starter, battery, alternator have been replaced, but still car runs out of current. I noticed car moved very low on first gear and lights for oil, O2, battery, and all the red pilot lights in the dustboard were on.Then after parking the car for 3 hours,I started the engine again, it did not happen anymore...
Douglas -
When do you lose electrical power, when the vehicle is being driven (running) or after it has sat?
Is this really a 2007, in which case there should be a warranty.
New User -
this is a 1993 Isuzu trooper. Vehicle was losing electrical power while is being driven...That was why it was heavy or hard to run...One time after a traffic ligth stop, it did stop running...
New User -
let me clarify... there were several instances vehicle lost electrical power: 1. after parking it,engine couldn't start; 2. while driving, i could feel it was losing power 'coz no matter how much i stepped on the gas, it was moving very slow and all the red pilot lights in the dustboard were on; 3. after a brief stop for the traffic lights, the engine stopped running. it has to be towed by AAA...

Hello, Does the No Charge indicator on the instrument panel light up with the key on and the engine stopped?
Roger
New User -
no charge indicator on the instrument panel light up even when the engine is running...
Roger -
Have you verified fuse #C8 (15 amp) is good.
Sounds like your alternator is not charging the battery. Will it drive to an auto parts store? Often they will check your battery and alternator for free.
Even new parts have to be verified to be working or the repair is not complete.
Roger
New User -
alternator and battery are new...i already drove my car to my Vietnamese michanic...now he is checking all the wires for possible grounded once... after this, if the car still has problem, i will bring it to the local isuzu dealer for a DIAGNOSTIC TEST.if this can never be solved, i will bring this car to SALVATION ARMY for donation...
Roger -
Has the alternator been bench tested to be sure it works? It may have a problem even if it is new.
Roger
New User -
vehicle is already ok... i will give it a week or so.so long... thanks...
The CHECK light is flashing. No one in this town can tell us what it is. The owners manual says it's something to do with the torque on demand. One place was able to come up with codes but doesn't have the manual. The codes are 13 P-1735, 14 P-1731 and 24 P-1733. Can you tell me what this is? My e-mail address is nascarmema@aol.com. Thank!
Douglas -
I think these are speed sensor codes. Try clearing the code (disconnect the battery cables for ten minutes, then touch the cables together for a couple seconds- this drains any stored electricity and allow the computer to reset).
See if a reset helps with the problem. If the problem occurs again visit AutoZone or Advance Auto and they will check the codes free of charge. It would be nice to know if one particular code is coming back first, or if they all set at the same time. Even nicer if none of the codes appear again.
New User -
Thank you for your suggestion. We had already tried both AutoZone and Advance and they didn't get any codes. Another place gave us the codes. We have since traded it in on a new Ford truck. I know we can find a mechanic for that!
Thanks again
Douglas -
Which Ford truck did you buy?
New User -
F150 XLT 5.4 liter. It's awesome! drives like an expensive car.
Sir
Is there a sizing chart for the electrical cable connectors so a guy could say he needs a size xyz connector.
I need to buy a cable connector for my 2001 Trooper but cant fid it and don,t know what to call it?
Perplected. Jeff
macconeck -
what size engine do you have and where does the connector connect from or to
There is a standard but usually to large company or manufacturers
I may be able to assist you if you give me more information
New User -
My 2001 Isuzu trooper has a 3.5 L engine
and the connector is located directly below the drivers seat.
macconeck -
how many wires are in the connector and what colors are they
Can you tell what it is connected to?
Battery drained, because head lamps were left on. Now even after attempting to jump and replacing battery I still can't get anything to come on. What is the possible cause and the possible solution?
Sterlingfixer -
If by any chance the jumper cables were hooked up backwards, the fusible link may have blown. This is to protect the vehicle from the potential serious damage. Check the main fuses and fuse box under the hood. You should find your problem there.
My 1999 Trooper's headlights go on all by themselves. lights such as tail lights and side markers do not come on. I wake up to a dead battery. Any thoughts as to cause and remedy?
Bruce Kit -
Sounds like a daytime running light module.
You can temporarily disablr (untill repaired) by disconnecting battery in the evening or remove fuse.
New User -
As far as I know this vehicle does not have a daylight running light option.
Bruce Kit -
Expose the rear of the headlight so you can acess the wires.
Next time they come on by themselves, check the yellow wire and the yellow-red wires for current. If there is current at those connections, unplug switch. If lights go off, replace switch.
Isuzu headlights are grounded at the switch, so if they fail, the lights come on.
how do i change tha fuel pump and where is it located
Douglas -
The fuel pump is located in the gas tank. You must remove the gas tank to replace the pump. If you leave your email address I'll send more instructions with images.

I am looking at buying a 1998 trooper with 5speed and 122,000 miles.
This is my first trooper since a company car 15 years ago and I would like some input as to what issues may arise in the near and far future. Also, what should I look for as to warning signals when I test drive the vehicle, have only seen pis so far.
And anyone have a good idea of the value of this age of car (appears to be in quite good shape by pictures) since it is a private seller??
Thanks for any help
Ken
ksoutherland@highland.net
Douglas -
Hello,
Which engine does the vehicle have?
Also, 2 or 4 wheel drive?
One thing to consider with private sellers is you typically get no warranty, price isn't everthing.
New User -
It has a 3.5l V6 and is 4 wheel drive.
Thanks
Douglas -
These have problems with the intake manifold gaskets (vacuum leak) and the fuel tank sending unit (inaccurate gauge readings).
Make sure the engine doesn' burn oil, ask for a guarantee in writing at the last minute before you make your final decision.
On the test drive listen carefully for any noises (radio, heater fan, etc turned OFF) under all common driving scenarios:
Accelerating, decel, turn right, left, braking, etc (including combinations of the above). The steering and suspension should be firm without play, etc.
Note engine & transmission performance.
The engine should be cold (overnight) when you test drive the vehicle and hot when you are done.
Parts tend to be a little expensive on Isuzu's.
Use edmunds.com and kbb.com to get an idea of the value of the vehicle in your area (pay less than these prices because of higher repair costs).
Battery drains down after allowing vehicle to set without starting for 2-3 days. Have been disconnecting positive battery cable at night.
I suspect diode in alternator is bad.
heavychevy -
Sounds like a bad battery. Do you have a hood light on the Tropper it maight be staying on if nothing else is visible when you lock it up for the night.

I apologize for such a late response, but have had family, computer and weather
problems. The problem that I submitted is still in existence. but I have not been able to perform my part of the deal by investigating and testing some areas that should be basic.
What I still need to do is:
1) Remove the protective shield under the vehicle (1996 Trooper) and examine the battery cables (I noticed that the terminal ends are replacements and have been put on so tight that the terminal is distorted.)
2) I also noticed that the positive battery cable is extremely long, leaving lots of places for the cable to develop wear spots.
3) I also feel I need to pull the battery and have it checked for a bad cell
I originally asked the question because I learned that the alternator/generator has eight (8) diodes and that having a defective diode can drain the battery over time.
So I am at fault for impairing the progress of this inquiry. If I should cancel/close this problem, please let me know.
heavychevy -
Soory to hear of your misfortune. You are on the right track I would definitly replace the positive cable. As far as the alternater I would replace this does sound like it could be the problem area.

1994 Isuzu Trooper Electrical / Lighting Systems Malfunction Happens sometimes When warm
New User Asked -
I think I have an electrical problem, b/ce I was told my transmission is OK. While driving in stop-n-go traffic, engine lights light up on dash, then transmission seems to stay in second gear. If I put in neurtral or turn off engine and restart, it goes away. It seems like a safely mechanism not letting me accelerate out of second gear, after the dash board lights light up. Please help
Sterlingfixer -
Your truck has an electronically controlled transmission. When the transmission computer sees certain faults in the sensors, it locks the transmission in second gear. You will need to connect a computer to the truck to determine which sensor or circuit has the problem. When that problem is resolved, your tranmission should shift normally again.
New User -
Thank you for the response. Quick follow up: I am going to take this in to the dealership, but don't want to get ripped off. Is this a typical problem, and something that can be fixed without rebuilding or working on the transmission - in short, is this to say, this isn't a transmission issue, but an electrical issue. Finally, I have had problems with he electrical locks, and my radio malfunctioning - can the transmission computer be related to those other electrical items? Thanks in advance for your reply.
Sterlingfixer -
I do not believe the other electrical items are related to the transmission problem.
How expensive will it be? I do not know. Some of the potential electrical failures can be inside the transmission. Additionally, the same symptoms can occur if the computer notices the transmission slipping. However, since your problem occurs on local easier driving, I suspect it is purely electrical.
Typically such faults will cost $100-400. Much less than doing the whole transmission.

check your starter relay under the hood.on some models you have a anti theft code that you punch into tour radio .also check for an inline fuse on your hot wire running to your starter.the anti theft code should be on a card along with your owners manual.

I bought a 93 trooper and put in alot of new parts rebuilt top of engine, new oil pump, radiator, the list goes on. The oil pressure is very low my mechanic has been trying for two weeks to correct the problem,I spoke to someone at an auto part store they said it could be the power distribution relay on the alternator or the firewall, because i have been blowing some fuses also. Any advise
Roger -
Hello, No blown fuse will be connected to low oil pressure unless the fuse has to do with the gauges. If that were the case the gauge reading would not be believable.
With a new oil pump installed should you find low oil pressure there is a good chance the cam and crankshaft bearings are worn beyond limits.
Has your mechanic checked bearing wear?
Roger
Roger -
You released the question with no dialog with me. Was that your intention?
Please advise,
Roger
New User -
Yes he did check out.
I did call Isuzu and they told me that truck runs on very low pressure and that it almost starves the top of the motor. The thing is that I did not have low pressure before they rebuilt the engine.
New User -
sorry first time using this site, yes the question was for you
Roger -
You should have recourse with the installer of the oil pump. Surely the workmanship and parts are under warranty.
The process of replacing the oil pump is quite involved. It is not possible for me to see how well the mechanic followed the installation procedure. He could have blocked an oil port when applying sealant to the oil pump. New O ring seals are required for the oil pipe an the oil strainer. If cut during installation the pick up quantity of oil would be poor.
How would you like to procede? You should not have to bear the expense for additional repairs to cure a problem created by the mechanic. il pressure was fine before, right?
Roger
New User -
I have already given the mechanic 6K. I picked up the car Saturday I still owe him $900.I know he did something wrong but what who knows. Should I just bring the car to Isuzu? Also is it true about the oil pressure running low on these cars?
Roger -
I've searched and cannot find a technical service bulletin stating anything about oil pressure issues.
You told me it was Isuzu that told you of low oil pressure nearly starving the top of the motor....so I didn't call Isuzu.
I would not suggest you bring the car to Isuzu unless the mechanic who charged you will pay for the corrective repair. If anyone puts a wrench on your vehicle but the first mechanic I expect he will balk and void his warranty to you.
You may consider legal action if you cannot get satisfaction after your investment of over $6K with this guy.
It's about accountability from the mechanic to you. You deserve your money's worth. Demand it from him.
I can't see how to answer your question with mechanical information.
How do you you turn the o2 sensor light off sfter replacing the sensor?
macconeck -
"You will have to disconnect the positive battery cable for approximately 30 seconds
Then you will simply reconnect it
and this should clear all the fault codes and fault lights from your computer
I hope this helps"
New User -
That will not clear th o2 sensor light on the 1993 3.2 dohc the o2 sensor light is a replacement item at 90k so the light comes on at that time.
If I understand right there is something in the dash area that needs to be reset?
Thanks John
macconeck -
The light is easy to turn off all you have to do is remove the intro cluster and switch the screw to the open hole. both the holes have the same marking on them. Sometime the empty hole has tape over it.
You could pull the gauge cluster out, or IIRC- on some models, you can get at it from under the dash with a flashlight & some patience
On either side of the speedo cable connector, there's a hole labeled "KSW". Each hole is labeled and they are connected by a trace. There is a screw in one of the holes and there may be a piece of tape over the other one.
To re-set the light, take the screw out of the one hole and put it into the other one. Presto! Your O2 light goes out... until you reach 180,000 miles anyway. Every 90,000 miles the light comes on. You just keep swapping the screw back and forth to re-set it again.
The procedure is the same if you have the cluster with the tachometer. The holes are in different spots, but still located around the speedo cable connector
I hope this helps
New User -

The steering wheel has about 1/2" slop in it when you turn it left or right before it affects the steering. Suggestions?
Bruce Kit -
Two man job, one to turn strg wheel back and forth (eng not run)2nd person checks strg column coupler, pitman arm, and tie rod ends.If loosness in tie rod ends, idler arm, pitman arm or column coupler-replace worn part.If loosness in steering box, there is an adjustment (with licknut) on the top of steering box.Adjust a little at a time. You might req. alignment if you replace tie rod ends etc
New User -
Thank you. I will check it out. Sounds logical to me. The tires looked good. No odd wear like feathering or cupping or sholder wear. More than likely the steering box.
So the Anti Lock,Gas,Brake, and Battery lights came on, on the dash and the climate controls went out. the fan and A/C wont turn on. This has happened before but it would happen for seconds or a minute or two and go away. this time it hasn"t stopped
Bruce Kit -
First thing to check (with ohm meter) is the wiring and fuseable links at the battery. Also have battery and alt (charging system)tested.
There is a fairly major circuit with a connection problem, with that many circuits failing at same time.
1991 Isuzu Trooper Fuel System Chugging When accelerating Always
New User Asked -
FROM COLD START TO WARM - TAKES A BIT FOR ENGINE TO START WHILE TURNING OVER. WHEN STARTED FROM COLD, IDLES GREAT FOR ABOUT TEN SECONDS THEN STALLS OUT. WHEN WARM, ENGINE CHUGS/STALLS WHITH ACCELERATION. RECENTLY, I CHANGED OUT FUEL PUMP, FILTER AND CHECKED FOR DEBRIS IN TANK - FOUND NOTHING. SAME PROBLEM PERSISTS. MAYBE I SHOULD CHECK OTHER MYSTERIOUS ELECTRICAL FUEL SYSTEM COMPONENTS OR...?
Sterlingfixer -
If you have a 4 cylinder, check the Mass Air Flow Sensor. If you have a 6 cylinder, check your MAP sensor and hoses. If the service engine light is on, check the codes for some direction.
New User -
This Trooper is a four cylinder (2.6L). The "check engine" light is not on while driving. I can hear the mass airflow flapper opening when I give it gas. What exactly should I check the mass airflow system for? Should I be looking for obstructions or corrosion in the m.a.s.?"
Sterlingfixer -
Your air flow meter does not have a flap, but is mounted on the air intake with 2 screws. It is a 3 wire connector. Most likely if you remove it, the tiny, fragile element will have a fine layer of dirt on it. Try cleaning it gently with electrical parts cleaner. If that does not correct your driving problem, you will likely need to replace it. I can get a rebuilt for $350 with exchange. Dealer is $728.
New User -
The tiny MAF sensor with the three wires and two screws was cleaned with electronic cleaner and the motor acts the same. There has to be a simple fuel system explaination.
Sterlingfixer -
The MAF sensor measures the amount of air going to the engine and tells the computer to send the necessary fuel to match the air. They can fail and give the symptoms you are noticing. There could be other causes, such as low fuel pressure, bad coolant temperature sensor or vacuum leaks. However, these causes are not likely to fail in the pattern you are describing. There could also be dirty fuel injectors, restricting some of the fuel intended for the engine.
1991 Isuzu Trooper Ignition System Stalling When starting Always
New User Asked -
Vehicle will not stay stay running. It starts then stalls after the starter is disengaged. It is possible to start it if the rpm's get over 4k but requires the starter to stay runninr/engaged till over 4k. Wears out the starter. The fuel pump has been replaced along with fuel filter not sure what to look at next.
Douglas -
If you reach 4k rpm's will the engine then run normally- idle, smooth acceleration, etc?
Do you hear the fuel pump run during engine cranking? This is important.
Does the check engine light come when the engine is running?
New User -
The engine (2.6l 4 cylinder) will start but immediately stalls. The work around to getting it to run is to keep the starter turning till it get's over 4k rpm otherwise it immediately stalls.
The engine will run smoothly and accelerate fine after getting it over 4k at the start. I have not listened for the fuel pump. The check engine light does not remain on while running.
Douglas -
Listen for the pump and let me know. Your fuel pump may not be turning on until oil pressure builds up (or more precisely the sending unit recognizes oil pressure).
New User -
doug, won't be able to listen to it till next week when I get out to the island the Trooper is stationed (Maine). in the mean time is the fuel pump dependent on a signal from the oil sending unit?
thanks,
Craig
Douglas -
I'm pretty sure it is. I'll try to find a diagram to give you tomorrow. Reply back so I don't miss your question.
Can you help me locate the ECM fuse, so I can reset and hopefully eliminate the choking problem my Trooper has when I turn on the headlights.
Roger -
Hi, Is the engine a 2.6L? Fuse #6 supplies power.
If a 2.8L There is a Green Fusible Link that powere the main relay. When this relay powers up it supplies power to the ECM. If you would like a wiring diagram please advise which engine and your email address.
Had you considered just disconnecting the vehicle battery and reconnecting it?
Roger
socalcoast -
I am just now getting to this, thank you for the information, maybe if I give you more information. The problem we are having is when rolling down the windows, there is a power loss, and if you turn on the headlights the car backfires and the car will stall from lack of power. Any suggestions?
Roger -
Yes, Please have the alternator and vehicle battery tested. My thought is the voltage is dropping below what is needed to operate an accessory and still provide enough power to run the engine.

encsisme -
STOP RUNNING THE ENGINE! I hope I have your attention. Your engine is refered to as "an interference engine". What that means is that if your timing belt has jumped time you have a possibility of causing MAJOR engine damage. If you have more than 60000 miles on the timing belt you need to start by verifing your timing is still good on the belt. This is also a great time to replace the water pump (same work needs done). I can give you detailed instructions if needed. Al
New User -
My attention you have!and the detailed instructions you offer would be greatly apreciated.
Thank you
Scott
Douglas -
First off, this is not "AL".
I assume you checked the belt timing and all is well.
Has the exhaust manifold been replaced or ruled out?
This engine has an air pump (or smog pump). The system uses a check valve (or anti backfire valve) to close off air on deceleration to prevent backfire. You could disconnect and plug the hoses to the pump and then test drive to see if this is the problem.
Let me know, and hopefully it's the check valve ($14 @autozone)."
Douglas -
Have you checked all of the above?
Is spark advance working? While watching timing mark with a light rev engine and look for advancing and retarding of timing.
Need to clear something up before we go any further. When you say backfire do you mean out the exhaust or back through intake?
New User -
John.
Backfire though the ex, and only when you change between gears (manual shift), I am in England so things take a while to get!
you may think I am ignoring you but,for instance, its now 10:04am Sunday 11/01/04 and I just have your message, so will start with the check valve ( anti backfire valve)
Thanks

I had just wished to help you, and didn't know if you were following the suggestions.
At this site people pay if they are satisfied with the replies they receive. Which is a great system for the customer, but can be difficult in that people want a quick fix. But it often requires troubleshooting.... And this problem can take many steps to resolve. Hopefully we get it quickly.
England, that's cool. What were the chances LOL

I did what you suggested with the check valve and behold. "The problem is now solved" so if you relpy to this message then I shall pay, I wanted to do it this way so as I could thank you, and I was not sure if I could do so when the payment is made.
Thank you for your help, I dont thihk I could have found this without your advice, other than main dealer(BIG BUCKS!).
You offer an excellent service and I will recommend you and this service to most of my friends(those who are not that great with the workings of the modern engine).
Thank you once again...

Scott
Douglas -
Thank you for the kind words. Thanks also for letting me know the outcome.
It really is a great service. Dealer rates have become outrageous and it has little to do with the amount mechanics get paid.
If your friends use the service remind them to include all relevant information (as you did). Make, model, year, engine, etc. It saves time and allows us to offer more specific advice.
1990 Isuzu Trooper Ignition System Stalling When driving When warm
New User Asked -
My Trooper will start normally. When the engine is warm it stalls. I have run codes and the only one that comes up is 15, for a coolant temperature sensor. After it stalls, there is no ignition. I have changed the ignition coil and it started. This was only a temporary fix as it now stalls as it originally has done. Normally it will stall at idle, this morning it stalled while driving. If the vehicle is push started it runs fine, but after it stalls it will not start. I have read, done and looked at everything I know but can come up with not a single reason why it will not re-start after stalling.
macconeck -
it occurs to me from your symtoms that you have a couple of problems going on at the same time
one is the starting system and the other is the real time ignition
the sensor you mentioned could be half of the problem ,did you change it?
that would be wise to start off
now I want to address the cooling system are you sure that the coolant is circulating?
is the engine getting very hot and what is the temp reading before it is shutting down?
now when you say it is not starting after it shuts down is it cranking? is it clicking or is it not doing anything is nthe starter rotating? lets go from there
New User -
No I did not change the sensor because I can not find it's exact location. The temperature gauge reads normal when it does shut down. The engine does crank, i.e. the starter is turning but there is no ignition. I have one other suspect, the electronic module on the distributor. It tested fine, but I don't think that is a true resding of the module when actually running and hot.
macconeck -
the temperature sending unit is located near the coolant intake fairly close to the thermostat housing if the code says it is bad it could be giving a faulse reading to the computer causing a no run condition
did you check for a spark at the plugs while cranking the engine?
New User -
Yes, I checked for spark at the plugs and at the ignition coil and got none at either. However, the truck could be push started and it would run for a day or two then the original symptoms would return.
macconeck -
your spark is in no way related to the car being push started so that is just an odd coincidence the problem lies within your ignition system replace the old coil and chek for a spark it sounds like you have a loose conection somewhere in the circuit
check for power to the coil first
but make sure it is in its non starting mode
New User -
I have solved the ignition problem i was having. After checking for spark the "conventional" way(screwdriver from plug and from coil), I checked for voltage to the coil. Voltage was good at about 12.2 volts. I then went to the ignition module. After having it tested at the local automotive store I still had my doubts as it tested good. So I went ahead and changed the module and the vehicle starts and runs as normal. As for the temperature sensor, I will change it next to clear the fault light I have for it. Thanx for the advice.
My rotor "melted" and after replacing the rotor and cap, the car starts fine if cold, but dies before it even gets up to temp. (4-5 minutes). I suspect the ignition module, but according to my manual. the car doesn't have one. It's the 2.6 4cyl with the optical pick-up in the distributer.
Douglas -
First things first, check to see if you are indeed losing spark during the no start period. If you are losing spark, how long does it take to restart after?
New User -
Definitely no spark. Coil will sometimes fire ONCE when the key is turned on, but that's it. Takes an hour or so to start again. When it first happened, it would start again after a few minutes. Not anymore.
Douglas -
When the rotor melts, things get hot-- so test the optical pick-up. Also the igntion coil could be the problem.
New User -
I am begining to suspect the coil myself. Even when I hook it up "direct" (one side power, the other side intermittant to ground) I don't get a spark, so that says something, I think.
Douglas -
Your local autoparts store will test the coil for you, free of charge, off the car. Call ahead to be certain.
I have a no start condition. The throttle body is dry, showing no fuel. My next step is to check the the fuel pump connection (the car has been setting up and not run for nearly a year)
While doing that I would like to check/test the Fuel cut-off relay and the fuel pressure regulator but do not know where they are located.
Would appreciate location directions and any further suggestions.
Thank you
Bruce Kit -
Before you look at relays, try to hook 12 volts directly to fuel pump as it is most likely the culprit.
Bruce Kit -
There are 2 relays, one under dash, other on fusepanel...
