Air conditioner shuts down after a few minutes and the electric fans come on. I believe there is a sensor that regulates this function but do not know what it is called or where it is located.

Have the A/C checked for coolant amount (R12)If low, the pressure sensor in line by a/c compressor will shut the a/c off. If you can see that sensor (plug with two wires) You can TEMPORARILY bypass with a short jumper wire. When I say TEMPORARY, I mean it! If you leave the jumper wire on, and the Freon is low, you will probably burn out the A/C Pump

Will the sensor also start the electric fans? They come on as soon as the engine warms to operating temp., even without the air conditioner being turned on.

normally the sensor will turn on 1 'extra' fan when a/c on. 2nd fan also should come on when temp unusually high
