My remote control to open the doors want open . I brought a new battery for it. A 12 volt. Do you think Ineed to get it program by the dealer.

Unfortunately, yes you have to take it back to the dealership. The good part is this service should be free of charge to you. Dont let them attempt to sell you another battery.. I am sure they will. AL

When pulling a spark plug, the spark is minimal. Not enough to start or keep engine running. Tracing backwards, coil or modual that spark plug wires are attatched to have two electrical connections, one to 1-2 and one to 3-4. When starting, these volt out at 1.8 - 2.2 VDC. Where do I go next?
Sterlingfixer -
First, are all 4 wires giving the same result?
The voltage reading you took sounds like a proper reading. If your input is good and the output is bad, you will need a new coil. The signal comes from the computer in the form of a square wave.
Make sure the ground on the coil is good and that the power wire has 12v while cranking.
My Elantra 2001 is idling too high, it stays at 3000 RPM, all the time. This started happening shortly after I changed the O2 sensor, don't think it's associated per it ran fine for 3 days after the sesor was changed. I also had to unplug the door open chime per it was active constantly even if the door was closed.

I will assume the check engine light is coming on. This will mean a trouble code is stored in the PCM (computer). Advance Auto and AutoZone stores will access the codes free of charge. Have these check and let me know which alphanumeric codes they fine, EG- P0400, P0501, etc.
Aside from a trouble code pointing to the problem, there are two main causes of high idle. One is a vacuum leak. Two is the idle air control (aka idle speed) motor sticking open.
It is possible the throttle linkage (or blade inside the throttle body) is binding and holding the throttle partially open. Doesn't happen very often but shouldn't be overlooked.

car was missing, losing speed going up hill. Took to mech. Said 1 of the coils was bad. Needed new wires, coil, cap, plugs. Milage is 71,000. Could this be so???
Falkeneiz -
Yes it is very possible . Spark plugs are part of your routine maint. and should have been replaced at 60000 mi. the reat of the parts well it all depends on what shape it is in ... if the coil or wires have corrosion on the tips to prevent ignition fire then yes they should also be replaced.

Main concern was, mech. said there are 2 coils, only one is bad. does this car have 2 coils??? Thanks
Falkeneiz -
If I remember the car correctly you do have 2 coils... it is called DIS ignition
(Distributorless Ignition) And if you do Have DIS then you shouldnt have a dist cap much less a distributor. I am not sure when Hyundai went to DIS but it should be around the 99-00 model year. Your coils should be mounted on top of your valve cover where you can see them... if nothing else ask the mech that said you needed them to show you why and where. Good luck

How do I remove the ignition key cylinder from my 2000 Hyundai Elantra?
Roger -
Hi, Are you okay with working on an air bag steering column? Do you have the tools?
Please advise,
Roger
earlhar5 -
Yes the air bag has been removed.
Roger -
Unless the cylinder turns, you won't be able to remove the cylinder itself. If you can get the cylinder to turn, remove the steering column covers, turn the lock to the "on" position, depress the pin locking the cylinder into the housing, and pull the cylinder out while holding the pin in.
If the cylinder won't turn, you'll need to replace the entire steering lock housing assembly. To do this, you'll either need to unscrew the tamper-proof bolts with a hammer and punch, or you'll need to break or cut the housing to get it off the steering column.
Roger
earlhar5 -
The cylinder does turn but where is the pin locking the cylinder into the housing?
Roger -
There should be a small hole or slot visible on the cylinder housing. It is through this opening that one will use a pin or punch to depress the retainer pin down to allow the cylinder to pull out.
Roger
earlhar5 -
That is the problem I can't find the pin to release the cylinder
Roger -
All right. You may want to call a locksmith to see if he has a way to release the lock cylinder without having to remove the housing assembly.
When I called our local Hyundai Service Department they told me that they call a locksmith!

I bought a 1999 Hyundai Elantra which had no radio in it.
I've tried several Hyundai radios from junk yards. Each time I plug them in, they light up as if they are getting power.
However the display is blank and the radio will not work. Have any idea what might be wrong?
Thanks.

I checked all the fuses. They look fine. Still just get a blank in the radio digital read-out window.

Does the link I gave you below have wiring diagrams for the radio? This will show which wires should have power and ground.
Also use the link to check TSB's on your car. These may contain information on the subject.

New User Asked -
The other day, I used my 4 way flashers while driving the car. When I turned the car off, it will not start. Won't even turn over, no sound from the battery, only an initial bump. I have no brake lights, turning signals, or 4 way flashers. The key signal comes on, but when I push the brake pedal, it goes off, when I release it, it goes back on. The car is not stuck in "Park" and I can't get it into any other position. I've changed the battery and cleaned the battery cables. Finding no change in the problem. It's just dead. The fan will come on sometimes and the radio lights when I turn it on, but the numbers do not illuminate nor do I get any sound. Do you have any other suggestions as to what I should check?
Douglas -
It clearly sounds like a dead battery. The battery is new AND fully charged? If yes move on to the battery cables and engine and chassis grounds. Take them apart and clean/replace as necessary.
New User -
Do you have any other suggestions? I have replaced both battery cables and checked all grounds and it still doesn't turn over. I don't understand how it could be running fine and with a turn of the key, I get nothing. I even tried jumping the car before I bought the new battery, with no success. Not even a glimmer of hope. Please advise.
Douglas -
Okay, it would be easiest if you access the following site from the manufacturer. The site has the same information the dealers have on service and repair (Hyundai is the only carmaker that offers this service). You'll have to systematically check for power to find out where you are losing it.
www.hmaservice.com
BTW, you'll first have to register before you can access the service information.
The car used to idle a little rough, I've only had it a couple of months. 95,000 original miles. Water pump went out and car overheated badly. I replaced water pump and timing belt. Car starts and runs fine going down the road but idles low, and will die at a stop while in gear. It will idle in park but so low that if I turn on the AC it will die. No water detected in the crankcase or oil in the radiator. I am getting a check engine light but when I try to scan the OBDII system the vehicle does not respond. Any help would be appreciated.
Douglas -
Have you tried visiting an Advance Auto or Autozone and having them check the codes? They do this service free of charge.
It is possible you have a blown fuse. But your scanner might not work with your car.
New User -
my scanner has been used on the car before and worked fine.
Trans is hitting neutral when time to shift to high or overdrive, and sometimes when you stop it's like you hit neutral. When I turn off elec. overdrive it seems to almost work right. Also the airbag light comes on every 6-12 months and they charge $95 to reset. Mech. told me all he had to do was reset it but wouldn't tell me how or where.
Thanks,
Kevin

Bookmark this site, it's directly from hyundai so the information is as good as it gets. Hyundai provides complete service info free, while most car companies charge.
Try disconnecting the negative battery cable for a minute to reset the airbag light. You can find all kinds of info on the site I gave about your airbag. Keep in mind airbags are an explosive, and most troubleshooting should be left to those with proper training.
New User -
There is no reset in the system on either the sensor or indicator side? I have tried the neg. terminal trick a few times to reset the computer. Don't recall whether I did it for the airbag. Any specific ideas on the tranny? Looking for a point in the right direction,
Kevin
The car has a very rough idle,it stops at any stopping attempt.I have had the fuel pump replaced, plugs and a the MAF sensor replaced but no improvement.
The car shakes rigourously when i try to put on the A/C and the last time i changed the oil(this i do every 3 months) i noticed that it was really black...the mechanic said i may need a new brain box...is this true?.
Bruce Kit -
It is possible that you do,the car appears to be running too rich air/fuel mixture and that is contrulled by the computer.I am guessing that your plugs were also blacker than usual too.

Hi:
Sounds like the crankshaft sensor went out. There is no actual test to it other then replacing it. Good Luck Les.
New User -
Thank you for replying.Would this sensor cause other problems also?In the begining the car ran great, then it stumbled and finally died. There is no test? Where abouts is the sensor located?I am not familiar with Hyundais',I am an ASE Master tech but have not,nor do I have any information to this vehicle.thanks again hope to hear from you soon

Les -
Hi;
It should be located at the front of the crankshaft. If you look down the front of the crankshaft it should be located at the left hand side of the engine. Good Luck Les.

Hello,
I've re-opened this question at the customer's request.
Mark,

Sterlingfixer -
With your technical background, you can use Hyundai's site for information.
http://www.hmaservice.com/webtech/default.asp
Enter the year and model. Search for ignition, and there is a good wiring diagram.
You will see that the coil is controlled by an ignitor (power transistor) which is driven by the ECM. The ECM picks its signals from the crank sensor. The crank sensor grounds the 5v signal coming from the computer (yellow for TDC, green for crank) The ECM sends 4v/ground to the transistor on the brown and white/black wires. The transistor grounds the coil with the green/blue and green/white wires. Look for a bad computer, not giving its base voltage signal to the sensor or transistor.
Sure this will help.
