1998 Ford Station Wagon Engine

Onth9one Asked -
Makes a loud knocking noise when started. After about 5 minutes. The motor acts like it locks up. There is full oil on stick and in pan. Could it be oil pump?

Sterlingfixer -
Is your oil pressure warning light working? When you first turn on the key, the light should come on until the engine is started. It should turn off almost immediately and stay off as long as the engine is running.

The symptoms you describe sound very serious. A failed oil pump can cause an engine to knock, but the damage done is usually fatal. If you have oil pressure, you can remove and cut open the oil filter, looking for metal shavings. If here are many, look for another motor.

You could have a noise from an external component. Try removing the serpentine belt and seeing if the knock is still there. A loose torque converter bolt can also make a terrible knock. You may want to use a stethocope to pinpoint the source of the noise.
