1993 Jeep Grand Wagoneer Engine  Happens sometimes No pattern

New User Asked -
At times will not stay running. Starts up run for a second or two and shut right off. Can be hot or cold. Yesterday would not start for two days, pushed it out the garage for tow truck the thing started and been running fine until next time. Fuel pump, filter, Alternator, plugs and wires been replaced. Still same problem at times. Please Help! Leroy

Leroy,
This problem could be coming from a variety of causes. The intermittant nature will make it more difficult to pinpoint. If possible, it will help narrow the field if you can find the answer to these 4 questions at the time when the Jeep is acting up.
#1 Is the check engine light lit when you turn the key on? If not, then the problem likely lies in the computer, or the powers and ground wires to the computer, or a relay.
#2 Will it start if you hold the gas pedal at 1/4? If so, then likely a weak battery cuasing the computer to forget its settings, or a problem with the idle speed controls.
#3 Will it start when given a shot of starting fluid? If so, then it is likely a problem in the fuel pump electrical circuit, like a loose connection or a bad pump relay.
#4 Does the spark at the plug wires jump 1/2 inch strongly? If not, check for strong spark coming out of the coil. If no good, check the wire connection on the bottom of the coil. You may have a loose connection, bad coil, bad pickup (on transmission belhousing) or a bad computer.

I am sure this should help keep things on track.

Thanks Dale. I forgot to mention that sometimes while driving the service four wheel drive switch comes on in the information center. I'm not sure if it's related to the starting and problem since this is an all wheel drive. The check engine light is not on. It will start up for a second or two but won't stay running. I'll try changing the coil next.

Leroy,
On this truck the service 4Wheel drive is a common problem, but is unrelated to the starting problem. Also, when you turn the key on, the check engine light should be lit until lthe engine starts!

1984 Jeep Grand Wagoneer Drive Train / Driveline

New User Asked -
Hi, my four wheel drive dosent work. When I drove the car suddenly didnīt move forward. The engine was running but the car didnīt move. I changed to 2x4 drive and that worked. After that I canīt get the high/low output to work. The floor switch is impossible to move. I found that one hose to the black "coffe can" was loose and hoped that that was the problem. But no, no difference, the four wheel drive still dosent work. But I managed to change the high output. But just once! Usally I can hear an "air" sound when I switch from 2 wheel to 4 wheel drive on the dashboard. But now I canīt hear anything when I turn the switch.

You are on the right track with the hose. The coffee can or vacuum reservoir might have a leak, they do rust. Also trace the hose back up to the intake manifold on the engine. This system must have vacuum to work. If you have to, run a new vacuum hose .They are cheap.

New User -
Thanks! You donīt think itīs a problem with the transfer case(hope not)? There is no sound or anything from it but I changed the oil in it and it was completely black. Can you only engage the "high output" (or is it called "low output" when you need more power) when the 4x4 drive is activated? From the "coffe can" the hose goes to a black round "ball" I think. What is that called and what does it do?

Bruce Kit -
The transfer case probaly ok, as they are built strong.Sometimes they can be damaged with different sized tires. The black round ball is another vacuum reservoir.Check it for leaks too.

New User -
Hi again! Thanks for reply. Just one more question! I found the leak in the vacuum system. Thanks! But the leak wasnīt by the transfer case. I followed the vaccum hoses to the front axel transmission (thatīs not the right word) I found 3 rubber hoses going into the "transmission", one of them where off and the other two almost off. Now my question is, the 3 rubber hoses that goes into the front axel "transmission"is fitted to a rubber contact in one single part. The rubber contact is connected to 3 metal hoses coming from the transfer case. I want to buy this 3 rubber hoses with the rubber contact. But I don+t know what the part is called, And where to buy it. Do you have any idea?
best regards and thanks for your help. This is a super service!!

Great. Its just called a vacuum junction tee. Either a wrecker will have or your Jeep Dealer. He will have pictures you can look at.
