New User Asked -
How to wire the pick up cap stop light 9 OVER THE REAR window so it only works with the stop lights and not the turn signal.
Roger -
Hi, Locate the wire harness for the high mount stop light running down from the light. It may be under the carpet or down the inside corner of the cab.
Connect the wire/wires made hot when the turn signals are active to the brake light switch wire that is made hot when the brake pedal is pressed.
Any help?,
Roger
Roger -
Have you made modifications to the truck wiring in the past??
If you would like a wiring diagram please advise your email address.
Im at looking at getting a "power chip" or some other type of performance enhancer for the computer on my 2003 Dakota with a 3.9l. Primarily for more h.p. from a stop. What one would recommend if any? Thak-you
Les -
Hi;
You might want to do some internet shopping.
Check them all out and also read the pages real careful. There is a lot of them out there. Some will increase horsepower. and some will increase torque. Depending on what you are really looking for. I have installed a couple of them on diesels and have notice quite a difference on performance. They all came from different manufacturer. Best bet would be to call your dodge dealer and ask a parts sale man what he would recommend. Most of the performance chips that are aftermarkets are just a program that you download to your computer. So there is no actual taking the computer out of the car, taking it a part and replacing a chip. Most of the ones I've done have taken no more than about fifteen minutes. Good Luck Les.

The wipers will not come on. The fuse and relay are fine. however the fuse only has .85 v on it not 12. There is twelve volts on the wiper switch connector in several places on the column. the washer does not work either.
Douglas -
Are you getting 12 volts on one side or both sides of the fuse when the fuse is installed? Does the voltage change went the wipers are turned on (key On of course)?
New User -
The voltage on the fuse is less than 1 volt when the key is on. on both sides. There is 12 volts on the connector to the switch

New User Asked -
blower fan does not work, if power applied directly to the fan it runs, but will not operate when connected to system
Roger -
Hello, Are you satisfied all fuses are good?
Roger
New User -
Hello, yes all fuses are good, I'm measuring 12v. at the connector at the fan connector on the vehicle side, but when i plug the fan in the voltage drops to zero.
Roger -
Power is sent to the blower motor from the ignition switch when turned on.
What the fan speed switch does is provide ground for the motor by selecting which combination of resistors is needed to deliver the fan speed selected.
Have you located the resistor pack on the HVAC Case near the blower motor? Power goes through the resistor pack AFTER going through the blower motor.
If you are not getting any fan speed at all check for power arriving at the resistor pack on terminal #2 Dk/Blu wire when the key is on. Check for power leaving the resistor pack on the terminal #1 Blk/Tan wire.
What did you find? Both wires should have battery voltage.
Need a wiring diagram? Please advise your email address.
Roger
Roger -
I'll check back in the morning to see how you are doing. It's bed time in my zip code.
Roger
New User -
Hi Roger, sorry about that, had to leave in a hurry to deal with a problem.
I'm not measuring any voltage on either terminal of the resistor block

Thanks Roger, will let you know how I make out, will be looking at it again a noon.
Garth
New User -
Hi Roger, there's power on pin 2 going into the resistor block, but no voltafe on pin one.
I presume that that means that the blockis shot?
Garth
Roger -
I believe you are correct. If the high speed fan were selected the voltages passes through the resistor block without going through a single resistor as drawn in your diagram. Pin 2 to pin 1 and on to ground through the fan speed switch...
A new resistor block should put you back in business. Good work Garth!

New User Asked -
The headlights & taillights &interior light will not come on and there is power to the switch.
Douglas -
The switch itself may be dead then. Pull the dimmer switch in (flash to pass) and see if the headlights come on?
New User -
By flipping the dimmer switch nothing happens. There are 8 different wires on the swith itself that have power to them.some of them lose power when you turn the switch to the park light setting and some that lose power in headlight mode. Does this switch work as a grounding switch or is it a power switch.
Douglas -
You can flip the switch from high to low beam, or pull on the switch for "flash to pass". This bypasses the headlight switch and the lights will work if the switch is the problem. I'm not sure if I was clear enough on the flash to pass description.
Also check to see if the relay is okay (power distribution box).
Do the intermittent wipers work?
New User -
I Tried A different light switch and it still won't do anything. I put the switch in a different truck and it worked just fine. Do you know where the out shut off switch is at on this truck. It is the one that shot the lights off if their left on and the ignition is shut off. or do you think it is that.
Douglas -
Do the intermittent wipers work?
Dodges of this era are known for problems with the CTM (central timer module), which can be corrosion/pin damage at the electrical connector or the CTM itself.
New User -
No the intermitten wipers do not work. do you know where the module is located?
Douglas -
Lower drivers side of dash, mounted behind lower kick panel. You should be able to quickly find an image of the CTM on Ebay.

1. Blower only works on High. (Resistor, right)?
2. Also, though, the vent controls don't switch (vent, heater, defrost, etc.)
I can smell the lightest of burnt electrical smells...
heavychevy -
Hello
Your right on the blower. The vent control may be burnt I would just switch the whole panel out. The easiest and cheapest way is to get one from auto salvage. It makes for a great do it yourself job.
Heavychevy
allfalldown -
I can do the resister - that's easy.
The dash though, I'm a hack when it comes to this - how much of the dash needs to come off to get to that controller? It is at the bottom of the dash, so I imagine it is easier than some.
heavychevy -
usually the whole middle section such as the radio and ash tray area. The hard part is tring to get the trimmig off without damaging it.
Douglas -
If you leave your email address I'll send you a great link for troubleshooting and repairing (with diagrams, etc) your Dakota.

I'm mainly interested in the plastic and fasteners around the control unit so I don't ruin my girlfriend's truck!!
IT SEEMS THAT WHEN I PUT IT 4X4 I HEAR A GRINDING,BUT NOT CON TINUOS.NOW I GET A GRINDING IN 2 WEHEEL DRIVE BUT NOT ALL THE TIME, NOT WHEN I TURN,MOSTLY AT LOWER SPEEDS. IT IS ON THE DRIVERS SIDE FRONT.THEE U JOINTS LOOK GOOD.FLUIDS ARE UP,BUT HAVENT BEEN CHANGED 120K..????
New User - Douglas -
Hello,
Was the grinding when put in 4x4 during engagement OR after engagement while driving?
Do you think the noise you hear now is the same?
New User -
IT WAS AFTER ENGAGMENT, THE SOUND IS A LITTLE DIFFERENT.
New User -
I HIT OKAY AN ERROR,CAN WE CONTINUE
Douglas -
Okay the first thing I want you to check the brakes, wheel bearing, etc on the front drivers side. Make sure the noise is not coming from here before we move onto the 4X4 system. Also make sure the engine/etc mounts are okay. Thoroughly inspect the c/v joint for play or signs of damage. Give me an update and we'll continue as necessary.
INEED TO PUT BACK THE DRIVESHAFT THAT GOES BETWEEN
THE FRT DIFF AND THE XFER CASE.THE OLD ONE I WAS ABLE TO PULL OUT ,IT WAS IN BAD SHAPE.BUT THE NEW ONE NEEDS ABOUT AN1/8 INCH TO GO IN,HOW CAN I GET THE ROOM I NEED EASY...TKS
New User - Roger -
Hello, Jack the vehicle and let the front axle hang free. The front suspension is the farthest distance from the transfer case when the truck is "airborne".
Are you certain the part is the correct replacement?
Roger
New User -
THE OLD DRIVESHAFT LOOKED STRANGE AND DID NOT HAVE
A YOKE OR UJ THAT ATTACES TO THE XFER CASE.WHEN I ORDERD THE NEW ONE IT HAS U JOINT ON BOTH SIDES. ALSO THIS IS FOR A MANUAL TRANS.
Roger -
What is your email address please? I want to send you a drawing to see if your new driveshaft looks like the one in the pic.
When I send the email you may have to check inbox and junk/spam to find it. Subject line will be Dakota.

New User -
THIS IS WHAT MY ORIGINAL DRIVESHAFT LOOKED LLIKE.
SO I ORDED THIS ONE AND IT WAS 2 INCHES TO LONG
AND WAS FOR A AUTO TRANS.SO I ORDERED THE OTHER ONE
FOR A MANUAL AND IT HAS U JOINTS ON BOTH END.ALL
THE HOLES LINE UP FRONT AND BACK
Roger -
There is no pic for me to see and compare to your description of the parts.
Will the correct driveshaft fit in place with the suspension hanging free as previously described?
Are you using new parts? Remanufactured? Used/salvage?
Roger
New User -
THIS IS A REMANUFACTURED AND ALL I NEED IS 1/8
OF INCH TO INSATLL,IF JACKING THE FRONT END WILL
GIVE ME THAT WILL BE IN FAT CITY
2000 Dodge Dakota Quad Cab Pick-up Electrical / Lighting Systems Dimming Happens always No pattern
New User Asked -
one head light dim all the time when the other works just fine . changed out combo switch no luck.
Roger -
Hi, A dim headlight (that is known to be a good one) most often in my experience has a bad ground connection either at the connector to the bulb or at the body of the vehicle.
A bad ground lowers the voltage to the bulb and it works at reduced intensity.
I just installed a new electric fuel pump in a 2000 Dakota with the 24 gallon tank (4.7L, 4x4, quad cab). Now I can't get the quick-connect between the fuel line and the pump to seal. I think the problem is the o-rings and plastic clip that go inside the connector (either they are bad or I'm inserting them in wrong).
Can you provide either
(a) info on the proper order for the o-rings and spacers?
(b) advice on replacing the quick connect with standard high-pressure line and clamps?
lot12bass -
A lot of people will accidentally try to put the plastic piece in backwards. Make sure it's facing the correct way and make sure there's no broken pieces of plastic inside the quick-connect.
New User -
When I originally disconnected the line the o-rings and spacers fell out, so I don't know what the original arrangement was.
The pieces include two o-rings, one small spacer about the same size as the o-rings, and one larger spacer with a faceted front.
There is also a retaining clip that stays on the metal
fuel barb coming out of the pump assembly. No question on how that should be oriented.
I checked in the subscription version of AllData, plus in the Haynes manual. Neither shows this conector.
Sterlingfixer -
Yes, I did one of these on Friday. Deepest into the plactic housing goes an O-ring. Next comes the thin spacer and another O-ring. Lastly is the longer spacer with the beveled end pointed out to make insertion of the tube easier. Make sure the long spacer is inserted far enough to be flush with rim of the housing. You can remove the retaining clip from the pump assembly and test fit it into the fuel line housing.

The cruise contrl all of a sudden stopped working one day and the fuse is still good. What do you think the problem is and where is the servo motor located?
Roger -
Hello, What engine and transmission please?
The cruise servo is under the hood and easily located by following the throttle cables away from the throttle body. One of the cables will curve and become almost horizontal on it's way to the servo mounted on an inner fender.
Roger
New User -
It is the V-8 engine with an automatic transmission.
Roger -
Okay, thanks! That rules out a clutch switch.
Will lifting the brake pedal with your toe allow you to set the cruise? The brake light switch might be out of adjustment.
Has the cruise throttle cable disconnected from the throttle body?
