Mitsubishi Mighty Max

1991 Mitsubishi Mighty Max Ignition System Malfunction When starting Always

New User Asked -
2.4 liter. Will not run,no spark. Primary and secondary coil resistence check good. Voltage to coil, ignition on. I cannot find values for;control module, dist. pick up,harness connectors. Thanks Jim

Douglas -
Call autozone or your local parts store. THey should be able to test the parts for you and will do so free of charge.

Resistance tests can be misleading on these parts. They can be within resistance specs and still be inoperative under load. However, if the distributor pick up is open or shorted it is bad.

If the ignition parts test good you will need a factory manual from mitsubishi to perform troubleshooting of the circuitry.
Another option is an online subscription to
alldata.com
They offer a DIYer vesion that covers one vehicle. A less expensive option compared to the costly factory manual.

New User -
Thanks for info. so far.I have a chiltons manual and it covers every other year model including 1991 with inductive pick up dist.My 1991 mighty max has a hall effect dist. The chiltons covers the coil specs.,but does not even mention the hall dist. and ignition module. I live in a rural area,no autozone, and my parts houses say,no test equipment. Thanks again Jim

Douglas -
Ok,

A question, does the check engine light come on when the key is turned on (as it normally does)?

1991 Mitsubishi Mighty Max Engine Hesitating When starting Always

New User Asked -
when i first start it up it doesn't want to stay running unless i give it gas. i also have to let it warm up for ten to twenty minutes before it runs good. if i start it up and take off it wont go. doesnt have the power it use to. i already gave it a tune up (plugs, wires, distributor cap, rotor button, oil change, air filter). dont know what is wrong with it.

Douglas -
The tune up surely should of included a fuel filter.

The first thing you should do is check fuel pressure to see if it is withing specs.

If the check engine light is on you'll need to check diagnostic codes. Let me know if this is the case.

New User -
i did add a new fuel filter. i also changed the sock on the fuel pump. how do you check the diagnostic code and the fuel pressure.

New User -
that really didnt help me none. is there anything else you might think it could be. could it be the mass air flow sensor, the computer, or the coil. could any of that be why it wont stay running when i first start it up. it only does it when it sits up for a couple of hours. like if i drive it for awhile then turn it off and start it back up like an hour later it is fine.

Douglas -
Is there any smoke from the exhaust when it is running bad? Does the oil smell like gasoline at all?

New User -
yes my truck does smoke. and the oil smells like old gas. but i believe it smokes because when my brother changed the head he got one that had a burnt valve or two. but the head didnt have a crack or anything. my dads been working on cars for thirty years and he said the head was good. i dont know i dont live with him and he wont help me fix it. ive worked on cars for about eight years now but im not that good. so if you could figure it out i would be happy. i need my truck to go to work and home. thanks

Douglas -
What color is the smoke, is it black or blue?

New User -
it is like a light whitish gray. it only smokes when i first start it up and when i let it sit there and idle. when im going down the road it doesnt smoke at least i dont see it. thanks

Douglas -
Check your coolant, are you losing any coolant?

If you do have a burnt valve the engine will never run right.

1988 Mitsubishi Mighty Max Fuel System Chugging When accelerating When warm

New User Asked -
when trying to accelarate or go up a hill my truck I loose alot of power and just chugs along and blow a litle bit of black smoke out the tail pipe. It gets really bad the warmer it is outside. Any ideas?

Roger -
If you have a carbureator, the choke may not be operating properly. Does your engine warm up to the proper operating temperature? Does it missfire?

Also, the catalytic converter may be failing and causing a restriction in the exhaust. An engine that can't exhaust well, can't breathe/run well.

Roger

New User -
I replaced my catalytic converter and my oxygen sensor a year ago thinking that was the culprite. And yes my car does warm up to normal temp and no misfires

Roger -
OK, we're back to considering a choke that may me lazy to open all the way. Or...

Is your transmission automatic? Does it seem to allow the engine to lugg down before it downshifts? How many miles on the engine? Is the timing correct, have you tried a compression test to see if the combustion chambers and rings/valves are in spec?

The EGR valve port in the head might be clogged up with coking. The EGR valve itself could be failing...

Can you connect a vacuum guage to the carb or intake manifold and see how much vacuum (and how steady it is) at idle?

Some things to consider...your turn,

Roger

1987 Mitsubishi Mighty Max Fuel System

New User Asked -
pulled off highway at light and was running great, pulled out from light and lost power, 20mph and running ruff and then shutoff. Timing belt only has about 10,000 miles

New User -
did not change smaller belts by timing belts

Roger -
Hello, A good way to begin is to see if you have fuel pressure and spark.

Are you ahead of me....have you already done this?

Roger

New User -
no i haven't. Going now to begin trouble shooting. truck is not at my residence.

Roger -
If you have some starting fluid it may speed things up a bit. If a shot of starting fluid in the air intake to the carb results in the engine trying to start you will know spark is present and the engine needs fuel supply.

Could be a stopped up fuel filter or fuel pump failure.

Is your truck the 2.0L or 2.6L engine?

Roger

New User -
its a 2.0. Pulled timing cover off and an tension pulley came apart. ordered both belts and pulleys and now my concern is getting it back in time. the tension pulley was on timing belt.

Roger -
Do you need a diagram for the timing of the gears and the belt?

I'll need your email address to send the drawing to please.

Roger

New User -
yes please @ [redacted]

Roger -
Thank you for your patience with me. I have put together a nine page file.

Please check your email inbox, spam, and junk mail for Subject "Mighty Max"

Roger

New User -
Thank you for the diagrams and truck runs good. It does have a slight tapping now, should I be concerned? This is a great service and I feel I have gotten my monies worth.

Roger -
The 2.0L engine has hydraulic lifters with no adjustment possible. If you suspect valve lash is the source of the tapping the valve train should be inspected for excessive wear.
