1993 Mercedes-Benz 300E Electrical / Lighting Systems

New User Asked -
1993 3.2 L engine..ASR activates on startup ..drives like sticky tranny ..when gear goes near rpm limit ,release foot and gearshifts up.Occasional stall,or revving at startup. Can drive thru it,and understand that it is a complex problem..Tires/pressure ok..light wiring a little wierd..dash light was going on when hitting brake pedal last night.

Douglas -
Hello,

Has any work been done recently to the vehicle? Did the dash light problem appear at the same time as the driveability complaint?

Try cleaning the battery terminals and the grounds on the car (clean or replace as necessary). This could be as simple as a bad wire/ground or may require a visit to a shop with the right diagnostic equipment.

I have a 300e 1992 The fuel guage on my instrument cluster is flickering. I also have the coolant light increasing and decreasing yellow in intensity. Fluid is full. Lastly my ABS light is bright yellow. Are these separate issues or something in the instrument cluster

Douglas -
This is most likely to be the instrument cluster. You could remove the cluster and check for pin damage/corrosion (where the cluster plugs in). You may also have a business in you area that repairs instrument clusters. You could also shop for a used/rebuilt cluster, eBay is worth a look.

1991 Mercedes-Benz 300E Ignition System Sticking Happens always

New User Asked -
My ignition key some times sticks and i can not rease the steering because i can not turn the key to releas the steering, I process of doing this the key broke inside the cylender. How can i disassemble the ignition to take key out.

Roger -
Hello, Have you considered having a lock smith remove the broken key? This may be possible without disassembly by using tweezers or similar tool.

When the key will not turn (so you can release the steering wheel lock) you'll find it necessary to rotate the steering wheel left or right just enough to take the stress off the locking pin. 1/8 inch of rotation may be all you can move the steering wheel (I know you can't turn it) but that's all it takes. "Rocking" the steering wheel left/right while turning the ignition key at the same time should eliminate the problem.

1991 Mercedes-Benz 300E Engine

TDHC13 Asked -
My 300e starts and runs fine. However, if I open the throttle suddenly the vehcile stumbles, coughs in the intake manifold but will gradually increase power. This is noticeable especially when cold. I have chaqnged the fuel filter and a about five to seven years ago, I changed one of the fuel pumps, all injectors. Recently changed the cap, rotor and plugs. No check engine lights or other performance trouble. runs great on expressway. I think it may be fuel pressure regulator or other pump is weak (20 years old) and not producing enough pressure. ideas?

THE ENGINE IS 3.0, SIX CYLINDER,

Hi, a common problem with these is sometimes if you get some dirty fuel this causes a lot of problems like your having, so the first thing you should try is to go out to your nearest filling station or car spares shop and buy a fuel line cleaner a good brand is called Red X, just make sure you buy correct type ie petrol or diesel, then read the insructions on back of bottle.

how ever it will say pour into full tank of fuel dont do this pour it into half a tank of fuel, doing this makes it work a lot quicker and should solve your problem.
once you have poured it into the tank do the following.

for first 20 min drive normal
for 2nd 20 to 25 min drive a bit harder pulling away quicker and taking the revs up higher
then drive normal for last 20 to 25 min
doing this ensures it has been under pressure and should help with your problem

if the problem improves or goes away then its advised to use this product every 6 weeks or so, it helps keep the car running at its best and it improves mpg so can save you money in the long term

let me know how you get on ok

TDHC13 -
Thank you for the information. I replaced the fuel injectors and the problem has resolved. I am not able to make it stumble like before. I believe the injectors were dirty. It seems like this CIS system is very prone to problems with dirty fuel indeed. This is the second time that I have changed the injectors. Thanks for your suggestion.

pauldonp -
hi, glad you got it sorted, their is a product you can buy to cure this problem you should be able to get it from most filling stations and car spares shops, its a fuel line cleaner you pour into the tank then this cleans the whole fuel line and injectors, just make sure you buy correct type ie petrol or diesel, its best to use this product every couple of months to prevent build up of dirt in the fuel lines and injectors, see if you can get this product as it would save you money in the long term.

1988 Mercedes-Benz 300E All Part Groups Won't Start Happens sometimes No pattern

New User Asked -
I have a 1988 300E, mileage 107K has problems starting. PROBLEM 1: Car starts w/o problem but after being driven...car will not start. Engine will not turn over...could hear engine trying to turnover but to no avail. Waited 15-30 min and car started again then problem comes back when trying to re-start car. PROBLEM 2: Car refuses to start and we could hear cranking noise but engine will not turn over. The next day, car started fine but faced w/ problem 1. Don't think the problem is the starter since it's trying to crank the engine but engine refuses to turn over. Any suggestions? Thanks for your time.

encsisme -
It sounds like either the ground wire is dirty/loose OR the Pos wire is dirty/loose or the starter is experiencing heat soak. I will explain each. If the wire connections are dirty or loose they cannot transfer the power needed to crank over the starter. Heat soak is where the starter is exposed to heat (normally from the exhaust) and swells up. Given some time it cools and can operate normally. This is very bad for the starter. I would start by making sure my battery is good, clean the terminals and make sure the connections at the engine are clean and tight. Let me know if you need more help. Al

1986 Mercedes-Benz 300E Fuel System Hesitating When starting When cold

New User Asked -
i have to grind on the starter a lot when the engine is cold to get it started.also is it a vary hard job to change timing chain and tensioner my self.I also have trouble with getting heat to go to the floor ,the buttons at the front do not want work as far as sending heat to another area.someone told me it was probable a throttle body causing the hesitation .Is that a big job?

macconeck -
you need to start off with checking your tune up conponets sounds like worn or damaged parts then check for loose or cracked vacume hoses under the dash at your heater switch box, use a carburater cleaner to spray around intake manifold to see if there is a change in rpms you may need to replace intake gasket spray around carb or throttle body to check for leaks it is more likely a few minor problems you can repair yourself and you can change chain and tensioner yourself just make marks on the gears with a felt tit befor removing old chain and make sure the marks are the same location when you install the new one

New User Asked -
I drove this car yesterday,it started fine.I drove to the post office and turned it off.I came back to start and it would not make a noise.I noticed a clicking noise coming from under the breather, towards the starter. Is this the starter? Will it just go out like that or could it be something else?I do have plenty of power from battery. What is the easiest way to change starter?

Parts -
It does sound like it could be the starter. Start by checking the voltage at the starter itself. It should have at least 12 volts there. You may also have someone try to crank it while you are lightly tapping the side of the starter with a hammer, if it starts this way replace the starter. As far as pulling it off - no "good way" just do it ! :)

New User Asked -
I just bought this car and it cuts off sometimes at lights. It seems to idle rough. The previous owner gave me the entire maintenance history and he had taken it to the dealer with the same problem, dealer said there was no problem. When I looked under the hood the first spark plug wire (the one closest to me) felt loose but car did not drive any differently when I pushed it in harder. Any ideas or suggestions for me? Chrissy Wallace

Bruce Kit -
Crissy
If a plug wire was loose, that may cause a missfire and rough running.Pushing it in is not a good repair, only temporary. Removing the plug wire and lightly crimping down on the terminal would make it tighter.
If you have acess to a volt / ohm meter, test the resistance, or if they look old replace them. If the last tune was over 6-9 months ago, you might consider one.
Also if the plug wire was loose, that particular plug may be a bit fouled, as it was not sparking all the time.
Remember a tuneup is preventitive maintenance, not something you do after you have problems.

How do I desable the auto/start alarm

Douglas -
Hello,

Is this a factory or aftermarket alarm? Is it stuck on?

New User -
It is a factory alarm, and yes it is stuck on. I unplugged the connection at the brain which stopped the horn blowing & lights flashing as an immediate alternative, not a fix.I got wiring diagram from wireagram.com i'm not sure how to read it.
