Isuzu Trooper ll

1993 Isuzu Trooper ll Engine

New User Asked -
than low transmission oil, what would cause the "check transmission light" to come on? This is happening frequently lately, and when it does, the engine loses power. My Trooper is 4-wheel drive, has a 3.1 liter engine with over 110,000 miles and automatic transmission. Any ideas?

-
Hi,

You need to take it to an auto technician to check the "trouble codes" from transmission computer.

Not sure wheather my problem is electrical or fuel related. My 92 Isuzu Trooper II will hesitate when I give it a little gas at low speeds. Will also spit an misfire a little. Only at low speeds with little petal. Does not happen at high speed. Vehicle has aprox 200 K miles.

macconeck -
It sounds like you can use a major tune up at first to rule out the spark plugs and wires and basic ignition componets.
this will most likely fix your problem
I hope this helps

1990 Isuzu Trooper ll Fuel System Stalling Happens sometimes

New User Asked -
Engine stalls just after starting when engage drive or reverse, sometimes, when hot or cold. Idles a bit rough in park. Seems to be worse at high altitude. Fine after driving a few minutes. Automatic 2.8 V6 160,000 miles.

Roger -
Hello, I'd be looking at the condition of the vacuum hose connections to the intake manifold for cracks that allow leaks.

Fuel pressure and (if fuel injected) injector operation should be addressed. Flushing the injectors may help. Since altitude is a factor, engine timing could be too far retarded if manually adjustable.

Do you know the maintenance history of the vehicle?

Roger

1990 Isuzu Trooper ll Engine Chugging When driving When warm

New User Asked -
I have a 1990 trooper with a gm 2.8 TBI engine. When I cruise with light throttle around 1200 to 2000RPM it jerks and stumbles. If I give it throttle it goes away. I have done a complete tune up (all filters, plugs, wires cap/rotor) and checked all sensors and everything is in spec. When I plug the egr vacuum line it goes away and the engine runs great. I replaced the egr valve, cleaned the passages and checked the egr selenoid and everything is in good order. THe tbi has been pulled apart, cleaned. New O2 sensor, the TPS has been adjusted to spec, the ETC sensor is in spec, timing etc. It seems like the egr is opening too much and causing a slight hesitation when first accelerating and the stumble at low rpm cruise. The car has 150k miles and the injectors are probably stock. It idles great with or without the egr hooked up and on the highway it runs fine... I'm stumped. oh yeah no codes either. Anythoughts?
Thank you

Douglas -
Check the vacuum diagram to make sure the egr vacuum hose is routed correctly.

New User -
Yes all the vacuum lines are routed appropriately, and there are no leaks.

Douglas -
Try a tap test on the ECM. Tap the ecm with a screwdriver handle (not hard enough to do damage) while the engine is idling and see if this recreates the stumble.

New User -
I figured it out thanks for your help. The egr which came with the vehicle when I bought it did not have an orfice restricting washer installed. I put the appropriate size orfice washer in the recess of the egr valve and it runs great. Anyways thought you would like to know for future diagnostics..
Thanks

Douglas -
That is strange you'd have two "inadequate" egr valves. Your welcome and good work!

1988 Isuzu Trooper ll Electrical / Lighting Systems Failing Happens always Always

New User Asked -
Hello! The lights for the speedo, tach, oil, gas and heater instruments failed after I had the e-brake and it's light fixed. All warning lights work. I installed a new headlight switch at the suggestion of the mechanic. No go. I tested the bulbs, they are ok. No blown fuses that I can find. Is there some fuse I don't know about? Under the dash? Is the mechanic inept? I think so. Thanks.

Roger -
Hello, Most manufacturers power the instruement lamp fuse off the tail lamp fuse. Is your tail lamp fuse good? Is there an instruement/panel lamp fuse too? Both would have to be good. Do the tail lamps work?

Was the emergency brake unbolted from the vehical down under the dash? I'm wondering if a ground wire might have been left loose on reassembly that would effect these lights...I can research the schematics for you if need be. I don't have a manual on your Trooper at hand.

Roger

New User -
All fuses were good. Taillights work. I did not notice any loose grounds, but will look again. THANKS Bill

Roger -
All right Bill, I'll see about getting my hands on the wiring schmematic to further assist you.

Roger

Roger -
Bill, FUSE #1 powers the LIGHTING SWITCH. The schematic shows a GRN/RED wire from the lighting switch to go into a RHEOSTAT. When the circuit leaves the RHEOSTAT it changes color to RED/GRN and goes out to the various lights for switches and dash lights.

See if FUSE #1 is good, turn on your lights and check the RHEOSTAT output RED/GRN wire for voltage you can vary by controlling the RHEOSTAT. If no output, there is the troublemaker right there. The wiring shows the RED/GRN wire's next stop is a light bulb and then on to each of the others.

Please advise,

Roger

Roger -
Hey Bill, will you update this situation for me please? I do want to help.

Roger

Roger -
Any news here?

Thanks,

Roger

New User -
Hi Roger. My computer went down 2 weeks ago or so. Just replaced video card. Sorry for the delay. The rheostat is in the headlight switch I believe. The switch has been replaced twice with no luck. No lights for speedo, tach oil, temp or gas gauge. Warning lights work. #1 fuse good. Emergency brake fixed...no lighting since. Thanks, Bill

Roger -
Hi Bill, is your computer a SONY? My SONY VAIO NOTEBOOK died. 15 months old. A motherboard for that boat anchor is $940.00. I have a degree in computer network technology so I can fix it myself if I want to pay the $940.00 parts price. NOT!!

The wiring schematic I have details the Dash light rheostat to be WIRED to the headlight switch. That led me to believe it was a scroll dial on the dash. If you rotate the headlamp switch knob for dimming I'll have to rethink this.

Roger

New User -
Hi Roger! Thanks for all the trouble you are going thru. My computer is a compac presario 8000. Cost a bundle (custom). Video card went 18 months almost to the day! Do what you can about the light stuff. I will pay you anyway for all the trouble. Bill

Roger -
Bill, do you rotate the headlamp switch knob to dim the panel lights? Can you access the instruement cluster to check for connector integrity?

Roger

Roger -
Bill, where did you go?

Roger

Roger -
May I hear from you, please? Thanks!

Roger

Hello? Will you please update this question status?

New User -
Hello! My computer went down, they came to fix it three times, and Best Buy finally gave me a new one. Sorry about the delay. It turned out I was getting the wrong switch sent to me. The mechanic jumped a wire on the switch when I brought it back for the third time for the parking brake. Thanks for all you hard work and investigation. Bill

1987 Isuzu Trooper ll Fuel System Stalling When accelerating When warm

New User Asked -
After making a sharp turn while going over a bump (such that the vehicle was jolted, the carb stalls out when I try to accelerate. Standing still, it idles and accelerates just fine. But when letting the clutch out, it wants to bog down, and the only way to get moving is to really rev up tto high RPM's to get moving. This has happened before after making sharp turns.

Douglas -
Is your engine fuel injected?"

New User -
No fuel injection- 87 Isuzu Trooper II. Could it be some junk in the fuel tank got moved around and clogged the fuel filter (which is by the rear wheel)? But if this is the case, why did it go away after a few minutes when this happened several times before? This time, the stalling or hesitation on acceleration has continued.

Douglas -
When you have restricted fuel flow the problem will present itself whether you are moving or not (it takes more gas to rev an engine regardless of if you're trying to move). In case there is confusion with our communication, it wouldn't hurt to change the filter.
It would be really nice if you could check fuel pressure with a gauge. This would let you know for certain if it's a problem with fuel supply.
Do you have a repair manual?

New User -
Yes- I have the factory workshop manual. I will get a fuel filter today and change it tonight.

Douglas -
Okay, if this doesn't work let me know.

This is an unusual problem, going over a bump or making a sharp turn causing the engine to cut out when trying to accelerate when still idling without a problem.

New User -
I replaced the fuel filter- same problem. And now, while it still idles fine, on revving the engine it cuts out-like it is missing. Maybe because it has been sitting and cooled down? I am puzzled as to what could cause this just because of taking a sharp turn and bump. Because this has happened before several times (but corrected itself after a few minutes of driving) I know I am not crazy.

Douglas -
I believe you are having the problem and are not crazy. I was simply indicating this was an unusual problem making diognosis difficult, especially from here (not to mean these problem are easy when they are right in front of you.

I would check wiring harnesses, connections, etc. See if you can find any that may be getting pulled on or stretched when you go over a bump (anything to cause the engine/trans/etc to shift or move). Things like worn engine or transmission mounts would contribute to this problem. I don't think you have an 'inertia safety switch' that would shut off fuel supply (and if you did they normally don't reset themselves.
This is a tough one, I'll help as much as I can.

1987 Isuzu Trooper ll Fuel System Lagging When accelerating When warm

New User Asked -
Starts fine but then after a few moments it has a stutering and loss of power! It seems that when I initially start it , it seem fine and accelerates nomally! Then it just starts to "lag"! No power!

Douglas -
Have you checked for a restricted exhaust, ex- plugged catalytic converter?

When was the last tune-up, particularly the fuel filter?

New User -
WHERE IS THE FUEL FILTER ON A 1987 ISUZU TROOPER 2

Douglas -
UNDER VEHICLE, PASSENGER SIDE, BELOW SEATING AREA, MOUNTED IN FUEL LINE TO TANK.

Copy and Paste the following link into your address bar. It contains a repair guide for you vehicle-

http://autozone.com/servlet/UiBroker?ForwardPage=/az/cds/en_us/[redacted] d/80/18/32/1[redacted] 3211.jsp

New User -
I'll go look right now!

Douglas -
Let me know what you find.

New User -
Went out and installed new filter! It seemede to have helped a little but still will not go over 2500 RPM with a load on it!

Douglas -
Okay, if the engine will rev above 2500 RPM's when cold, the next thing to check for is restricted exhaust. There are a couple methods to do this. One requires a vacuum gauge- have one? The other involves creating an exhaust leak before the catalytic converter for test purposes. Do this by temporarily removing the oxygen sensor or slightly dropping the exhaust enough to create a leak. The idea with this test is allowing the engine to 'exhale' without having to 'breathe' through a (potentially) plugged converter. Remember this is only for test purposes, be careful of exhaust fumes entering the cabin.

New User -
Would it be easier to take it to a shop and have it testrd? Can I just remove it? I live in Hawaii where there is no Smog requirements!

Douglas -
It would be better to leave it on for a variety of reasons.

Have you tried loosening the bolts/nuts enough to drop the exhaust pipe so exhaust gas doensn't have to pass through the converter? If you can handle this safely yourself, I'd hold back on the shop in case it's something more complicated that the shop will need to diagnose.

BTW- Was this vehicle originally desinged for US standards or overseas? It does have a carburetor, or not?

Hawaii! Enjoy the weather, it has warmed back up into the 20's. The high for the day will still be well below freezing.

New User -
Douglas, Am taking this to a reputable muffler shop who says that he thinks very positivley tha t it is a blocked CAT! Anyway just so you get resolution to this and mabe for your own FYI I will let you know what happens on Monday! Keeping my fingers crossed!

Douglas -
THE FYI is nice, we don't get them often enough. I hope you are up and running. Let me know.

1986 Isuzu Trooper ll Engine

New User Asked -
My 1986 Isuzu Trooper II seems to run fine at times but as it reaches around 45 MPH, it seems the front brakes are locking up, like anti-lock brakes jerking but it doesn't have them. You have to slow down and then it stops. The calipers are super hot so I know the brakes are seizing. Weird thing is it will not idle after some episodes and you lose acceleration control of the engine too. Pushing the clutch in and tryinng to rev the engine has no response untill you slow down to 35MPH or less. Coul dit be the engine control module?

Bruce Kit -
Sounds like the brake power booster and or the master cylinder is sticking, causing the brakes to drag. If it were the power brake booster, then the resulting loss of vacuum would cause the idle problem.
If both front brakes lock up, it probably is not a sticking caliper, as they usually do not fail at the same time.
If you are not comfortable working on brakes, many shops such as Midas offer a free brake inspection.
