1968 Dodge Charger Engine  When driving

Asked -
What is the formula for figuring compression?

encsisme -
Start with the engine cold remove the spark plugs, screw the compression tester into cyl nr 1, crank the engine over 2 or 3 times, record the reading from the tester, continue until you have all the cylinders read. Compare the readings, you should be looking at about 175 - 195 per cyl. If you find a cylinder that is really low... squirt about a half an ounce of oil into the cyl then repeat the test. If the compression is considerably higher the problem is your rings are leaking by.. if no change then the problem is with the valves not seating. Let me know. AL

I need to know how to compute the compression? To asure that I have the right stroke with the pistons, the pistons rods and cyc.heads that I plan to use on that engine.

1968 Dodge Charger Engine Upgrade

Asked -
I have a 1968 Dodge Charger with a 383 bored to a 394. My compression with stock heads is figured to be 10.52:1. This is ineffcient with unleaded fuel. What is the best compression that I can hope to achieve with this bore? I would to put Edelbrok heads on it, they have an 84cc chamber vol. which would give me a compression of 8.07:1 is this to low for this engine? P.S. You guy gave me the equation for compression.

encsisme -
Standard compression today is 8:1 or 8.5:1. 9:1 or higher is considered high compression and 10:5 or higher is only for racing applications. If you find that your not happy with the compression ratio you can always shave the heads to get a higher compression, but this compression ration you have will work nicely and depending on your choice of cam you will have an engine that will last for years. I recommend calling the cam shaft manufacturer and let them know about the engine and the car it will sit in to get the best results. Sounds like a fun project.

So far you have told me how to calulate compression now I need to know about HP. I have a 383 bored out to 4.31". My Comp cam is Adj. Dur. Int. 224 Ext. 230, Lift Int. 477, Ext. 480, with a 110 LSA. the heads are Edelbrock Preformer with a Int. 2.14, Ext 1,81" and 84cc with a 1.5 rocker arm ratio. The carb is a Holly 670 cfm wtih Hooker Headers, Purple Hornie header muffers, and a 2.5" ext pipes, also a H pipe Kit was built in to this system. What is the est. horse power and how is the hp calulated? What is the Equation for horse power?

Hello, I recommend the following link:

http://www.worldclassmusclecars.com/formulas.html

You really would benefit most by testing done on a dynomometer.

If this suggestion does not provide enough of what you are lookin for try a GOOGLE SEARCH and type in "calculating horsepower". Good luck with your hard work.
