1993 Mercury Capri Drive Train / Driveline  When driving Always

New User Asked -
THE MANUAL SHIFT LIGHT ON THE DASH BLINKS.IT DOESNT MATTER WHAT THE POSITION ON THE PUSH BUTTON ON THE GEAR SELECT IS IN. THE CAR RUNS PERFECT AND SHIFTS NORMAL. ITS JUST THAT THE LIGHT BLINKS AND IM WONDERING IF I WILL DO DAMAGE TO THE TRANS IF I DRIVE IT. THSI CAR IS NON TURBO WITH AN AUTOMATIC TRANS

Douglas -
It is not likely to cause transmission failure. To be on the safe side you should go to a couple transmission shops that offer FREE estimates (Aamco does nationwide, I believe) and have them perform diagnostics. You can return and tell me what they prescribe, don't let them pursuade you into a costly repair- simply walk away.

New User -
it has been to two differant shops they spent quite a bit of time on it. they cannot find the problem. i am in the buisenes and i have not been charged anything as of yet. the only cost out lay was to purchase a used trans computer to see if that was the problem. what i need is someone who knows this mazda ford set up. that may have come across this. every one in volved agrees that it probably will not cause trans dammage. as this is a car thaty i gave to my girlfreind and everything is 100% perfect on the car i would love to see this problem go away. please any other sugestions would be greatfull thanks chris

Douglas -
I will do some research on your problem and get back to you.

1991 Mercury Capri Ignition System

New User Asked -
how to set timing 1991 capri

macconeck -
REMOVE THE SPARK PLUG FOR THE NUMBER 1 CONNECT A TACHOMETER ACCORDING TO THE MANUFACTURERS INSTRUCTIONS [THIS DEPENDS ON THE TIMING LIGHT YOU HAVE AND THE TACH].
DISCONECT TO PLUG AND VACCUME HOSES FROM THE VACCUME DIAPHRAGM.
GROUND THE SELF TEST INPUT CONNECTOR [STI] LOCATED IN THE RIGHT REAR OF THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT .
START THE CAR AND GET IT TO NORMAL ENGINE OPERATING TEMPERATURE.
TURN OFF ALL ELECTRICAL LOADS.
NOW CHECK THE IDLE SPEED ON THE TACH IT SHOULD BE AT ABOUT 850 RPM
PLUS OR MINUS 50 ADJUST IT AT THE THOTTLE BODY AS NECCESSARY.
AIM THE TIMING LIGHT AT THE TIMING MARKS LOCATED AT THE FRONT TIMING BELT COVER AND CRANKSHAFT DAMPER.
THE TIMING SHOULD BE 12 PUS OR MINUS 1 DEGREES BTDC ON THE TURBOCHARGED ENGINE.
IF THE TIMING IS OFF LOOSEN UP THE DISTRIBUTOR HOLD DOWN BOLTS AND TURN THE DISTRIBUTOR UNTIL THE TIMING MARKS ARE ALIGNED.
TIGHTEN THE DISTRIBUTOR AND RECHECT THE TIMING.
TURN OFF ENGINE AND REMOVE THE CONNECTION TO THE TACH AND TIMING LIGHT ,RECONNECT THE
DISTRIBUTOR VACUUME HOSES.
I HOPE THIS HELPS

1991 Mercury Capri Engine

New User Asked -
i bought a mercury 91 mecury capri xr2 and i think the turbo went all the sudden last night smoke comes out like a smokescreen behind me and if i take the oil cap off while its running it stalls immediately i also hear like a grinding and the car has no power and a whirrriing noise too i am a gm tech but know nothing about these 1.6 turbo motors engine starts up fine and idles fine and can be driven just smoke and noise comming from motor and not leaking anywhere either

Douglas -
What color is the smoke?

New User -
smoke is blue and its alot of it but i have no clue why i take the cap off the valve cover and it stalls right out,.... turbo boost guage does not say anything anymore but car starts and runs ok idles fine

Douglas -
Temporarily plug off the PCV and see if this stops the stall and smoke.

New User -
no same problem but when i unplugged pcv from throttle body of course it stalled now i plug that inlet in throttle body and start it up it runs still smokes but listen to this when i take the plug off the inlet and it stalls i hear something rattling aftert the motor is stalled out i hear something rolling around either in the sylinder or in the top of the head maybe it dropped a valve???

Douglas -
Maybe, whatever it is it sounds like this engine is probably done unless you intend to repair it. Time to pull the valve cover at least.

Did you get to enjoy the engine before the problem(s)?

New User -
nope looks like i got screwed yet annother time on a car i bought on ebay,...... but if it is one of the lifters and the guide is where the oil is going through is it possible on this motor to pump air into the cylinder replace the guide and the lifter without pulling the head off ?

1986 Mercury Capri All Part Groups

New User Asked -
I have a 1986 mercury capri 5.0 i just replace the engine with 1988 mustang engine 5.0. When driving it cut out in second gear then it catches . Then sometime chuggs and shake and vibrates, then igive it more gas then it run fine. Do i need to change the fuel injection wiring harness or get a wiring harness for a 1988 5.0 engine or could it be a ground problem.

Bruce Kit -
First it would be great if you did the wiring swap with the diagnostic connector, then you could do a diagnostic scan.
The wiring is probably ok. A fuel press guage might be a good idea, as it sounds like it might be running out of fuel.Possibly because of a weak fuel pump or a partially plugged filter?
so the best advice I can offer at this time is a scan and hooking up a fuel pressure guage.
If you are considering a wiring change, the Painless Wiring Harness is nice

New User -
I change the fuel filter last night no changes.when idiling the lights inside and out are bright when driving the lights flicker and get so dim i cant see. I turn on the hazzard lights and it flashes on one a time like the singal lights would do.

Bruce Kit -
Sounds like a ground problem in the wiring
