1984 Dodge Aries Electrical / Lighting Systems Malfunction Happens sometimes No pattern
New User Asked -
Voltmeter jumps into the red zone, then back to normal. Has toasted two sets of headlights. New alternator and battery, made no difference. Any suggestions?

If you have the 2.2 motor and a Chrysler alternator, you have a remote voltage regulator. This is the likely source of your problems. The other thing to check very closely is the condition of the wiring to the alternator. Poor wiring/connections/grounds can cause voltage spikes like you are seeing.

Can you tell me where the voltage reg. is located? It is a 2.2. Thanks!

It has been too looong, I do not remember the specific location. The voltage regulator is a metal box about 5 inches tall, 3 inches across and 1/2 inch thick. It will be mounted in an upright position under the hood. There are 2 wires that plug into it top center. It should be on the firewall, radiator/headlamp support, or along the fender edges. If you cannot find it with this description, write me again and I will see if any of my old books show it.
