1997 Chrysler Cirrus Ignition System

New User Asked -
My '97 Cirrus will not start. There were 3 occaisions where the engine stopped after driving an hour or more at highway cruise speeds. RPM's went immediately to zero. Dead. It would not restart. I left the car and came back in the morning. The car started normally the next morning. The third time this happened, the car stayed dead.

I have done some troubleshooting.

1) the starting motor cranks normally

2) the car starts and runs very roughly when I spray starting ether into the intake. It stops when it runs out of ether.

3) there is no electrical power to the fuel pump. When I snake a 12 volt wire to the fuel pump, the fuel pump runs fine. Then I attach a voltmeter to the fuel pump connector, it always reads "zero voltage". Connecting a 12 volt wire to the fuel pump makes it run, but the car does not start.

This makes me believe there was a heat related failure. Either the engine computer or a sensor began failing when it got hot . . . and is now mortally dead.

After the first two failures, I connected an OBD reader to the diagnostic connector on the car and it showed NO faults. I have not tried again after the third failure.

Your thoughts?

Hard to diagnose without setting codes. Crankshaft position sensors have symptoms very similar to yours, so that would be a good place to start.Last one I replaced also set no codes.

New User -
OK . . . how do I test the crankshaft position sensor to see if it's bad? (The car doesn't run now.)

Please advise.

Bruce Kit -
I use a volt/ohm meter but some just change the sensor if it can be found in your area cheap.
Mine had erratic hard stert problems that progressively worse, progressing to no start.

I just replaced it and its been trouble free for over a year, which was an improvement to no hot start every 3nd day!

New User -
Have been too busy to work on the car. Am back on it now.

The sensor is getting power from the PCM. I checked.

The signal across the sensor should vary from 0.5 volt to 5 volt when cranking the engine with the starter. NOT. The signal across the sensor is 0.0 volts with the ignition switch off. When I crank the engine, the signal goes to 5 volts (steady).

Is that the typical failure mode?

Am going to replace the sensor and see if that fixes the problem.

Please advise.

Bruce Kit -
You are on the right track Re: testing/replacing the sensor.

New User -
Please answer the questions I asked.

Bruce Kit -
Yes the voltage should fluctuate as you indicated, not a steady 5 volts.

New User -
The sensor broke while removing it. Had to pull the transmission and bang it out from the inside. Sensor is replaced and car runs fine now.

1995 Chrysler Cirrus Engine Stalling When idling No pattern

New User Asked -
Car seems to stall periodically. Doesn't matter warm or cold, good gas - cheap gas, etc. Seems to stall at lights(stops) and sometimes idling will cycle or low idle. times while driving (maybe at constant speed) the car surges down then back up (w/o stalling). Sometimes(very few) there is a code-engine light comes on, but most of the time it doesn't. I always get a 12 and sometimes a 13. I have replaced the battery, because the old was shot. It seems that i sometimes smell that rotten egg smell like my battery is overcharging? Anything I can check to narrow it down?

Sterlingfixer -
I would install a fuel pressure gauge, because low fuel pressure can cause this symptom. You may have a bad fuel pump. possibilties are fualty EGR valve/system (code 13). A faulty distributor can cause this symptom, and the rotten egg smell. Check the MAP sensor and hose, making sure it is working fine.
Best wishes,
Dale

Under which conditions is the vehicle stalling now, when coming to a stop or at highway speed? Have you confirmed no spark again?

Do you get any Key On/Off trouble codes?

New User -
Last month [hot weather] it started to stall again any timeistopped so i quit using it This seems to be a warning of things to come I am afraid of another failure at speed ie. [700.00 + labor +tow]

No MFI, what does this refer to?

Did you check for voltage on both sides of the fuses?

Douglas -
Hello,

There is an online repair manual with diagrams available. Visit:

identifix.com

Then click on 'Try Direct Hit'
Then click 'Test-Drive'

The preselected vehicle will be a Dodge Durango. Now click 'New Vehicle' on the upper right hand side of the page. Select the 1998 Dodge Stratus which is the same as 1995 Cirrus.

Now you will have access to complete wiring diagrams which likely will be required to troubleshoot and repair the problem. This is professional repair information which should suit you well.
