Car loses power stops. Starts after several attempts. Hard to start after stopped for while. Dash lights and info flicker and single click sound at back of dash.
Roger -
Hi, have you had the battery checked for a dead cell? Connections free of corrosion and tight? Alternator ok? Sounds like low voltage could be the issue.
Roger
New User -
Hi Roger, the day after I sent question the car wouldn't start at all. Got the Auto Club guy (RACQ in Qld Australia) to come and he diagnosed module at back of ignition switch where key goes in was faulty. Had that replaced and all is well. Thanks for your help and I'm sure would have reached same conclusion with further questioning and answers. Thanks for the service.
Regards,
Brian Christensen

AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE WILL NOT ENGAGE OVERDRIVE (4TH GEAR)
DESCRIPTION:
This bulletin describes three (3) possible conditions which can exist when a vehicle, equipped with an automatic transaxle, will not engage overdrive (4th gear). The procedures listed below describe each of the conditions and the methods of diagnosing / repairing the vehicle.
DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES:
CONDITION 1:
Transaxle shifts properly through all other gears (1st, 2nd, 3rd) but slips in 4th gear:
DIAGNOSIS / REPAIR:
Disengage (turn-off) overdrive. If transaxle operates normally in 3rd gear proceed to the next step.
Road test the vehicle with the Automatic Transaxle Tester, SST # J39853, connected. Using the manual gear selector, command shifts 1st, 2nd, 3rd And 4th. If transaxle slips or fails to engage 4th gear, replace the end clutch.
If transaxle shifts normally through all gears and does not slip,
check the wiring and/or Transmission Control Module.
CONDITION 2:
Transaxle shifts properly through all other gears (1st, 2nd, 3rd) but will not engage 4th gear (remains in 3rd):
DIAGNOSIS / REPAIR:
Connect HDS Scan Tool SST # J41490 and turn ignition switch to "On" position. Select appropriate vehicle then select "Transaxle." From the "Codes and Data" menu, select "Data." Manually operate the overdrive switch and read "OD SW" on scan tool. If the overdrive switch is not working properly, replace the switch.
If by replacing the overdrive switch the condition is not corrected, check the wiring and/or Transmission Control Module.
CONDITION 3:
While driving at a steady speed in 4th gear the vehicle downshifts to 3rd or 2nd gear:
DIAGNOSIS / REPAIR:
Test the oil temperature sensor as indicated in TSB #'s96-40-001 or 96-40-009. If oil temperature sensor is not within specification, replace the sensor.
If by replacing the oil temperature sensor the condition is not corrected, check the wiring and/or Transmission Control Module.

The transmission won't go into overdrive when I first asked for advice. Now it won't go into third and it won't go into reverse all the time. I can get it into reverse if I turn the engine off and restart. It will then go into reverse if I don't put into a forward gear first.
Engine loses power when I need to accelerate hard, I've replaced the fuel filter, plugs, wires, cap, rotor, has fine fuel pressure, disconnected cat. converter, Tried a mass air flow no change. I am at my wits end and have no hair left. Please help. Steve
Bruce Kit -
I assume you changed airfilter.Has the timing belt been changed as routine maintenance? A stretched/worn one might cause the problem. Also if the timing belt tensioner is sticking, you might have a problem
New User -
Air filter new. Timing belt and tensioner just replaced, Rechecked marks still okay.
Bruce Kit -
Steve, before you pull out all your hair, you might get it scanned for codes, then fix it yourself. It might be a simple sensor, that is not turning on a check engine light.
New User -
First thing I did. No codes. Inspected all sensors for bad connections all like good.
Bruce Kit -
See if you can check if the timing belt was installed correctly. If the belt was out 1 tooth, it will run ok, but not ok under load.
New User -
Checked again marks right on.
Bruce Kit -
Take a sample of fuel, and see if water in it, common this time of the year.
New User -
Took sample of fuel and it looks normal. Drained entire tank. Filled with new same problem.
Bruce Kit -
Can you check if the cat converter is functioning ok, or if it is partially
plugged?
New User -
Converter is wide open. The muffler is too
Douglas -
Is the engine cutting out or just lagging?
By converter wide open, do you mean not restricted or hollowed out? If hollowed out, did it run okay for a lenght of time after hollowed out?
New User -
Not restricted
Douglas -
It is possible the injectors are partially plugged. Have you tried a professional cleaning service.
Also, have you looked at the ignition coil, wires, etc to make sure they are not arcing when the engine is revved? Be very careful around moving engine parts!
New User -
Dealer tested injectors and said working perfect. Coil, plugs, wires all new and not arcing
Douglas -
The throttle position (or angle) sensor and maf are the major sensors used on acceleration-- make sure both of these are okay and there are no vacuum leaks after the maf.
Did the dealer confirm that spark was not breaking down?
New User -
Tried new throttle position (or angle) sensor and maf no change, Dealer said no break down in spark
1993 Hyundai Excel Electrical / Lighting Systems Won't Start
New User Asked -
The enging turnsover but will not start. I have spark and fuel press to the injectors. Someone has tampered with the ECM wiring and I dont know how to rewire it or cant find a diagram. Also, all fuses are good.
Roger -
Hello, What engine, please?
Roger
New User -
1.5 Liter multi fuel injected. engine code g4aj
Roger -
Will you provide me an email address I may send the wiring diagram to please? Would a fax be better?
Thanks,
Roger
New User -
Roger,
You can send it to [redacted] , thanks.
Joe
Roger -
Thank you Joe. I'll get that coming to you!
Roger
Roger -
A two page email has been sent. One is a wiring schematic and the other a probable cause chart for ideas.
Thanks,
Roger
Roger -
What is happening here, please?
Roger
New User -
Roger,
Sorry I didn't get back to you, I am in the Navy and dont have much time. I dont think the ECM is bad and am still troubleshooting. I will send you everything I have done so far maybe you can help.
Joe
Roger -
Bring it on, sir! I'll give it a try.
Thank you for your service!

Ok Roger, here goes. Here is what I checked and found so far. The piece I thought was the ECM was a car alarm module the previous owner installed and was spliced into some wiring going to a relay under the driver side dash, I removed the alarm. The ECM appears to be intact and not tampered with. Two of the wires from this relay I belive go to the ingnition switch. Also, there is an orange wire coming from this relay which is not connected to anything and when I try to start the car it gets voltage, but I cant find anything that it may be connected to or where it is in the diagram. I also have continuity between the white wire going to the fusible link on the positive battery post and the car body, I assume it there is a short somewhere? I hooked up a spark tester and got no spark from any of the cylinders. I tested the ingnition coil and power transistor both were good. The rotor is new and the distributor cap is good condition. The timing is also good. I did test the CKP and got no voltage. Could this be the problem or just something not working because of these other issues? Maybe you can make heads or tails of this. Please ask any question and I will try to clarify, thanks.
Joe
Roger -
A car alarm basically interupts the ignition switch output to a starter relay or soleniod. When the alarm is tripped it of course makes alot of noise but it is not supposed to let the starter come on or a thief could drive away with the alarm sounding. This is done by the alarm module not energizing the relay you found. The ignition switched power to the starter is blocked.
Does the relay you see appear to be part of the alarm system? Remove and discard the relay. Reconnect the two biggest wires that are the same color code to restore the original circuit.
The CKP sensor generates ac milivolts when the engine is cranking. Have you tested for ac milivolts coming from the CKP during cranking? You should see from .1 vac to .5 vac. (100-500 milivolts ac) If you get zero ac volts the sensor is bad. Without sensor output feedback to the computer, the computer does not "know" the engine is turning over and won't pulse spark or fuel injectors.
Does this help at all?
Roger

My brother and I have a '91 Hyundai Excel that had no fuel pressure. After replacing the fuel pump, we have fuel pressure and we have always had spark, but the car still will not start. We inspected the ecu, but found no burn spots but we are still not getting injector pulse...what should we do next?
-
Check your injectors for corrosion, pull each one and inspect the wire harness and the injectors.
New User -
Is There A Injector Diod? I found A Burnt Wire In A Two Wire Harness To What Appears To Be a Diod?I Have Power Going In But None Comming Out.
-
replace the wire, check evaporative emission control system as well.
New User -
My question was not answered, is there an injector diod?
Douglas -
First things first, have you determined which part of injector pulse is missing? With one end of voltmeter to a known good ground check to see if you have Key ON positive voltage to the injector.
Where did you find the wires and which colors are they?
New User -
Yes I have key on voltage at the injector, The wires are black and black with a red stripe. The resistor is bolted to the plenumn chamber just above the injectors, The wires go into the injector harness. Im being told to replace the computer? Let me know what you think "please"
Thank You
Robert Fox
Douglas -
I'm not finding anything on a diode/resistor.
These computers normally seem to last, so I'd consider a used one. Computers are absolutely the hardest thing on a vehicle to confirm as bad (without trying another). Diagnostics can point to a bad computer when that is not the case.
Do unplug the TPS and check for injector pulse to make sure it is not in clear flood mode.
Two problems?
1/Engine cuts out when driving absolutly, very dangerous, nothing when ignition turned on. Two mechanics have looked and of course it run ok for both of them?.When, weeks later, it looked like a flat battery RACQ told us the battery had collapsed. The car seemed ok, but was not being used much.
2/ Car taken for short trips but then fails to start to come home. 1ST TIME THIS HAPPENED I TRIED TO START IT A FEW TIMES, it turns engine over fires once but sounds like no petrol. I called out the RACQ again, he tried a few times then held starter on for a longer time and it fired and run. Today I had a short run and stopped but it was the same problem again, I also held the starter on longer unti it fired?
A m talking about two problems or one?
Bruce Kit -
Might be 2 problems, but I am sure your mechanics are competant. Sometimes when you get excessive water in the petrol, you get hard starting or no start. After all water does not burn well!
Have your tech check computer systems with a scanner. A good tune up might help.
New User -
I am trusting the first problem has been the shorting cells in the battery, until it callapsed altogether.
The new second one is diff, is there a computer in excelbuilt dec 1990?
I can go out on a cold morning and start the car first time, if i take it for a run and leave it to get a paper, 5min and try to start turning over just not firing? ?IS there a baffle to stop petrol flowing back? if so could this get stuck? What is the carbo like on these cars, small well?
Bruce Kit -
Hyundais were noted for their simplicity and used carbs until the mid 90's Computers were not used until Fuel injection was introduced..No baffle in fuel system, but your carb might require a rebuild.
Check the operation of the carb choke mechanism.
Trying to replace a steering wheel on a 1987 hyundai excel. There is no airbag on this assembly. I am trying to figure out how to get the horn pad off without breaking anything.
Douglas -
There should be two screws on the backside... use the following links for a diagram and instructions-
