe. we replaced all the coils the module and the plugs and wires were changed a couple of months ago.

Douglas -
Is the check engine light on? If it is you'll need to have the trouble codes checked. You may be able to do this yourself, but some 95's require a scan tool.

You will also want to perform a compression test to see if there is a mechanical problem.

The fuel injectors will also need to be checked. You can unplug one injector at a time. Does this change how the engine runs? It should, if not you have identified which cylinder(s) are problem. Check for adequate spark at that cylinder. Then check compression. And lastly swap that injector with a known good one. If the problem follows that injector, the injector is the problem.

If you are losing coolant or overheating let me know.

New User -
i ran my scanner on the car and there was no codes in the computer and the engine light is not on. the car is not overheating at all. This has been going on for thae last week. Out of the tailpipe is sounds like you are saying the p in the alphabet. but when you are driving the car at higher speeds you cannot feel it.

Douglas -
If only during idle check the egr valve, it may be hanging open slightly.

Also clean the throttle body and blade along with the idle speed motor and its passageway.

New User -
it has been done. i still am wondering about the injectors. It was doing the same thing before but that is the reason we put plugs and wires on it and it was one of the coil packs. after we changed the bad coil pack it ran fine. now we are back to the same miss again so we changed all the other coils and module still no luck.

Douglas -
Have you been able to determine which cylinder is misfiring?
