1995 Mazda MX6 Engine Malfunction When accelerating Always

Seeram Asked -
I have a 95 MX6( Automatic - 2.0L).The engine malfunction light comes on when i reach 3000 rpm on 3rd gear.So its like when ever i try to accelerate during a stop sign, and reach more than 3000 rpm(on 3rd gear), the engine malfuction light(the light with engine symbol) comes on. and when i get to 4th gear, the light goes off.Local transmission mechanic could not retrieve any codes from OBD sensor, asked me change o2 sensor.I see no difference in engine performance.guide me what do ?do you think autozone can fix the problem. Thanks in advance!

macconeck -
I think you can fix the problem with the help of autozone
When there is an intermittant light you can either wait for a steady light where a code is issued or start exchanging parts related to the speed
and accelerator your vss vehicle speed sensor, tss turbine shaft speed sensor, tcs trans control switch, ppcm powertrain control mod.
these parts can be returned if it has no change just keep your reciept
basically if no code then the process of elimination will usually work

Seeram -
Thanks for the reply. I'm totally satisfied with your answer. But i have clarification. can you tell me(or atleast point to an onlinse source) how much each of this sensors in general market cost and in what order do you think i should go ?
1)vss 2)tss 3)tcs 4)ppcm
Thanks again !

macconeck -
The return spring in the EGR valve could be weak allowing the valve to open to quickly. Try temporarily disconnecting it and test drive.
This would be the least expensive part
The tps throttle position sensor tells the computer how far open the throttle is.
This does affect the transmission shift points.
your vss vehicle speed sensor should be next
You can call the dealer and get part numbers and prices ,then call around to auto parts and get much lower prices

1995 Mazda MX6 Engine Failing When accelerating Always

New User Asked -

kaptnzog -
I didn't get any info as to your concern. If you want to retry, I'll see what we can figure out. Thanks, Paul

New User -
Dear Tech

When I entered stuff there was no place to be specific about the problem on your entry screens. Here goes.

I have a 1995 Mazda MX-6 with 2.5l engine. If you accellerate at all, even a slow pullout, it coughs, sputters and will die if you don't let up. However, if you very very lightly ease the accellerator, the engine will go all the way up to full RPMs without problems.

We took it to one mechanic who said (w/o diagnostics) that it was the distributor ($400 part). We took it to the only shop in our small town that has a diagnostic computer (the plymouth dealer). The computer came up with 3 items oxygen sensor, fuel/oxygen mix, and something else. When he reset the codes, then nothing reappeared on the diagnostic.

We have replaced the distributor cap & rotor, fuel filter, and air intake tube (it had a split where it attached to the carburator and missing clamp on the oxygen sensor side). None of these have made any difference.

The mechanics have no clue what to try first and the thought of replacing several multiple $100s of dollar parts to find out if any of them are the problem didn't seem smart to me, thus we are asking your advice.

Thanks - Bill

kaptnzog -
When this shop reset the codes,I take it they replaced nothing. You got an O2 code,a fuel/oxygen mix code, and one you don't recall. From what you have discribed and by receving the codes you did,an actual O2 sensor,MAP sensor,or TPS sensor come to mind. When he retrieved these codes,I'm taking it that he just looked in the code book to see what that code number represented rather than go thru the flow chart and test to see if said part was the actual cause. The series of tests on the flow charts need to be carried out on each individual code to help pinpoint the problem part(s).Alot of techs will throw the first part at the top of the chart in only to find that one of the other codes is directly related and the previous part was not nessesary. All three of these sensors have a close relation to each other and can be diagnosed incorrectly.Yes you can get into alot of money if the tech does it this way but if you can get the actual code numbers he retrieved,I can try to see if I can be of any assistance.Sorry I wrote a book but I just don't go on wild goose chases.
Good Luck,
Paul

We are now on another tack on this. According to the mechanic the coil is putting out a very weak spark (the meter showas a very high resistance of 300,000 ohms as opposed to the 3,000 it is supposed to be?).

Anyway, we tracked down a used distributor (the coil is built into the innards of the distributor) and we will see if that fixes the problem.

I'd like to leave this question open for a day or two until we see if the distributor fixes things.

Thanks - Bill

New User -
It was the distributor. I wish we had figured that out before the mechanic charged us for 7 hours diagnosis time ($350) plus the labor and parts for the distributor (another $340).

Thanks for your efforts

1993 Mazda MX6 Ignition System Stalling When driving Always

New User Asked -
after it runs for ten minutes it starts to hesitate and when i give it gas it graduily slows to a lower idle and the catalytic converter heats up cherry red then it shuts off but can be started back when it cools down

New User -
COULD THE CATALYTIC CONVERTOR BE STOPPED UP OR THE IGNITION COIL IN THE DISTIBUTOR BE BAD OR THE PICKUP BY THE BALANCE WHEEL

Bruce Kit -
Its not unusual for the cat converter to be plugging up after 14 years of use. Get it checked out by a shop.
If you are capable of removing a spark plug check if the electrode is black, indicating it is running too rich and making conv. hot.
But I am still thinking the cat is shot.
Good high flow cats are less than $1oo and an hour of labor at the shop.
The old cat is recyclable , by the way.

New User -
THIS CAR PUTS OUT A CODE 41 AND A CODE 46 FROM THE COMPUTER WHAT DO THESE READ

Bruce Kit -
Code 41 or P1521 is a VRIS #1 Solenoid open
Code 46 or P1522 is a VRIS #2 Solenoid open

If you have the capability to diagnose electrical circuits, give it a shot! If not, give this info to your tech.

1993 Mazda MX6 Engine

rfdece Asked -
I am purchasing a Mazda Mx6.The car runs very hot after 15 minhites of driving. The radiator and water pump have been replaced about a year ago. The seller says that the hi temp (indicater headed towards overheat) started after the work was done. Could this have anything to do with the heads? The oil is clean and there are no smells or signs of leakage. The car has 78000 miles and seems to run well. Should I be concerned about the heads/head gaskets? If it is head related, can I tell just by looking under the hood? Thank you in advance, Bob.

Roger -
Hello, No you cannot tell by just looking under the hood.

It could be that the thermostat is stuck.

There is a test to check for head gaskets leaking into the cooling system that I would not suggest you try without professional help.

Do the cooling fans work properly?

I'll check back later today.

Roger

rfdece -
There are two fans, both work , but only one at a time. One turns on when the AC goes on and the other after the car runs for a little while. But never at the same time. After driving the car up and over hills for 10 min. the temp guage was almost at the red. The engine was not that hot and the overflow was cool to the touch. PS where is the thermostat located on this car? Thanks!

Roger -
Both cooling fans will come on when the a/c is on and the engine is warm enough for the temperature sensor to activate the second fan to assist in cooling.

What I am calling the second fan is really the cooling system's primary fan. The one that would come on when the a/c is not operating at all.

Bleeding the air out of the cooling system is critical. This may factor here.

The thermostat is located in a housing at the engine end of the upper radiator hose.

Please advise your email address and I will send you some useful information.

What engine does this car have? 2.0L or 2.5L??

Roger

rfdece -
Hi Roger. My email address is [redacted]
The engine is the 2.5 litre v6. Thank you again, Bob

Roger -
Emailed a bleeding process to get the air out of the cooling system.

Roger

rfdece -
Hi Roger I tried the Quick bleed. It seemed to work some but the temp indicator still shows half way. (high noon) A mechanic checked it with an infra red thermometer after a load on the motor and found that the engine was at a good temp.(170, 190 degrees,f.)
Everything else checked out ok. I guess the indicator is out of calibration. I drove the car about 100 miles today and it runs great. (by the way, I bought the car). Thanks for your help. Bob

Roger -
You should be just fine now that you can see what this car's guage calls normal.

Please click on OK to finish up.

I thank you,

Roger

1992 Mazda MX6 All Part Groups Malfunction Happens sometimes

New User Asked -
after 5000 rpm shift, first time just a hiccup, third time, died, would not start. ilet it sit a couple days, ckecked the spark and it started right up.i've had a few more hiccups lately (after 5000) but by pushing the clutch in and out it starts itself.any ideas thanks carl

Sterlingfixer -
Carl,
Obviously, the car is not supposed to run like that. It should rev right to 6/7000 with no problem (not great for the mechanicals).

The most likely engine speed type failures are to come from inside the distributor. I would say the most likely culprit is the pickup inside the distributor. Second suspect is the ignitor inside the distributor.

Replacing the distributor will take care of both parts.

If you really want to be sure, connect a timing light on the coil wire, tape the trigger ON, on the winshield and drive or rev the engine until it hiccups. A problem from the distributor will cause the almost steady timing light to blink off for a moment when in hiccups.

1991 Mazda MX6 Electrical / Lighting Systems Won't Start Happens always Always

Steve Asked -
Hello,
I am stumped about my MX6. Previously, when I turned the key the engine would attempt to start, but would not turn over. My son who had the car before me took the battery out for another vehicle. The battery would not work in the other car (side mounted poles). Yeah, he doesn't know much about cars. Put the battery back and and now the car will not turn over and there are not lights. The car is completely dead. I tried the battery from my car, but no go. I have replaced all the fuses under the hood. Still nothing. I believe it is an electrical relay, but don't know where that is. What electrical problem could cause no power to the car at all?? Are my assumptions correct about an electrical relay and where do I find this on the car. This MX6 is the 2.2L non-turbo model.

Thank you in advance for any help you can give me.

SP

Steve -
For further information, this problem all began when I got a call from my son when I was at work that the car would not start. It would not turn over and AAA tried to jump and it would not turn over even then. Consequently they had to tow it back to our home. Since I finally have gotten the time to address the problem.

Roger -
Hi, I've been looking at wiring diagrams for the MX6. I do not see a relay that would have to close for you to have power to the car's body circuits.

There is a Main Relay shown that is energized when the key is turned ON that powers the car's computer, injectors, fuel pump...engine related circuits.

Have you checked the condition of the battery cables, their terminal ends and the connections on both ends of both cables?

Roger

Steve -
Hello Roger,

The cables look fine, but I was thinking of changing those next. From your description, it sounds like the main switch you were talking about. Where is that located?

Thank you,

Steve

Roger -
Hey Steve, What is your email address so I can send you some good stuff on your car?

Thanks,
