1987 Dodge Omni America Fuel System Malfunction Happens always No pattern

When I start my 1987 Omni, the engine runs at about 2000 rpm. Usually it stays there, when not in gear. Sometimes, if I stomp the gas, it will idle normally, around 1000. A few times, I've stopped the car after it has been running at 2000, and then started it again, and it will idle around 900rpm, threatening to stall when I put it in gear. Help, I'm stumped.

The idle speed is controlled by the computer. Either the computer is receiving a wrong signal from the coolant temp sensor, or sending the wrong signal to the idle speed control, or more likely a bad idle speed motor.

How can I go about figuring out which scenario you presented, is the actual problem?

It requires a scanner to tell for sure, but it is about 90% the idle control motor or connections and about 5% computer and 5% coolant sensor.

Try inspecting the connections at the idle control motor and make sure they are clean and tight. See that the wires are not cut or frayed.

The idle control motor is on the side of the throttle body. It has a connector with 4 pins. I can provide the parts if you desire.

Which engine do you have? Is the 8th digit a C, E, or 8?

8th digit of VIN? It's a C.

OK, I was giving details for the other engine. Yours has a carburetor and what I said does not apply.

Probably the choke is not working, or needs adjustment. Read your repair manual on the procedures, it is more involved than what I can spell out here.
