I can not start 97 gmc 2.2 sonoma. I have installed new fuel pump, fuel regulator and have 42 psi fuel pressure. I have checked injectors with a noid light and they check ok. I have spark but I am not getting any fuel in the cylindars. Could my injectors be bad. I am getting fuel up tp the fuel rail.

Do you have compression in the cylinders?
If you don't have a compression gauge, spray a SMALL amount of carb cleaner into the throttle body. If the engine will start momentarily, it is not a compression problem. If it won't you'll need to check compression with a gauge.
Could the injectors be plugged? Yes, but not likely they'd all plug at once.

I do not have a compression gauge. I have allready tried using starting fluid to no avail. I was driving the truck at 60mph when it quit with no noise what ever. I do not know if it matters, but the truck has been sitting with out starting since 12/23/06. I only have 60,000 miles on it.

If the engine will not start with fuel added (starting fluid in this case) it is time for a compression check. Autozone and Advance Auto have a Tool Loaner Program, call ahead and see if they offer a compression gauge. If not they don't cost a whole lot.

After many tries I checked the compression and I get a reading of 120 psi. I realize now that I should of took this to a shop, but I am at the place of trying to do this myself now. I have consukted with many friends and getting different advise from them all. One question, Could this be a bad chip in the PCM? Any help you can give to be will be greatly received.

Is the check engine light coming on as it normally does when you turn the key on?
Most autozone stores will "LOAN" you a code reader, so you can check to see if there are any diagnostic codes in the PCM that may be pointing to the problem.
Have you checked for spark to all cylinders, as well as injector fire?
New User -
I HAVE A SCAN DEVICE HOOKED UP AND NO TROULBLE CODES APPEAR. The check engine soon light comes on as normal when I try to start it. There is spark in two of the cylandars I have checked. This truck has not even poped once while trying to start.

Smell the engine oil for signs of gasoline.
Pull a spark plug or two and see if they are wet.
If you have timed spark the engine should of start with carb cleaner, unless the engine is flooded or there is a severe exhaust restriction-- this notes we have cylinder compression (so valve timing should be okay).

I pulled the oil dip stick and I do smell gasoline on it. I also had a third party smell it and they too said it smelled of gasoline. The level on the stick is at the full mark. What is this telling us?
Douglas -
That the engine has flooded, and may still be experiencing a flooding conditon. Check for strong spark at all plugs and get back to me. Pull the spark plugs and see if they smell of gasoline.

PLUGS SMELL OF GAS BUT ARE NOT WET. aLL SPARK AND ALL HAVE BEEN REPLACED BY NEW ONES. STILL, SHOULD NOT OF THE MOTOR AT LEAST POPED ONCE? AFTER GRINDING FOR A LONG TIME SHOULD NOT THEY BE WET WITH GAS?

Squirt a small amount of oil in the cylinders and wait half an hour. See if it will start now with the assistance of carb cleaner sprayed in the throttle body.
If this doesn't work, remove an Oxygen sensor (BEFORE the catalytic converter) and see if it will start. This will check for restricted exhaust. Just for test purposes, don't continue to run the engine like this if it starts. Note- This will/should set a trouble code that can be ignored.
I can't get the dash fuel gage to work. It is locked on 1/2. I have had the pump out and bench tested it, and can get continuity when physicly moving the float. I ran a new ground and took direct power to the pink 19g wire on the pin harness. Can the sending unit be replaced or the whole fule pump.
Tks Mark

Hello, Your parts supplier should be able to tell you if the sending unit can be bought seperately from the pump. In 1991 model instances I believe it can.
There is a tester that when connected to the trucks wire harness connector for the fuel sending unit can verify the gauge operation at "Empty, Half, and Full" positions. Ask around and see where you might borrow/rent one so you can verify which part you need.
You may also have luck monitoring the sending unit's output terminals for different resistance values (sending unit removed from the vehicle) to see the values change as you move the float through it's range of movement.
I am back and need help.I need to re set the timing...2.5 what is TDC, I have all plugs out, #1 cyl. and #4 are at the top,the notch is pointing at the timing mark, and the rotor is pointing at #1 plug wire on the cap..won't start. If I pull the distributor (new)back out and start again from scratch what am I looking for at each cyl location, rotor and timing marks. Hope you can walk me through the retimeing of this motor.
Thanks Mark (grrrrrrrrrrrrr)

It sounds like you are right on track
as far as the distributer is concerned at
TDC[top dead center]your points should be at the specified gap for release of a spark to the cylinder for combustion the intake and exhaust valves are closed at #1 TDC it is the compression stroke
I hope this helps
New User -
Ok but if it does not start, am I on a exhaust stroke rather than a combustion stroke if so/ornot how can I tell??
macconeck -
the only way of telling is if you could get the codes from the computer
are you sure you hav a spark?
