When we drive a very loud grinding noise comes from the rear left quadrant, I mainly notice it while the back driver's wheel is moving. What could it be?

Douglas -
Hello,

Does the sound change if you touch/apply the brakes?

At which speeds does it occur?

New User -
help

Bruce Kit -
Either pinion bearings and/or ring and pinyion itself. If I were tearing down a rear, I would replace all the bearings and seals and check the preload on the ring and pinion, if it checked out ok.

New User -
I dont have the resources to do it myself where should I have this done. The dealer will probley cost alot and about how much would this cost high amount and low amount thankyou very much

Bruce Kit -
Try phoning a few rear end shops for an estimate (in the phone book) The rates vary in different locations.Dealers are expensive.

1996 Ford Cobra Electrical / Lighting Systems Malfunction Happens always Always

New User Asked -
The 15amp fuse which works the convertable top, turn signals and other systems keeps buring out. When the fuse is replaced, everything seems work fine, but only for a few minutes. There has not been any changes or modifications to the car at all. What can I look for to solve the problem? Thank you.

Douglas -
These can be some of the toughest problems to isolate. What you need to do is disconnect components on the circuit (whatever you lose when the fuse blows) one by one and to isolate which one stops blowing the fuse. The other option is to disconnect all of them and plug them back in one at a time. This information is assuming the fuse blows before actually using a component (IE- such as only blows when using the turn signals, etc).

I just took my car to the dealer and had the clutch replaced. The car is now making a high pitched whistling or squealing sound (almost like belt noise) when the clutch is engaged (i.e., pedal not depressed). The dealer installed a new pilot bearing and a King Cobra clutch kit that I had purchsed. The cutch is connected to my TREMEC TKO 500 transmission, which I have used without problem for over 45,000 miles.

I do not think that it is the throw out bearing beacuse it seems that the sound would occur with the clutch disengaged from the flywheel at that point in time. I do not know what that sound is and will be taking the car back in soon to have it looked at. Could it be the new pilot bearing? Something else?

Roger -
Hello, I agree with you. The throwout bearing should be doing nothing when the clutch is engaged.

Did they replace the pilot bearing in the flywheel?

Roger

New User -
On my work order/receipt it says "replaced pilot bearing with our part." Could it be possible that they did not install that part correctly, that it may need to be lubed up, or maybe that part is defective?

Roger -
Yes, the bearing could have an installation or a material defect. I think you should demand a recheck under warranty. You have paid their price and they should stand behind the job.

The correct pilot shaft bearing/bushing can be determined with a micrometer and a specification sheet. Yours may be too small. They won't know unless it gets inspected for heat spots (in my opinion).

All said I would expect the shop would check to see the clutch is properly adjusted so there is no static load on the throwout bearing.

1994 Ford Cobra Engine

New User Asked -
I am inquiring about a tailpipe backfire from my'94 Mustang Cobra, 5 speed, 5.0 liter with 33K miles. I recently installed new headers, high flow cats and catback exhaust made by Pypes. Car ran super for a couple of weeks. I got on it hard one day, and shortly thereafter I noticed a small tailpipe backfire, but dismissed any problem since it didn't do it again. A few days later, my daughter took the car to work, and filled it with high test gas, and the car sat for three days. When I went to drive it, I immediately knew something was wrong. The car seemed to lope at low speed and have a "trailer towing" effect. Next it started to backfire loudly from the tailpipe (couldn't distinguish which side or if both sides), and by the time I got back to my garage it was backfiring at idle. I added dry gas and changed the fuel filter. Car has good power when going through the gears, and may backfire between gears, but still isn't right. No MIL indicating anything on dash. Didn't check timing yet, blanked off EGR, but still have intermittent backfire.

Douglas -
Do check timing and cylinder compression. Let me know the results and we'll go from there.

New User -
BASE TIMING @10 DEGREES BTDC AS RECOMMENDED. COMPRESSION GOOD IN ALL CYLINDERS. CAPPED EGR, AND ELIMINATED EXHAUST BACKFIRE, BUT RUNS LIKE THERE IS A CROSSED PLUG WIRE, BUT THERE ISN'T.

1994 Ford Cobra Drive Train / Driveline

New User Asked -
i have a 1994 cobra and whenever i hit a bump i hear a loud grinding sound coming from the middle/back of the car. the car is lowered. i replaced the tranny mount and it still does it. i had a driveshaft loop so i figured maybe it was rubbing that so i took that out too and it didnt fix the problem. once in a great while if i really stomp on it i will hear it then too. is this a case of bad u-joints or driveshaft? what do you think?

Bruce Kit -
Might be exhaust touching the driveshaft (look for marks on driveshaft)
Might be pinion bearing on differential.Try supporting car with axle stands under rear axle. Start, put in gear, and take a peak under the car when it is runing. Be carefull!
Might be car 'twisting' a little and exhaust or e brake cable touching driveshaft

New User -
so what can i do to resolve this issue? i did notice the e-brake cable looks like its been getting rubbed against

Bruce Kit -
See if it requires adjustment or perhaps it has just come off one of the guides. Do you use ebrake often? You might try temporarily tying it away from the driveshaft and see if problem clears up. Then you are on the right track.
