1989 Ford 300 Fuel System

New User Asked -
I have a 1989 Ford Bronco, the in line fuel pump will not shut off. What do I need to do?

Sterlingfixer -
Sounds like a stuck fuel pump relay. Find the fuel pump relay and remove it. The pump should shut off. Swap another matching relay in its place. If it stays off, the relay is the problem. If it runs with a different relay, then the signal wire between the computer and the relay is shorted to ground.

1981 Ford 300 Engine Making Noise Happens always Always

New User Asked -
I got a f150 300 that runs great and it was given to me and ever since i got it it has a very slight pinging noise.. the truck Runs great.. I did an oil change and then had to replace pump(which i think may have been bad)the reason i say that is because while replacing the pump the old filter which had about 50 miles on it was filled with choke cherry pits from a tree and i am guessing from a mouse i seen running around inside the interior right after i got the truck...i replaced the pump and found the same thing in the oil pan..cleaned it out replaced the pump..still has a pinging noise so i changed the oil and filter again and this time went with a 15/40 oil and when i replaced the filter again more cherry pits plugging holes in filter...my question is how do i clean this out and do you think the bearings are bad(there was no metal shavings in the oil pan just choke cherry pits....any suggestions you can give would be great the truck has 87,000 miles and i am at my wits end...please help!

Roger -
Hello, When you say pinging noise are you describing a tapping sound from the lifters, or, a fuel ping on light acceleration?

This sounds like one of the few times I would recommend a power flush of the oil system. It is done without the drain plug or the oil filter installed and shoul get that junk out of the PRESSURIZED route and hopefully wash from cascade effect the remaining residue from the crancase. It may take more than once to satisfy your hopes.

I retired from a GM dealership service dept. We had a system that did very well at flushing out an engine. A dealership, or, an independant shop with some serious diagnostic equipment investments would be the place to look for this service. We charged $99.00 for the service.

I doubt any bearings have been damaged in your engine though the lifters may be starving for some oil. Since a flush as I have talked about will use a heated solution and a backflush flow procedure, it should unseat a blockage and allow oil to be pumped to the right places on restart with fresh oil. Lifters that are "down" can take up to 20 minutes at idle rpm to quiet down and refill their oil supply.

Your thoughts?,

Roger

New User -
can i do this flush myself and if so what do you reccommend to use?

Roger -
No, not the kind of flush I'm talking about. The machine hooks up to air pressure, has a heater in it to heat the 10W oil/solvent solution and when connected to the engine will backflush 12 gallons of fluid through the engine over about 3 minutes of time. The fluid cycles through the engine as a flow that is constantly filtered through a cartridge (used only once) and fully recovered back into the flushing machine. The cartridge will show what came out of the engine. It is a white filter similar to what a drinking water filtration system would use. The machine itself is large in size and is on casters for manuverability under a vehicle on a lift. It remains plugged in to electricity 24/7 to keep the fluid hot and effective for use.

The engine flush is often a preventive maintenance suggestion that many of our customers chose to do every 30K miles even on cars they bought brand new and had full control of the car's maintenance history of events. I felt this to be a bit of overkill when you have been faithful to oil & filter change scheduled maintenance. They knew their engine to be clean and maintained. Some just felt comfortable with the concept. Some wouldn't buy it if it were offered free on a car they'd had for many years.

I flushed my engines when I bought a car I didn't know much about the care history.

Satisfaction results varied as widely as the customer base with all their ideas/beliefs on when to do what and why...
